I agree with what you said about the Planters peanuts doing it for such a long time. What so many people don't realize is that our wonderful government wants to put tabs on everything we do so they don't want us to do it. Besides the fact that the lobbyist for certain areas of our food chain do not want us doing it ourselves either. They would lose business.

Thank you so much for this video! We don't eat a lot of nuts but I wanted to put some up for the long term and was disappointed that all the info I could find said 2 years max and only if stored in the freezer. I recently did an Azure order and got some raw pecans to start. I also noticed that from the last time I ordered wheat berries (2021) the prices of the 50lb bags had gone up at least $10+ across the board. Azure is still a great price, it just really stood out to me when I checked my previous orders.

This is great information. I didn't know you could store nuts in jars. I've always kept mine in the freezer but they are taking up so much space in my freezer now. Would it be safe to take them out of the freezer and jar them ? I'm guessing I would have to let them sit out awhile to dry up any moisture from the freezer. Any advice?
@RainCountryHomestead
@RainCountryHomestead Год назад
Yes, you will want them to dry out for a day or two depending on what they are in and how much is there. I do that when I freeze grains in the bags they come in to kill weevil larvae. Then I open the bag, lay a cloth over to keep dust out, and allow to dry for several days close to our wood stove stirring them once a day with my hands before packing away into mylar bags in buckets

I started out using mylar bags, which is what I have learned from other sites, however, after watching a few of your videos, I think vacuum sealing in jars might be better. I have a question about the sprouted pumpkin seeds I put in a mylar bag with oa, should I leave them as is, or redo them in jars using vacuum sealing? Also I put pancke mix in a mylar bag with oa, redo in jars or leave as is? Thank you in advance
@RainCountryHomestead

If the pumpkin seeds are vacuum sealed or you used an oxygen absorber and the bag is still very tight, I would just leave it, if not, yes I recommend putting in jars. The pancake mix should be fine either way as long as your bag stays sealed

Hi. Uk watcher here. I've just bulk bought some nuts, seeds and dried fruits and wanted to know how to store them medium to long term. Just to clarify, I can pop them into mason jars or mylar bags and vacuum seal them without OA? And I can freeze or store them in a cool dark cupboard? Thank you.
@RainCountryHomestead

Yes, that is what I do but I do not freeze them, I just store them in my pantry

@RainCountryHomestead thank you. Also, would the same apply to raisins, sultanas and other dried fruits like cranberries, goji berries and apricots?

Heidi, how do you open a vacuum sealed jar correctly without damaging the lid? It's never easy for me so I know I'm not doing it right. Thanks.

I think Heidi and a few other people have those cool openers that came out in the 50s or 60s. I don't. I saw someone use the edge of a spoon turned upside down and it works pretty well. Hold the bowl part of the spoon. I haven't bent a lid yet!

How do you decide which way is the best to store each food? When I was in panic mode after finding 12oz box of spiral pasta was $4.89 each at Safeway, I bought a 10lb bag a Cash n Carry for $12. Now what do I do? Help!
@RainCountryHomestead
@RainCountryHomestead Год назад
Pasta rarely needs anything special unless you want to vacuum seal in jars. I just keep mine in the bags they came in and have never had issue and I keep a few year's worth on hand at any given time

hi! i have a question about dried beans from my garden, do i wash them before storing? they’re already dried
@RainCountryHomestead
@RainCountryHomestead Год назад
I never wash mine. I just hang the beans in clusters in the greenhouse and allow them to dry there once the heavy fall rains hit so they do not rot before drying. Then I bring them in and shell them once the outer part is papery
