For those of you who have been around for a while, you've probably learned that I am studying neuroscience in school. I’m currently a junior and am preparing to apply to medical school which means lots (and I mean LOTS) of hours participating in the medical field. As part of my prep work, I got the opportunity to work in the ER close to my home in Dallas! It has been such an amazing experience so far soaking everything up that I can possibly learn from everyone who works in this field on a daily basis. Part of that experience includes doing everything as a doctor would and that calls for night shifts. I work in a clinic up by my college, but since we only operate during normal work hours this is my first night shift either!! Good for Kamri for pursuing a career outside of RU-vid and enjoy your youth for working night shifts. My mom did it for a long time as a heart nurse by late 20s you’ll be exhausted.

Our night shifts are from 6:45 pm - 6:45 am. Most of them are workful and in a rush - so great that you won‘t get really tired. I try to sleep 2/4 am - 11am/1 pm on the day before. After the night shift I sleep from 10 am - 1 pm most of the times. The following nights are not really good- but after about 2-3 following days I‘m right back on track with my sleep cycle.

I remember my first 24 hrs shift, I was so nervous but so excited, I learned so many things but i ended being super tired because I could not sleep at all since there were 3 surgeries and one of them was over 3 hrs long, definitely exhausting but worth it. You are going to do great, its going to be tough but you are going to learn so much :)

My dad is a retired ER doctor and my mom was an ER nurse and then became an ortho PA-C! You will always be needed in the ER!

Don’t ruin it! It can sometimes get chaotic, even if you work away from the emergency room (I work in the hospital lab).

the best way to get patient care experience during undergrad is to work as a CNA/ patient care tech!! Some hospitals require the CNA certification but many don’t. I did this during nursing school and it gave me the best exposure and so much knowledge that when I started as an RN I had so much less to learn compared to those who ONLY did Clinicals and shadowing. Actually having your own patient load reaches autonomy and time management and I can’t recommend enough

@@zairabandy8695 sleeping during the day as opposed to night isn’t necessarily the problem, there are always black out curtains😂, more the fact that you’re switching back and forth from doing night shifts a few times a week then switching to being awake during the day and sleeping at night. but i mean, someone’s gotta do it i guess lmaoo

I did night shift for 6 months at a level 1 trauma center as a new grad in 2020. Respiratory therapist. All I'm going to say is GOOD LUCK (and I pray for you)

Working in the ED is the BEST experience to get before med/PA school. I'm a PA-S right now and I have to say that working as an ED Tech taught me so much about the hands on part of medicine!

I am a 4th yr med student and my night shifts are scheduled as 7pm-7am (but realistically they are 6:30pm-7:30am.) They are hard but rewarding! You got this Kamri and good luck!

Similar hours at my hospital (7 PM to 7:30 AM [+1]). But you have to get information from the day teams, and then feed information to them.

As someone who works the night shift (which is 12 AM to 8 AM) at a hospital with a break just under 2-hours mid-shift, melatonin and sleep are a must. And there is no such thing as a slow shift at a hospital, even though I work in the hospital lab (with 3 people in the lab).

I’m starting to do work in a hospital too! I’m wanting to become an allied health assistant in the future.. so helping out with physiotherapist and occupational therapists :) good luck with it all!
