As a former-fuzz, I still train with side handle, and straight handle batons. I keep fast and limber by training strong and weak handed. Batons are great for so many cituations, because many objects are symilar to a baton, like a stick, pool cue, chair leg, ect. Not so much the side handle. Note: A head strike is called "lethal force". Same level of force as a gun.

Great video thanks for sharing and upto date. I have been karate training for a few years and as a minor prepper home security is relevant. So for self defence I'm adding kobudo into my personal training.

I have been using tonfa and the bo for decades. When I was young I studied Kobudo. I trained my new wife with the tonfa. We are learning cane defense now.

@@pasquinilli I am living in Wichita and recovering from cancer treatments. Later this year my wife and I want to start formal training with a cane instructor. Right now we are doing the Samarai cane training videos with Smart Samarai canes from cane masters.

Thank you. Was fun to watch. Want to add: as you do a swinging strike, make sure the baton/tonfa is straight in line with your arm so you maximize power. You also want to swing through the target. A lot of people miss the alignment and it turns more into a slap.

Hi Matt, glad you are having this class. When i started on the PD we carried the 24 inch straight baton, then switched to the PR 24. i preferred the baton, because at that time the PR 24 only came in a 24 inch length. Being i am 5' 7" , i always had issues of tagging myself when performing the swinging strikes. I continued carrying it, but always had the baton at home, where i could practice with it. Both of these tools have their strengths and weaknesses and i believe it is best to carry, if legal, the one that a person can use to their best advantage. God bless. Doug.

@@pasquinilli Hi Matt. Perhaps some of the basic techniques i learned in the Academy? Basic 2 handed thrust with the end also with the front leg stomp and drag the rear leg for more power. Thrust with the center shaft to the upper chest, and face if warranted. Pull push and twist holding each end for retention. Full downward strikes and snap strikes to the arms, hands, shoulders and top of the head(when deadly force is the only alternative) Sternum drags. Maybe these might be something you might want to demonstrate. Take care and see you in class. Doug.

Good afternoon Sensei ; I caught your first tonfa video late last year . I purchased a pair of Tonfas from My Studio: Okinawan style Tonfas . I really like these ; Like I said , they are such a great blocking weapon and I get a great workout for my arms/ forearms .! Sensei , you mentioned a certain grain of sandpaper for softening the handles , what was it ? Thanks for a great video lesson and I am looking forward to more .!!

I am truly enjoying your videos. Tonfa is my favorite martial arts weapon. I read a comment about repairing tonfas. I am having a hard time finding vendors, let alone someone who can fix mine. The handle on one of mine is loose. I've had them for a long time and hate to replace them if I can help it.

HI Sensei Matt though I would mention my Sensei asked me to please donate time as an asssistant instructor I would guess it's the same or similar weapon as if you look at the French Pr 24 in my below video they still refer to that as the tonfa? But I think the true answer is if the traditional was pairs is something like the shoulder lock possible with the modern version as only one is used thoughts? Please thank you

It should come already finished either oiled or varnished. If not, then definitely start to oil it up

My question is isn't it generally frowned upon to use this a club? I mean I thought the primary use is to strengthen deflection of punches as a type of shield I mean I have viewed videos done by police officers so none of them are suggest ting it be used as a club thoughts please thank you ??

HI Sensei Matt my question to you is if I decide to take tae kwon do will I still be able to take advantage of the tonfa as a defenseive weapon I have a black belt or maybe its true that the better answer is its more important to understand the basic defensive moves are enhanced with the tonfa/PR-24 ? so I is one answer the style is not important its knowing how to apply it correctly in a defensive situation rather than the style that would make it effective in a situaiton?

Taekwondo will have no knowledge of the Tonta but if you learn a more traditional taekwondo then the blocks and strikes will be easily applied to the Towne Plaza because traditional tae kwon do is basically stylized karate with more kicks. If you learn a very modern taekwondo which is like fancy foot fighting and very sports oriented and almost no punches or blocks other than those used in competition, then there will be noApplication for the Tonsler. Modern taekwondo has really moved away from any kind of practical application for self-defense which is a shame and they did it all for money. So if you want to learn self-defense, then study self-defense here and I will give you the basics that you need, and go and do the taekwondo for fun and for good exercise for sport near you. Both are good. Thank you!

well I will say I think I am currently taking a karate class it seems to incoperate a lot of ninjutsu concepts its possible to see how some move that are block types or maybe similar chops could be applied with the baton I guess the best answer is you will alway do better in a situation if you decide to learn as much as possible do you agree? ( I mean one thing my instructor said not to get into situations is if someone know more than you you will have a problem ) so I guess than really the best answer is it make sense to learn as much as possible do you agree?

Yeah my Martial arts instructor said he took a fire arms class but he does not like to focus to much on the fire arms concept (any way one belief is use of such a thing would be an advanced concept anyway ( I would think and I would think is not a basic self defense skill )

my current question is could you not use the side handle in a hook punch? I mean I herd the jaw is an anatomical soft spot I would think that if you were to jab it int to someone jaw it would probably be an effective defensive tactic? I meant in case I was unclear something like a fist load or roll of quarters enhance punch to the jaw ? thoughts please thank you !

I doubt it. Hawaii is super liberal and likely doesn’t allow pr24 unless you are law enforcement. I’ll check for you though.

Go to Baton Warehouse, they most likely ship to Hawaii. You can order black powder weapon right to your front door in Hawaii so I don't see why you could not order a PR 24.
