Oh that's too bad! Yes unfortunately preservative free salines aren't sold in drugstores... you might find Purilens at Bed Bath & Beyond. - The other local possibility is Addipak or similar unbuffered saline, but you probably have to have a prescription for it.

Thanks for sharing! You know what's really interesting to me about salines is how widely different the responses are. For example, for me personally, it's the opposite... I can do unbuffered for a few days before I really start noticing a difference (comfort and redness) and go back to buffered. Then there's all the people mixing saline (either type) with artificial tears (which incidentally all contain buffers as well). We're long overdue for some real science studying the features of these salines that matter for purposes of scleral lens use.

I agree, more studies need to be done as well as well as more products available. My current practitioner just tells me to use B & L sensitive eyes saline as they have recommended it for years. It has a very weak formula of preservatives. I don't, as I don't feel comfortable using any preservatives on a compromised cornea long term. I may try a drop of the B & L with the unbuffered but other than some slight initial discomfort with the unbuffered (30 min) I really can't tell the difference between buffered and unbuffered in terms of comfort over short and long term (hours and days).

@@BryanByTheSea I just had a peek at the ingredients in B&L Sensitive Eyes... it has the same borate buffers that Purilens and ScleralFil has. Who knew salines were so complicated :)

Yes, and a lot depends on the formulations, but I bet they are all very similar, I never tried it more than a day or so, so can't speak to as to how safe it is long term considering it has preservatives added. But the percentages of preservatives are on magnitudes less than other solutions, so perhaps it can be used, at least on a temporary basis. Certainly would be a cheap option.

Use for filling sclerals is "off-label". It's a preservative-free saline, and buffered to match the pH of the eye, which is what makes it popular for use with sclerals. You definitely want to ask your eye doctor what's OK to use in your sclerals. It's not a cleaning solution, i.e. it does not contain cleaning agents. The labeling is for cleaning because they sell it for use with the cleaning unit.

Unfortunately no, this is not a safe practice. They really need to be discarded same day. This is a common problem for scleral lens users - a vial is either too much or not enough. We are hoping that eventually, one of the manufacturers will find a way to package preservative free saline in special multi-dose bottles to keep it safe without breaking the bank.

Hi there - not quite sure which Boston solution you're referring to. The only one we would consider comparable to Tangible is Boston Simplus. I think it really comes down to personal experience, all of these have many fans! The three that are compatible with Hydrapeg coating are Unique pH, Tangible Clean and Boston Simplus. I'm a Unique fan, personally :)

Hi there! If you're asking about scleral lenses specifically (or other rigid gas permeable types) most people keep them in a multi-purpose contact lens solution in order to keep them disinfected. If you have long gaps where you're not wearing them (weeks/months) then ask your eye doctor's office if it is OK to store them dry. They would need to be disinfected before using them again though. I hope this helps!

She answered in the video. All of them are single use only except Purilens (since it has a closable bottle). So the single use ones shouldn't be used more than once, or else you run the risk of contamination and getting more acidic (moreso in unbuffered solution).

@@TheDryEyeShop Yes I’m due for a check up. Clearance looks good with no fluorescein getting in. Did lipyflow treatment last month and going to try adding Hydrapeg to the new lense
