This cold process soap making tutorial deals with preparing lye and oils for cold process and getting everything ready to make your bar of cold process soap.

This cold process soap making tutorial is aimed at beginner soapmakers with the aim of making you feel confident in setting everything you need up so that you can be successful in making your cold process soap.
In this tutorial, I cover the methods for preparing the various types of oil, mixing your lye solutions, the types of containers and equipment to use and also handy tips to help you check that you're doing everything right as you go along so you don't end up with errors in your measurements or forgotten oils and similar things.
I try to give lots of hints and tips in all of my videos, so hopefully, you can use some of the techniques in this cold process soap making tutorial in your own soap making.

I recently got interested in making soap, and was not very successful in getting the results i wanted. I started learning with most advertised in USA - Bramble Berry and Soap Queen tutorials just to find out their tips and recipes (even though I was very precise about everything) did not work/help. I am happy that I discovered you here on RU-vid (better late than never :), and find that your videos are very helpful, and you sure do make the most beautiful soap!!! I don't understand why people are so shy to click the thumbs up, you well deserve it. Thank you so much! I do think a lot of people use SoapQueen and I'm sure she's great but a lot of her methods and techniques aren't really the best ways to do things. They are not bad and she typically does give good/safe advice, so I don't want to knock her at all, but there are often better ways

Hello! I like your videos. I find them very informative. I live in Puerto Rico. A tropical island in the Caribbean. The temperature here goes up to 100 ° F and a little more. Coconut oil is always liquid (at the store is hard like shortening because of the air conditioner). On the other hand, Palm oil is always, and I mean always, hard, never goes liquid. It might get a tiny bit softer but never liquid. Just as an informative comment. I don't mean to be disrispectful whatsoever. 😁

Hi Raquel. Thank you. The method you are talking about will only work for hot process, where the soap is made in a crock pot, the heat saponifies it and then, whilst it is still fluid you can add an oil of your choice after saponification. You cannot do that with cold process. If you add your lye and oils and then saponify, the soap will be solid and you will not be able to add anything else. If you add oil whilst cold process is still fluid it is not saponified at that point, in this case the oil you add last will be used by the lye just as the other oils are, you cannot specify which oil will be left as superfat in cold process. Love your videos! Always clear and easy to understand. I do have a question about premaking lye the night before. I have done this on occasion when I know I have a large batch to do the next day. Wondering if it is possible to warm up your lye mixture after it has cooled when I do not want to soap at room temperature. Or is it okay to use room temp lye in warm oils?

HI, yes it's fine to gently warm your lye, I always do this, just sit your jug of lye in some warm water, make sure it's nice and sturdy though and not floating around

Hi again, you don't need castor oil, it is typically only added up to 5% in a recipe, so especially for you 1st attempts it will be fine without it. :-)

Hi thank you so much. Yes we have some great places in the UK. For oils etc you can use the Soapery, or even your supermarket for things like olive oil. We have lots of good fragrance supplies, Scent Perfique, Gracefruit (lots of soap things), Sensory Perfection, Mysic Moments(for essential oils). I hope this helps a bit

Digital scales and everything else "expensive" can always be sourced 2nd hand...just double check that they're truly undamaged and still accurate. Never be afraid to check out a 2nd hand shop. But if you're going to use *anything* from one for soaping, a GOOD idea is to wash that anything well with vinegar, just in case, to nullify anything that MAY have soaked into whatever..plastic being one substance that IS notorious for absorbing a bit of whatever it last held.

I am so thankful to you and your videos. I made a soap yesterday following your other video on trace because my soap kept accelerating and i couldn't create my designs. It worked perfectly. So much so that i was growing inpatient with it as it was taking too long. But i had an issue. I made a very basic soap without any extra special oils or butters and no fragrances or colors since my husband requested it, and i didn't blend my lye and oils until they were around 93 degrees. I usually do it at 120 but after watching your video, i tried it out. While it didn't accelerate, the middle gelled too quickly after i poured it and it bubbled up and stuck to the lid. Now the top cracked. What could have happened? Thanks!

