I was very surprised to see that it looked unchanged after 4 weeks, despite you not preserving the fish in any way before casting! As somebody who has had and lost many beloved pets in my life I've come to realize when a pet dies they take a piece of your heart with them which hurts a lot but which also leaves a storage for another animal that needs the love and devotion that they had. A new pet will never fool that hole, the seams and cracks never disappear from the previous pet but the hole in your heart becomes less empty. We on average will outlive the majority of our beloved pets but the joy, happiness and love we receive no matter how short the time together is worth the pain.

You might want to keep the fish in the fridge while waiting for resin to set. Freezer will freeze the body, the cool fridge will slow down decay. If there's something I learned working in a petshop over 10 years is fish decay fast.

I had a fish die recently. Thing started to bloat within 30 minutes. Went to bed and she was alive. Heard my black winged tetras clicking at the top of the water. Check and my sword tail literally has no face/head and is floating at the top. She was alive 30 minutes ago at that time and already started to bloat and be eaten. It fucking crazy/traumatizing sometimes to be a fish owner.

@@cansarinducin5338 yeah i had a cardinal tetra die on me recently and the thing wasn’t even dead before it was being ripped to shreds by the Colombian tetras, I scooped it out into the net as fast as possible and let it die semi peacefully (it had no internal organs at this point and most of its tail was missing but it was still breathing)
@jacobhargiss3839

@@cansarinducin5338 though that isnt actually bloat from decay. when fish die, their air bladder is just no longer being controlled and so it causes them to float, if the air bladder is ruptured, the fish will then sink back down. as for being eaten, fish have amazing senses of smell, they are magnificent at detecting even the slightest chemicals associated with death.

This is really sweet. People often don't care about fish and this is an act of love. If I might make a suggestion, though there's nothing to do about it now, if you do it again you might want to create false eyes. The scales may be held in place by the resin but the eye will definitely not be and in the update you can see that his eyes have degraded. There is still moisture inside the fish's body that cannot escape, and the gut bacteria and whatever microbes were in and on the fish remain there. Decay is inevitable but will be slowed down. It may take years to skeletonize but it probably will. For more permanent preservation of an animal the best options are mummification and taxidermy. Neither of these options are pleasant to perform yourself on an animal you love but are things you can do, and combined with resin the preserved body could be protected for centuries.

@Quickened1
@Quickened1 Год назад
I think it's very unlikely it will ever skeletonize. The bacteria will not live very long because there is no oxygen left. Additionally, the epoxy will never let go of the scales and flesh. A six month update should tell the tale. If it hasn't degraded much from where it is now, it will most likely look like it for centuries. In fact, I can pretty much guarantee it, because I have seen dozens of tarantulas, rattlesnake heads, and various other life forms over the years, scorpions etc, and some have been 40-50 years old. Nah, I think it will look pretty much the same as it does now, for many, many years to come...
@SAOS451316
@SAOS451316 Год назад
@@Quickened1 There are many microbes that require no oxygen to live. You might remember just how foul the egg in resin was after a year. Proteins will break down with time. If you're not very squeamish take a close look at the eyes before and after and you'll see there's already a void in the resin where they once were. That's why I suggested false eyes and it's why you never see a human funerary service with the deceased having open eyes. They go cloudy very soon after death and stop looking like the person's living eyes. Insects are wonderful creatures and preserving them in resin does work better! They have hard exoskeletons which are more resilient than flesh. It's the same reason that bones stick around for a long time. The insects too decay in resin but it's mostly inside the exoskeleton so you don't see it. A severed head of a creature will also preserve better simply because there will be less fluid in it due to, well you know. I'm an engineer and if there's one thing you learn about building stuff it's that nothing keeps the same properties indefinitely. We can simulate and create ageing chambers but we really don't know how modern synthetics will hold up over time. We know that all resins will yellow with UV exposure and we know that plastics break apart much faster than they break down. It's possible that some of the hundreds of resins we have will just crumble away in a couple hundred years. It's not like every formula gets that rigorous wear testing (that I wish my job was because it's more fun than appliances).

@@SAOS451316 it's true, anaerobic bacteria (could) develope during decomposition, but not guaranteed. Even if they do, being sealed within epoxy will limit the extent of their effectiveness. The eyes obviously go first, and yes, I agree fake eyes would be most desirable. I've seen other animals as well, but you are right, eventually, the epoxy will decay, however I would wager, not before any of us are long gone, except if it were left perpetually in direct sunlight. I have seen encasements of flowers that decayed because they were left in windowsills and the resin turned brown and crumbled. Nothing lasts forever, but depending on how these resins are stored, they could potentially last for hundreds of years, maybe eons if kept in darkness. As I said before, I highly doubt this fish will skeletonize, based simply on the numerous things I've seen encased in resin in the past. Suffice it to say, only time will tell...

When fish dry out they become much less... Fish shaped... I think you'd have to replace the water with something (possibly resin) but I'm not sure how. Ooh! I have a bit of an idea on what'd happen. So basically your guts contain bacteria that'll start consuming your body when you die. Gasses will likely build up in your body and crack or break the resin! But, that's just an idea. In practice, 'remains' to be seen :p
@Quickened1

@@trevor7520 no, but it can stay perpetually encased within the void. @trevor7520 Год назад
@@Quickened1 I mean personally I think it'd be dope to have done to me, even with the awareness it'd get narsty in there. i only speculated that the gas would eventually crack the resin because how much gasketed (is that the correct term :p) caskets tend to.. be forcefully opened, let's say, by the contents. Maybe it'd depend on how thick the resin is?
