i'm not gonna lie, we spent like $2000 on a mattress. it was 100000% worth it. dont ever skimp on a mattress. buy as good of quality as you can afford.

Remember to ask yourself “Does this spark joy?”

A trick with couch covers. Take the fabric material you would like to cover your couch with and put it pretty side down (the side you eventually want to be visible) and use safety pins and straight pins to shape it *exactly* like your couch. This includes wrapping around if it has foot rests that come up. Try to avoid cutting it if at all possible. Then take the material off, careful to not dislodge any safety pins (you can draw lines with tailor's chalk and a ruler if you like just to make sure you know exactly where to sew). Sew the places where you have pinned and if you can avoid it, avoid cutting the material just yet. Once everything is sewn, turn it inside out and the pretty side should be facing out and try to put the thing over your couch. Because you haven't cut the material, if an area needs to be adjusted, you can remove the stitching and adjust as much as you need until you have it to your liking. I don't know if you can buy huge bolts of upholstery fabric in Japan as readily as you can in the US, but some of my happiest memories are of going to the fabric store with my Abuela (or just hanging out in her shop, she was a tailor) and feeling all the different bolts of fabric, opening them up and just appreciating them (and in the case of her shop, laying on them, rolling on them, making forts out of them, getting scolded, etc). Just a protip, if you are going to use washable material, wash it BEFORE you sew it because it will shrink and stretch in weird ways and ruin your hard work otherwise. Another tip: if you need to gauge how much material to purchase, try using sheets to cover the couch, and measure those to determine how large a piece of fabric you'll need.

The dust issues are probably because your air purifiers have an ion emitting device. These help reduce dust in the air because they cause the dust to clump together which makes it heavier so it falls out of the air and settles on surfaces. I have an air purifier with one and they have pros and cons especially for people like me with a dust allergy and allergic asthma. The main pro is that there’s less dust in the air to breathe in and cause allergy problems. The cons are that the dust settles on surfaces and that can make thing, especially things like blinds or curtains, harder to clean. The other con for people like me is that these devices emit small amounts of ozone, which for a normal person isn’t necessarily bad, but for people with asthma, ozone can be irritating to your lungs. My air purifier lets me turn the ion emitter on and off with a button so you might want to see if you can do that too and if turning the ion emitter off helps with the dust settling on surfaces. Either way, your air purifier should still remove the advertised level of particulates from the air.

gah so sorry you had to deal with him- when you get bad vibes from someone it's really creepy. Moving is so crazy stressful- I can't believe how much it's costing you!! That's so stressful! Rachel! I totally understand the end of your video. The last couple of years for me have been depressing (I also suffer from depression) and now things are going up. I am moving to Korea in May and I am so excited for that that I feel that it is helping get me out of the slump. You sounded exactly like me when I am trying to explain how I feel because yes I am stressed but I am hopeful and this feels good.

I have a good tip for you! Weather seal tape AKA foam tape to seal your cupboards! If you have the glass pane cupboards with the wood frame that let you see your pretties you can seal them with High-Density Rubber Foam Weatherstrip Tape that would be about 4$ in the USA and it will save you so much time on dusting because oddly even with glass doors dust will get in. The weather seal really lowers the amount of dust. I learned this from my grandmothers who both had huge glass dish collections that had to be washed for major holidays. We got the cupboards sealed and wallah! no more dusting mid season.

I have no idea why but just watching your normal lives is so entertaining and peaceful, it's like you guys create a friend relationship through your videos and ur videos then become just like a life update from a friend!

After you move, get a minimal amount of stuff unpacked, I hope you take some time off. Don't vlog it, don't tell us about it on social media, just do something nice and relaxing for yourselves. An onsen, a day at a park, heck, even just laying on the floor looking up at the ceiling (YOUR floor and YOUR ceiling now, I might add). Relax, do nothing. Moving is stressful af. You EARNED some doing nothing!

The couch looks like microfiber/microsuede material which is actually perfect for when you have cats. I have 7 cats with a microfiber set and the material is so tightly woven they can't get the satisfaction of sinking their claws into it. I can't wait to see the new place!

