That energy crisis ended when he left. America went back to lower taxes and drilling was encouraged. Jimmy got caught up in the green energy bullshit and had to reverse course to drill again once the oil crisis hit. But at that time it was already too late and the damage had been done. Biden is too big of a moron to change course like jimmy did. Were stuck with high gas prices for a very long time thanks to this disaster of a presidency

Carter was a good president in my opinion. He was the first president to at least try to fight the inevitable future dependance on foreign oil. He imagined that solar power might be a solution, as was illustrated by the symbolic placement of solar panels on the white house. I can see energy independence being achieved if we built thorium based nuclear reactors. Look up LFTR it's a great idea, and solves so many problems.

I was 10 years old when Jimmy Carter made this speech. I remember that my family, black Americans who voted Democrat in every election, were so angry about this speech. I find it hilarious that almost 50 years later there are still people who talk about Jimmy Carter and his wife as though they were saints, especially during the recent obsequies for Rosalyn Carter. The problem is the Carters may be nice people but the vast majority of Americans don't vote someone to be President to be nice. We want somebody in the White House who solves problems and, more importantly, prevents future problems by avoiding ill-considered public policies. Carter's poor performance was the single biggest factor in Reagan's crushing victory in November 1980.

The economy was emerging from recession in 92. The recovery wasn't complete, but things were improving. Clinton signed the Omnibus Budget Reconciliation on 8/10/93. The economy took a nose dive and Americans elected a Repub majority in both the House AND Senate in 1994 giving them control of Congress for the first time in 40+ years. Conservative budget priciples brought properity. The Repubs became corrupt and gave up those principles after 9/11. Facts are stubborn things. Registered IND in '04

I disagree. Government that won't do fuck all about the problems facing it's citizens is pointless. I'm not saying I'm for dictatorship or anything, just a government that actually tries to solve problems rather than ignoring them and hope they'll go away. After all, that's why we pay taxes, we're paying the government to solve problems we ourselves can't. If they just sit around and do nothing, then it's a waste of our money. If I'm paying for the government, I want to get my money's worth.

$10/gal is expensive but that's not pushing it into rich people only territory. Although the car taxes in some countries are outrageous. But the supposed freedom of a car really depends on where you live. Traffic congestion is so bad that owning your own auto is a huge expense for not a great deal of convenience. Many places have such good car-sharing options - pick up from anywhere and return to almost anywhere that it's smarter to use that and public transit rather than owning your own auto

What accomplishments...they do not outweigh his massive failures. He was an inexperienced man from Georgia, a farmer. He became governor and was suddenly president. A sort of similar story to Sarah Palin actually...the point is he did a lot of horrible things. The Iran crisis, the huge gasoline crisis, the economic crisis...you understate all this and overstate a stupid energy policy. Yes, he did his best. But his best wasn't enough for America at that time, and that is the truth of it.

Ah...Jimmy Carter and the late 70s. He would put on a swaeter, sit by the fire, and lecture the American people about how much we sucked. Worst president of the last 90 years until Brandon showed up.

Carter was a terrible president. Thank goodness Reagan came along in 1980.

What countries would those be? Would that be the thriving democratic socialist nation of Greece that is experiencing almost daily riots due to its collapsing economy? Or would that be Spain or Portugal who are next in line to fail after Greece? Italy isn’t far behind. George Soros says the Euro is a bubble about to burst within the next few months. The UK has implemented austerity measures. Iceland is losing population due to its miserable economic future.
