Preserving wood is awesome. I make a lot of furniture from stumps and salvaged tree limbs. Just a word of caution, you should try to remove as much moisture as you can before adding a poly. Typically, I leave the stump indoors or in my makeshift kiln for a month or two, elevated from the ground and with a fan on it. I use spar poly because it’s flexible and UV resistant. I typically put first three coats on about 30 minutes apart. I leave that for a week then I add 3-6 more. I pour the poly over it. That spray has a propellant that thins the poly. It’s good for touch up but not a good seal. You did great on the prep, but another helpful hint is to buy a handheld planer, or rasp. That’ll help you level way faster. Gradually sand with low level sandpaper then go higher. Trust me it’s a huge difference to have smaller Pores. Kudos for taking the time to film. I curse too much to make them
Mineral oil and bees wax if you wanna be natural. As long as you’ve dried/cured the wood, any spar polyurethane is good to go. You’ll wanna use spar because it’s more sun and UV resistant as well as flexible so you won’t end up with cracks if the wood expands or contracts. I always put three or more layers. Make sure to let them dry for 24-48 hours between layers.
I doubt you’ll reply because it’s been over a year since this video has been posted. But I have a 15” tall trunk. I pulled all the bark off. I’m using as a side table. I’ve wanted one for years but seeing them for as much as $1000 prevented me from buying. What do I do to preserve it so it doesn’t rot? Do I just spray lacquer and that’s it? Please help. 😢
This is a great video! It's not boring at all! Thanks for posting! Can this same method be used for a oak coat rack I just fresh cut from my yard?. Just spray with a clear poly satin no? Would the bark crack as it dries out though? I love the look with the bark hope to preserve. Thanks!
Hi. I like your work. I've got a similar stuff from an oak tree and I'd also like to preserve it. May I know what are the products you put on it? Thanks in advance.
Thanks for the tips. If I were going to paint on the bark would I used water color and poly afterward? I'd probably sand on top and poly that as well when done . Any wood cleaners used to prep? Thanks!😏
Question for anyone, me and my partner had a tree we went to for our first date that got cut down a few months ago, i just cut a chunk out of the stump to preserve and engrave it. It cracked a little bit but i filled the gaps with wood glue and put a few layers of polyester on it. Will it remain strong and in tact??
I'm wanting to use my trees I cut down for sidewalk runners to border my rock and stepping stones..they are not extremely thick but probably about 12 to 15 ft long...do you know if I can do this without them rotting into oblivion?....& how? wow didn't know zima was still around...Zomething different...
Just curious how your tree stumps are holding up since this video ?? I’m been watching your video and I have about four stumps that I’m putting around my fire pit and I’m just curious how yours are doing since you’ve done all this work and kept the bark around the tree stumps..
That seems like a lot of poly spray, your on the 3rd can now, just for a log you might use in the future. Especially when a can is $20 to $26 each i don't think so. I would just go into the woods and cut another log when i needed one.
You're assuming all viewers already know something about this process ... "hit the sides with some poly" ... what exactly is that? Poly what? And why? I had heard linseed oil and have it ready to go, except then I saw something about preserving "end grain". Could you explain the "poly" please?
Please respect someone sharing something in their way which obviously other people do want to watch for their own reasons. No one made you watch it. There's no need to spend your energy being unkind to others. Just go watch a video you want to watch.
