Viktor Traustason explains why people should vote for him #iceland #europe #europeanpolitics #european #icelandic #iceland2024 #icelandicelection #icelandicpolitics
An Icelandic comedian once ran for Mayor of their capital as a joke and won. He initially thought he’d turn down the job but the people had decided they were sick of both the major political parties so he took the job despite having zero qualifications. He spent his term fighting for the people and against corruption and is remembered as one of their best mayor’s ever
wasn't he the guy that, at his victory speech, reprimended his voters for not taking this seriously? as in, why would you vote for someone so underqualified?
Unfortunately the electoral college system means that one of those 2 will win. Voting 3rd party means that you consider both of them equally bad and want to signal who you would like ideally. I don't think they are equally bad, but everyone's entitled to their opinion.
@@adrianthoroughgood1191 Even if one of them wins and my vote is “wasted”, I would still feel the satisfaction that I didn’t support either of them since I think they’re both bad options, but I would accept the result whoever got elected. That’s part of what democracy really is. By the way I would not vote for Robert F. Kennedy Jr. either because I believe someone with as many neurological problems as him should not be trusted/expected to run one of the biggest countries in the world like the USA. That’s why I wish I could vote for this Icelandic guy instead but unfortunately I can’t.
@@shivajayaraman Kennedy literally had worms in his brain, spreads conspiracy theories and is an anti vaxer. If I was going to protest vote I would vote green. It's such a shame the presidential election doesn't use the method used in Alaska. 2 rounds, open primary for all candidates together, highest 4 candidates go through to main election, then ranked choice voting on those 4.
@adrianthoroughgood1191 Honestly though, voting 3rd party shouldn't be that way. There should always be a good option not like the shit hole we see ourselves in right now.
Sounds too sussy. We also had such an 'antiestablishmentarian' which promised loads of autonomy and fight corruption. He later appeared to be corrupt himself and made illegal money on forest trading.
@@Jman16007 For a small country like Iceland this is an equivalent of corporate takeover. Just like Ireland did and now there exists a large disparity between official GDP numbers, inflated by tax-freed companies, and a real life standards of ordinary Irishmen.
@@user-ft9ul5ul5v you mean that wages do not scale up, and consumers pay more taxes than corporations? Depends on what you want as a state. Sucks for the people though.
I don’t think it’s clear from this video that this is the case with him. It’s entirely possible to both be sincere in running and also enjoying doing so, as one probably would if they have any talent for it whatsoever.
@@Jomchen maybe the better term would have been “nation.” It’s an idea of the collective. Either you’re not that bright or you’re willfully obfuscating. Sorry bud, no Kalergi plan here.
@@keithroberts2440 You can’t look like “your nation” either. Your nation is an abstract. It just seems to me like your base assumption is that people should be governed by others who look or are “like” them. I can only assume this is because you have beliefs about “other” kinds of people which are wholly based on your own nakedly racist preconceptions about those “others”. These sorts of preconceptions are often based on myths spread by political hacks who use race or “culture” as a political crutch. In this way they divide working people and their own country by perpetuating baseless hatred.
