Host, Ward Miller, Executive Director of Preservation Chicago guides you on a tour of one of Lincoln Park's most important historic districts. Learn how the district developed following the 1871 Great Chicago Fire: from modest frame homes to enormous mansions built by noted architects for prominent Chicago families. Ward meets restoration expert, Susan Hurst with Bloom Properties for an exclusive tour of the newly restored Sarah Belle Wilson House, 522 W. Deming Place. Features special guests, historian and Preservation Chicago board member, Diane Rodriguez; and Ed Vera, Formlinea Design+Build and Vera Rice Architects.

With heart felt appreciation I thank this Preservation Team for their energies that are toward care and sustaining the value of our American and Chicago History, a subject very dear to my heart, Chicago being my Home Birth Place and it has a lifelong energy that is part of me, my foundation. I particularly enjoyed the "Sara Bell Wilson House" History and Tour, and would love to have even more, plus *"a knowledge of the many Chicago Homes built with a partial Basement/Window offering natural light, as it is so prominent in the structures designs".* We lived at the Lincoln Park area and had a home similar and with a partial Basement, a grand staircase, wide and tall, that led up to the porch and entrance. I recall playing under the stair and around the entry area of our house. But, I am unaware of the design purposes and details. I see beautiful and positive energies, exceptional Harmony of Peoples, the Chicago Residents enjoying neighbors and community bursting anew and abundant in an expansion of Wellbeing, and Enjoying their Life Journey with delicious feelings of Creative, Sharing, and Happiness. Love this City always. GO CUBS - GO !!!!!!!!!

Thank you for this video, was very interesting. Did Charles Tyson Yerkes live in this neighborhood?

I don't know. Honestly, I'd never heard of Yerkes until you mentioned his name. Let me ask one of our historians. Perhaps they'll know. Glad you enjoyed the video.

I asked historian, Diane Gonzalez what she knew of Yerkes. She says: "Yerkes, the street railroad guy was such a hated public figure. He was crooked and manipulative. But he did give us via U of C the observatory in Williams Bay, WI. His Chicago home was at 3201 Michigan Ave from at least 1884 until he left in about 1895. I don't know details of his home, but it was a mansion in the neighborhood with other wealthy Chicagoans; it included two Rodin figures. Now his mansion in NYC has been well-documented as you probably know. Would like to think he was on Deming or in Lakeview, but I've never heard or seen evidence of that. He came to Chicago in 1881 so maybe he was a north sider when he first arrived. Probably he attended north side parties if he was ever invited!" Are you researching Yerkes? Maybe he's a relative? Hope this helps.

@@sarahbellewilsonhouse6167 thank you so much for your reply! I’ve recently read Theodor Dreiser’s trilogy based on C.T. Yerkes and became fascinated with it :)

So basically a bunch on nimby's 😂 Anyways, I love Chicago from STL, and will move there after college. I dont like how whole areas are protected which can inflate housing cost instead of saving some houses.

What I don't like about this is that you don't show me the inside that's what's most important the inside
