Many people may criticize him, but he is really a great figure in the history of modern human development.

At least as Communism ideologies of systems leadership, he couldn’t convince Mao, but after Mao’s death, he truly opened doors toward Western societies for more Capitalism economy growing and more freedoms and more happiness toward own citizens at the time compared with Mao’s eras. He couldn’t change overnight, but he had done the best he could do at the time. If he didn’t taste the struggles under Mao’s Cultural Revolutions, he might be able to live longer and do more things quickly. I think Deng bringing up their ages was a Chinese cultural thing and he probably expected Reagan to compliment him on his age in return. I would guess Reagan's remark that it "doesn't matter" after 70, taken literally, could have been insulting. Hopefully the interpreter, who should have had the necessary cultural knowledge, conveyed what he meant in the proper form.
