Today, Annie will take you on a tour of our 100-year-old farmhouse root cellar, and show you all the things we've been adding to our food stockpile. We've always had this room to store things in, but we just recently remodeled it and built some sturdy shelves for tons of room for all of our prepping products and garden produce. Kitchen organization, food pantry layout, shelving, storage ideas,

Sidenote. If you go to your discount store preferably a Dollar tree - go to the baby shower/party packaging section. In that aisle you'll find packs of mesh draw string see through pouches that you can put the bay leaves in.

Over time there is a chemical reaction from plastic to concrete. I would suggest putting wood down on the floor and lacing those plastic jugs on top of it. You root cellar is beautiful

@@anniemcelroy2812, Hello again. Not to sound like a parrot or nagging know-it-all.. just good ole advice. A thin sheet of plywood would give some separation. Or 2x4's under the rows to keep the buckets up off the ground. The chemicals from the concrete or the ground below it are what can leach into the plastic, hence into the food. I need to research more into how long before any leaching occurs. No matter what that root cellar is fantastic!

When we had a bedroom in our basement, we had 2 x 4s directly on the floor about 3 feet apart. We put 1 x 6s on top to make a floor. We had a cheap piece of indoor/outdoor carpet over the wood.

Nuts go rancid even if not opened. I store my nuts in glass jars and vacuum seal them. If I had enough room I would keep ‘em in the freezer. The oil in them goes rancid. Maybe u guys go thru them faster then us. It’s just my hubby n I. Thx for sharing. U have my dream root cellar.

Would you be willing to do a video on how you cultivated your children’s work ethic/creativity? I just love how involved all your kiddos are with everything you do. They seem like such happy and active members of your household. I’m trying to teach my kids these things but they are young and it’s more of you have to help right now. But I want them to want to help and work and to enjoy it! I love working and creating. I have 3 kids under 8 year old and one on the way! I would love to hear your wisdom!

What a blessing in having this space. Loved seeing your root cellar. New subscriber here. One thing I noticed, if you put items on concrete floors, even if they are in five gallon buckets, you need to put them on wood pallet type things so air can circulate underneath them as they will absorb toxins from the concrete. Just what I heard from a master food storage person

Run your dehumidifier year round. Excess moisture will cause your lids to rust and you don't want mold like Art and Bri have. They had to gut their whole house. Sending lots of love 💖 from sunny 🌞 Arizona 🌵😷
@lucieengen7046
@lucieengen7046 2 года назад
We have a dehumidifier that you can set the percentage of humidy. It usually runs all winter here, rains a lot in winter, dry in summer.
@suzisaintjames
@suzisaintjames 2 года назад
@@lucieengen7046, even more reason to set to and leave it all year. If there's an unusual summer storm, if it's on, it will go to work. If you turn it off and there's a storm, you might not remember to turn it on. This is especially important because you don't vacuum seal your herbs etc. Moisture can still get into those jars. Oxygen removers don't do anything for moisture and your jars aren't sealed as long as that button can go up and down. 💖🌞🌵😷

It's going to be a total joy to walk into everything. I love it. Notes to think about. Get one of those things that measure humidity. This way you will know if you should put the dehumidifier on a timer or just use it certain times of the year. In a number of videos I've watched, they said not to have buckets directly on cement. Something about chemical leaching through plastic. You may want to put something down under the buckets. Looks like you have plenty of room to do it. It's just so nice. Very nice job. If it were mine, I'd have a chair there so I could either just look at everything or (lol) bring a book to hide from family once in a while.

@@anniemcelroy2812, Hello! Correct about the concrete. So I've read, anyway. The previous comment about cleaning supplies. Bleach does vent out. After 6 months it is no longer effective. My deduction in that is that it vents over the 6 month time frame. For bleach I now buy bleach tablets.

So brown bread is delicious! We ate brown bread with our pork and beans! From Upstate NY so probably yes it's an East Coast thing. Funny story we went to San Francisco and were in a Chinese restaurant and my little brother asked for the crunchy noodles we always had on the table where we were from. The Owner told him, "we don't do that - that's an East Coast thing".

Consider vacuum sealing your jars of herbs (depending on your usage). A lot of homesteaders are using brake bleeding hand pumps instead of fancy electric vacuum pumps. It would make your elderberry syrup last longer in the refrigerator as well.

The root cellar looks amazing! What a wonderful blessing to have the space complete and being efficiently used. I can feel your excitement. You asked about using the dehumidifier…I know nothing, I am learning myself as we try to figure out how and where we will store our preserved goods. My understanding is that root cellars were primarily for storing whole foods like the potatoes, onions, squash etc which requires a certain amount of moisture in the air although not a ton. With the bulk of your storage in the space being preserved goods it would seem that your choice to remove some of the humidity is a good thing. Plus with dried herbs I imagine the air needs to be fairly dry to keep them from potentially getting moldy. I’m looking forward to seeing what other folks think about this so I can also learn. Great video, thank you for sharing.

I was born and still live in Maine! Brown bread is a very old fashioned B&M company tradition. It’s very common on Saturday night to have hotdogs, B&M beans and B&M brown bread. Maine people use the brown bread to soak up the left over bean juice on there plate. Some will heat it up and put butter on it. But I do think it’s a New England tradition. I would not be surprised if it’s only a Maine thing. Thanks for sharing your root cellar, it looks amazing. ❤️