Hi Christina, I'm so pleased you have started to master trace and acceleration, it makes such a massive difference. It sounds like your basic soap overheated, this could be due to how much water you used, the more water = the hotter your soap will get, what water % did you use. Also did you insulate it in any way or put it in the oven (turned off) to CPOP at all? If your soap isn't too old you can generally get a bit of cling wrap, put it over the soap and gently push the crack back, apparently that works well (I've not done it myself) Best wishes. Lisa

Did you happen to put it in the oven with the heat on? Or, it sounds like you had some sort of sugar on it. I don't know your recipe, but always multiply your lye amount to 1.1 > 1.85 to determine your water amount. I have had great success with that. Additionally I want to add to this lady- water is an insulator. It will hold heat measured in time. The more water the LESS the heat BUT the heat will last longer in time. It takes time for colors to morph and time for gel. Never go below 1.1 as it can be crusty but lower water creates a higher heat but shorter lasting. I dunno but could result in cracking during use because of less binding water. It happened to me. I normally stay around 1.45 - 1.85 x lye to determine my water. Hope that helps.

@@iwannaapple7190 I figured it out. I messed up the recipe. When i used the soap calculator, I had no idea what kind of coconut oil I had and chose the fractionated. It was lye heavy. Those batches I made with that recipe were all lye heavy. Thanks though.

Hi Lisa, it is me again, Karen! Thanks for your help with me yesterday about how to measure a soap mold I was able to get that done! Shortly after I finished I remembered that I met a woman in a craft store before the COVID 19 outbreak and we were talking about what we do in the craft world. I told her I was just starting to soap and she said she had some Bison Fat and gave it to me for free! I was so happy because I had heard that soap made with Bison Tallow was really good and soft. I had to cook it down and it has been in my freezer a few weeks and now with your help I think I am ready to make my first batch however Bison Tallow is not on Soapcalc. Any ideas on how to calculate Bison Tallow or how to get it into Soapcalc?

Hi Karen, so pleased you sorted it out. I'm afraid Bison tallow is something I have never used. When you say you've cooked it I presume you mean you've rendered it down rather than just cooked it, as I do know it needs to be rendered, but as for sap value, I'm afraid I have no idea, so can't advise - sorry

Hi Lisa, yes I meant rendered it down. I used a crock pot. Thanks for letting me know what it is called because I sure didn't...lol If you ever hear anything about sap value for Bison (buffalo) Tallow please think of me. I will keep it in my freezer for a little while. Now sure how long it will stay good in the freezer but I would think I have a little time. In the meantime I am going to push forward with the other oils I do have and thank you very much for all you help. Thanks Lisa, I don't do so well on FB myself. I think it was made for the younger generation. I do get to check out my grandchildren on there and that is mostly what I use it for. I’d imagine you could treat it as beef fat. Bison/buffalo are bovines/cattle so that should work.

is it advisable to use one oil in making embeds or soap sprinkles and also no fragrance whiles you make embeds or soap sprinkles

I just use the same recipe and if I know what soap I'm using my embed in I do fragrance them if making a poured embed. If I'm using soap dough they will be unfragranced as my soap does is unfragranced

Thank you Lisa for all the help. I have a question - up to what temperature do u heat your hard oils and butter that they remain so clear .. ? Do u start working with oil when the oils are 130f and say lye is 120f ? Won't it thicken very fast due to the temperature?

HI Kasuda, I don't really know the temperature. I heat until the coconut goes clear and then add the butters and let the heat from the melted oil melt those too, if needed I heat those a little bit. I always soap with my lye and my oils between 80-90F

Lisa, we have a built in water dispenser in our fridge which uses a filter. Can this be used for soap making rather than distilled?

Hi Miarose. I do think a lot of people use filtered water very successfully. I have always used distilled, so have no experience of it, but I certainly know a lot of people who have no issue with it. You could always try with a small batch 1st, you would need to let it cure to see if it developed any DOS, so it would be a bit of a wait, but better than wasting lots of soap.

I always wondered why we need castor oil.. Some soapers religiously use it in their recipie while some don't.. I am gearing up to try cp soap for my family but a little unclear what would be a good recipie for UK climate and water hardness around London.. HI, thank you so much for your lovely comment, I'm so pleased you found the video useful. When your starting out it's best to try a simple recipe 1st so that you can get use to how the soap behaves etc. Castor oil is used to help with lather in soap, it doesn't create bubbles itself but helps to stabilise the bubbles created by coconut oil. This is a handy chart that simply explains the key benefits of most oils without going into too much detail. www.lovinsoap.com/oils-chart/ For hard water citric acid can be added, but I wouldn't start with that in your 1st soap as it affects the lye and you have to adjust for the affect, which is probably something you don't want to get into in the beginning. The Soap Kitchen (in the UK - yippee) does bundles kit which would be great for starting out, they do things like simple cold process recipe bundle etc. I hope this helps a bit. HI Vicki This is the mini mixer I use, it’s so much better than those battery ones as it has lots of power, I use it as much as I do my normal blender. Hi full water tends to be 38% of oi weight, anything over 33% can start to give you issues with glycerin rivers etc.

