Help is a long way away & last year's broken ribs could have been worse. "They" tell me my stairs need a railing and all my water needs to be brought in before it freezes. Let's get the chainsaw out and knock a few more things off the to-do list.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Because I’ve gotten so many questions about the gear that I use on the channel, here are some of the most important pieces I use every day:
(I do receive a small commission from sales associated with the following links. Any income from these sales goes directly to supporting me in making new videos for this channel!)
**I will not share links to products that I don't use regularly or that I wouldn't buy again.**

Granberg Small Log mill amzn.to/3cdRXvn
Granberg EZ Rail system amzn.to/3LbMxSl
Big, Black Log-Peeling Knife - Becker BK9 amzn.to/3oZIeOH
Heater I use in the shower amzn.to/3PUzhU6
My favorite piece of gear: chainsaw helmet amzn.to/3uuW5xB
I’ve tried a lot of work gloves and these are my year-round fav’s amzn.to/3TnH3pu

Thank you all so much for supporting this crazy endeavor! Without you folks donating to Surviving Ringworm, I wouldn't be able to even consider staying out here in the wilderness a THIRD year making videos. You seriously blow my mind!

drill a 1/4 inch hole on the side of your logs at a downward angle towards the bottom and once a year put a funnel in it and put used motor oil in it. old timers like my grandpa used this method a lot for fence posts, it works amazing at keeping your lumber rot free...

You may want to think about turning the front porch on your cabin into a full cabin width. This would give you plenty of room for staging your projects. You can then turn your staging deck into an enclosed porch when it's time to do so. I don't expect you to read this post as my name is not on your picnic table. . . Yet still I very much enjoy watching you develop your homestead.

😂 Ryan, I listened to you and grabbed an acre of land out in the woods, bought a 16 x 40 shed, finished it out like an old farm house, put in shelves, cupboards and trim. The best part was learning to use chain saws, lawn tractor, building a tote garden, design two porches and two driveways. I made two bookcases and two storage cabinets. Love useing the tools and makeing things. Really love your videos and watch every episode I can find. You are "The Genius of the Forest!" Keep up the excellent work!!! 😊 Sandie

Once that 100 lbs propane tank is empty, (since they won't refill anymore) turn that into a nice woodstove for the kitchen or screenroom?
@StevenVeldt

Reading your comment my mind went to an upright rocket stove with a grill up top and air intake down below. Load it up from the top and light it up. Probably not what you were thinking brother but everyone will have a unique interpretation.
@daviddarlingauthor

@@StevenVeldt that's a great idea for sure! The tank is too big for the traditional pot-bellied style, but a rocket stove and grill? Could be awesome! We know he likes to re-purpose things...

Propane... You can refill large empty tanks with small full tanks. Assemble a hose so you can connect the tanks together. Turn the small full tank upsidedown and higher than the one you want to fill. Open both valves and leave it there for awhile. The liquid propane will migrate to the bottom tank.

Another great video Ryan. I finally watched from the first video to the most current. I enjoy the construction videos the most. However, they were about five things relevant for me in this video # 166. I took a spill on my homebuilt back steps here in Canada as well, just knocked the wind out of me. So I have installed a handrail and put grip strips on. Will be doing that sanded paint though. I never realized you could refill the green propane canisters. All my life I’ve known that propane is righty Lucy. Recently at my girlfriends in California while removing a propane tank I torked it right. I couldn’t believe when she said it was lefty, Lucy, and it was. Thought I was losing my mind. Thanks for reconfirming . Good idea to have a drain on the side of the water trough. I go hiking in the woods regularly to replicate your kind of solitude. You’ve just inspired me take a stove top toaster with me. Thanks for all the clever ideas you entertain me with, and especially encouraging me to get some land and take a chainsaw into the woods. Now just to find a piece of property, it was as great of tree species as you have . ~Wendel

You can drill fill holes into those logs to poor used oil into then make yourself some round plugs to behind it you’ll have to freshen it up once a year or so but it will slowly soak in to preserve the wood. Old timers use to do that for fence posts to wolmanize them

The toast sounded good. I'm a fan of toast & will have to try the vanilla almond butter. I don't use soap for window washing because I find it streaks. I use hot water and vinegar with a window squeegy and it gets them sparkling clean with just one application. Your porch handrail is unusual. It would look nice if painted gray like the porch and steps.

Or add a mud room fore ur coveralls n boots and free up space in your cabin plus it will keep your cabin warmer or simply add a storm door/screen door usually common in colder climates so people dont ask you if you were "born in a barn" cuz you leave the door open all the time and let the heat out or bugs in.

on stairs in areas I'm worried about slipping, I put down a good thick first coat, then throw sand on it so it's spread evenly and let it dry, I come back and do another coat or 2 depending on how much traffic I expect and it works great for traction and lasts a long time.

Or here is an idea how bout adding a "Hippie Hot tub" just an IBC Tote cut off the top and there is a special wood stove used to heat and circulate the water and surround it with cedar boards. Got the idea from a couple in canada they got water issues to but they picked up an old Bull dozer some place cheap not a huge one as they do make smaller sized ones but this one uses a small gas engine to start the deisel motor common in the old days for some John Deere deisel tractors. Now they should be able dig a dug out with a bull dozer to collect water on their rocky property in canada. N solve their no water problem or having to drive long distances to fill up IBC totes. either find a small dozer or a small backhoe cheap as possible n start digging around your property or rent one n you know the spots the water drains to n try and make them larger trenches to collect your water you might get lucky.

Look at the vent valve on the top of your green tanks to visualize the size of the little. Valve. That one works the opposite in that you pull up on to vent the tank, the other one where the tank screws onto your applience pushes in. Getm your self a small set of curved jawed hemostats that will fit the vent valve. Fill your tank until you hear the flow stop. Pull up on the valve until you see a bit of vapor excape. Repeat enough to fill to capac.