1st of all i'm LIVING for the dust rant 😭 ur energy changed like a sick beat when u got to the part about ur new closed shelves 😂 i feel u & it's all about those little things that greatly improve life! speaking of which, i don't suggest the roomba but GIRL i just won the xiaomi xiaowa from roborock & my life is changed! it's pet friendly, even includes a tool to cut hair out of it AND mops too! kitty litter floor is FINALLY no more! & i empty it weekly not daily. 97/10 recommend, already obsessed 😂 u can 100% have a robot vacuum. samsung just dropped new ones too; shop around. in the meantime if i win the lottery as well, i'll send ya one 😄 as for the cold, a positive outlook truly does change everything! sounds like we've been going through the exact same sh!t, i'm finally feeling positive again too.. & hopeful it'll continue that way for both of us 😁 next time u gotta start packing way earlier 😂 it REALLY helps to spring clean too, annually at the least! konmari 4 lyfe. but it's all gonna be gravy, girl. soon you'll be sitting on ur dustless throne stroking a kitty with one hand making big bank deposits with the other 🤣 so happy for u guys. u said a lot, i said a lot 😂 sending smooth successful move vibes. with love, strength & canadian cat kisses from my baby "coco chanel"!

I think the dust thing is dependent on the humidity. In like southwest US, the dust flies like you describe in the sun, but in more humid areas like the northwest or in the northeast areas, I haven't really noticed that. Just my experience lol. Could be totally mislead.

Holy sh*t! Moving just sucks and hearing how much it's costing you two to move on top of everything else that sucks about moving, well I'm frazzled. It will be worth it, but wow! Sending you super-human strength from the USA.

GET A ROBOT VACUUM CLEANER!!! Seriously though, I bought one last year, and its removed SO MUCH HAIR AND DUST. I have a xiaomi roborock 2, which is like a top version roomba for roughly half the price. I think the most important feature is that it isnt Random and creates a map to follow.

I thought I was the ONLY person who was trained by my own cat. Literally anytime my cat King wants food, he finds me sleeping or relaxing somewhere and he will start scratching at my water bottle OR he will scratch at the windows and he knows it DRIVES me up a wall so I go and feed him to stop him LOL

Rachel, I'm so happy that you are in a better place mentally. I suffer from seasonal depression, too. But like you, this winter I didn't feel so down and overwelmed at all! Me and my boyfriend are also moving soon and sorting out lots of stuff. It is a super nice feeling to start fresh with less clutter in your apparment/mind. I started watching your videos because of my interest in Asian culture and everything, but now I'm watching because I can relate to you on many levels and your videos give me peace. I hope your move goes smoothly. I too used to suffer from winter depression especially until I started taking 2,000IU of Vit. D and Magnesium and went on a life changing diet of no grains, no dairy, and very low sugar. What a difference it makes to get away from carbs and sugars! They are not our friends. Rachel have you tried buying a full-spectrum light box for your seasonal affective disorder? My friends who have it say it helps them a lot, and they live in New England, where it's especially cold and gray in the winter. Maybe after you're settled in you can research it online. There are different brands and quality levels, but I hear they help and it's a way to help yourself without having to take meds. I hope you both feel better soon, and good luck on your move!

Always trust your gut instinct about people. It is not judgmental (unless you always have a “bad” feeling about types of people-short, fat, blond, etc.). We absolutely see or hear things that are unconscious that warn us of different kinds of dangers. Someday your gut instinct may save you some serious hurt. Read the book “The Gift of Fear” by Gavin de Becker.

I would recommend a Roomba. We have a lot of cats and a dog. It's never gotten clogged, just the dirt compartment is small and needs to be emptied often. But you can set it to run on it's own at a certain time every day, and the newer one has the station where it empties the dirt on it's own. With vacuuming and sweeping, there always seems to be fur that settles back down after getting blown into the air. But the roomba doesn't really blow it around so the floor seems cleaner to me with it. You'd still have to use a vacuum with a hose to get all the spaces it can't get to but I wouldn't consider that an everyday thing. This is just my experience with one. Idk if that helps and I'm sure other people have had bad experiences too, but I like ours.

I suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder on top of my major depression as well! I've found Happy Lights (or any light therapy box) do wonders in the winter! I'm using mine right now. I find it keeps me more stable and level-headed. Plus, that bright light really wakes me up! I highly recommend!

We have a roomba "Rosie" and 2 cats. We love it!!! Does not replace full vacuuming, but we do less full vacuuming. Emptying the drawer is super simple and you just do it after it docks or it will tell you when it is full. Everyone I know who has one, loves it! We do find it "stuck" in a couple of weird corners sometimes, but not often. Your dust may be mostly from the cats.. they have a lot of dander, plus hair... plus we humans create "dust". Happy Moving!! We will be doing it soon and a BIG move (selling house.. getting rid of 90% of stuff in our 3 bed house!).

Moving in Japan seems so much more complicated than moving in the states! My husband is former military so we moved quite a bit and compared to what y'all are having to do our moves seem a bit easier than they did at the time. Good luck with the move!!! My cats are jerks with our couch too. It's so bad that I put a tarp on the couch when I'm not around. I found a brown tarp online that is the same color as my couch. They hate the sound and feeling of the tarp so they stay away from it. It's just so bad that it's the only thing I've found that works to help save it. It actually works pretty well. When people come over or I want to sit on it I just fold it up and shove it under the couch. It's kind of a little bit of a hassle but it's a $2k couch. I really want to protect it and I would never get rid of my babies. I hope the move has/is going well!!!

Good luck moving! It’s always stressful. My Step-Mom uses a neato botvac on her floors. She has a golden lab, which sheds constantly. She loves it and hasn’t had a problem. It stops when it needs a emptying, but she doesn’t have to drag out the vacuum all the time, and their main floor is pretty big. Can’t wait to see you in your new place!

Rachel, I've been through 3 different "roombas" (other brands) specifically for cleaning up cat hair on our hardwood floors and I've learned that you need to get one with a rubber roller because it swipes up the hair waaaay better than the bristle ones. It's been great. I haven't heard of cat hair really getting clogged in the roomba, but I know MY hair certainly does. We have 2 cats and we only have to clean out the dust trap thing every other day. It's great to not have cat hair sitting under our couches anymore!

I never noticed the dust problem until I moved into an apartment with baseboard heating- not having central air to keep the dust in the air really made a difference on how dusty my surfaces got. Also I find places without carpet feel dustier because dust can cling to the carpet. As someone who is allergic to dust and collects things on shelves, I empathize with the hatred of constant dust.

The plush couch thing is American I think. German couches are hard too. My German husband needed a hard couch, apparently they’re better for your back.

I know its stressful now, but good job staying so positive! I'm so excited for you all and to see you feeling so hopeful. Congrats, love you guys!

It's an added expense, but they have a tower that charges and empties your Roomba's container and since it holds multiple containers worth, you empty it less often.

Cats and boxes...We're packing too and our cat has claimed all the boxes.

I’m glad he was honest about the roomba. Ours doesn’t suck up the cat hair on hard wood floors because the fan is on the side and it just blows the cat hair tumble weeds around. It works fine on carpet, though.

I totally understand your feelings with those dusty shelves issue 😂 although open shelves are aesthetically pleasing, but in the end the closed ones are far more practical and gives me an ease of mind

A good mattress is such an important investment, considering how much time of your life you spend in bed and how essential a good nights sleep is. And also, when you move into a new place it’s the best feeling if have some new things to start a new chapter. Btw, if you can’t get a Rumba, I’d suggest one of the Dyson vacuums that just have a long pole and run on a rechargeable battery. No cables and very space-saving. You’re so much more likely to take out the vacuum when it’s just hanging there on the wall. We have three cats, too, and that Dyson is fabulous. Granted, it’s not cheap but neither is a Rumba and we’ve had ours for many years now and it’s still perfect.