Thank you so much for all of your well explained videos. Your kitty is adorable and looks a lot like my Squeak. My question for you is about citric acid as a preservative. Have you ever used it? I've made a couple of batches with it. I only make small batches of soap so I'm working with very small amounts. Do you have a video that includes CA, as I have not seen one? I'm unsure how I can tell if I'm doing the math right. In 1000 grams of soap, 1% of CA. So 1% would be 10 grams of CA. For every 10 grams of CA I need to add 6 grams extra of lye. Is that correct or is there a better preservative? Thank you:)

HI, unfortunately I have never used citric acid, so can't advise I'm afraid. Because of our rules in the UK we cannot add things to our soap without paying to get each change cosmetically assessed and certified, so I tend to try to stick to the same recipe

I Dream In Soap yes, I've heard a little about the strict rules in the UK. I really lack confidence in soap making and I have had DOS in a couple of soaps. I make sure the expiration dates are at least a year away on my oils and refrigerate them. But still have had DOS a couple of times. So I was hoping to find a preservative. I've tried two batches with citric acid, but they're not cured yet to see if they are ok. I guess I will wait and see. It seemed like a small amount and I can't find any videos that explain the percentages. Thank you so much for all of your help and great tutorials. You are a true artist❤️

Some soaps are fine, I would stay away from anything with fragrance or colours in, a nice gentle castille soap would be great

I would like to add alcohol to my soap to make it anti bacterial but wich percentage is not irritable for the skin and how much ml you need to add?

Unfortunately alcohol and soap do not work well together, you will not get a good bar of soap from it

Please do not do this soap doesnt need to be anti bacterial as it already cleans dirt off the skin. Read up on it before you do something crazy

Useful ...I hav a doubt mam....after 30 days I used my soap it makes little itching is due to improper blending ....how to overcome this mam .....as I blend very well till the trace come ....nd mixed it well ....bt the result is itching mam....

Hi Vini, there could be a few things. First of all soap will get milder the longer you cure it for. I cure mine for a minimum of 6 weeks but often longer. Itching can also be a sign of a lye heavy soap, are you sure you accurately measured everything, have you done a zap test to make sure your soap is not lye heavy. Also you may be sensitive to one of your ingredients, some people react to coconut oil, especially if quite a bit is used in the soap, nut oils (e.g. almond oil) sometimes cause an allergic reaction too. @@vini3498 It's a very simple test (but a bit weird), you take a bar of soap and you actually stick your tongue on it. If it tastes like soap then you're fine, if you get a tingle then the soap is probably lye heavy. It's probably not something you want to do a lot because licking soap is weird, but It's a good simple test if you are worried.

Hey Jojo, the video is not about the quantities etc and is not intended to give a recipe, it is purely to show the best way to get various different types of oils, and butters etc ready to use in your soap and some hints and tips about how I go about dealing with some of the different types of oils you may encounter

Why can’t we live closer instead of having an ocean and a large country in between us? I do many of the things that you do: I have weighed all my containers (mixing and storage) and marked with a Sharpie, I even weighed empty scent and colorant containers. I group my hard and soft oils in my recipe, and in the order to be added. I grate my Cocoa Butter.. And I do check the weight of my oils/butters because I have gotten distracted and forgotten something. I don’t refrigerate my water, but I do freeze it...a gallon at a time...and store the cubes in the freezer. And I have two cats...Pino and Sophie.

IF you DO use aluminum, be prepared: your lye water *will* react enough to pull some metal(at least colour) off and you'll have an interesting water/aluminum mixture,which, besides being a strange colour will have some of that metal in it, tainting your lye mixture. So now you have an unknown mixture of chemicals that you're trying to make soap with... so, much easier, just don't. It's just not worth it.

Plastic? Do NOT LET THE LYE CRYSTALS SIT ON THE BOTTOM AT ALL! THEY WILL LITTERALLY SCAR THE BOTTOM BY MELTING INTO IT...SO BEGIN STIRRING BEFORE YOU START TO POUR, AND DON'T STOP UNTIL THE WATER IS CLEARING!

They shouldn't react that quickly and if you are using the correct plastic it will not be affected by the lye, but yes you do want to get it stirred so that you don't get big solid chunks of lye
