President Nelson Mandela delivered a lecture entitled ‘Renewal and Renaissance: Towards a New World Order’ - during his visit to Oxford on 11th July 1997. Following the lecture, he met guests at a reception with HM King Charles III (then HRH The Prince of Wales).
In this historic lecture, President Mandela called for a new world order based on mutual respect, partnership and equity. To achieve it, he invited his audience to reflect on our histories of conflict and oppression, and to understand their legacies. During this visit, hosted by the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies, President Mandela agreed to the establishment of the Nelson Mandela Fellowship at the Centre.
Nelson Mandela (1918-2013) was the first black president of South Africa, holding office from 1994 to 1999. He is celebrated worldwide for his central role in ending the country’s apartheid system. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993.
The lecture was introduced by Dr Farhan Nizami, Director of the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies.
