The first feeding of the morning does bring with it some sibling rivalry. The oldest eyas is establishing its dominance and the pecking order at this stage and will exhibit food aggression. Survival of the fittest s a catch phrase for raptors to continue the propagation of the species. Sibling rivalry varies between nests depending on the amount of food provided. But even when food is abundant, it is not uncommon to see some sibling competition- lessons learned that will help them cope when they are on their own. Usually it is the first 20 days that aggression is seen but it can be longer. As the chicks get older, the aggression lesses. Just remember there are no bullies, just two eyasses trying to survive.
After the oldest gets to get their fill they usually fall into a food coma and that is when the youngest will be able to eat. The parents feed multiple times a day so the youngest may not eat at each feeding but does eat enough to survive and grow. Mrs. P also actively seeks out the youngest to feed as seen in this video. Thank you for watching!
