Step 1
Measure your nails
You need to measure the inner surface of the nail that comes into contact with the natural nail. Use a flexible tape measure to do this. It is tricky at first but once you get the hang of it, you will speed through this step. I recommend starting your custom press on business with one or two shapes of nail blanks. The most popular are coffin, and almond.
Record your measurements in millimeters and keep them safe so you don’t have to do that again. Different brands will have different measurements, so if you switch brands, you will need to re measure. Also some shapes offer larger sizes than others. My largest shape is Oval, so if a customer has really large natural nails, that may be the only size that they are able to order. I cant change this and so that’s the way it is.
Step 2
Create pre sized templates
Most people fall into one of 4 categories when it comes to the size of their nails. This means that after they measure their nails, they will be able to find an exact/close match to one of the pre sized sets you have created. This way, you can have sets of blank nails already prepped and ready to be painted when people order. If they cannot find an exact match they will have two options. Send their exact measurements to you and you can create their set by using your tip measurements in step one. Or, they can order a set of 20/22 nails. If they order the set of 20/22, you will not be able to guarantee which nail will have designs on them as some will fit and some wont. There is no way around this other than giving you exact measurements.
Step 3
Create visual guides and instructions
Measurement guides
Customers will have no idea how to measure their nails to place an order. Having a clear visual guide is essential. This can be created on your phone or your computer with basic skills. A video demonstration would also be helpful. I recommend people use a flexible measuring tape and go across the widest part of the nail (usually near the free edge) Some sellers recommend using clear tape across the nail, and then removing the tape, laying it flat and measuring with a ruler. Both work well and what the customer will choose to do just depends on what tools they have to hand.
Instructions
You will need to provide the customer with instructions on how to apply and remove the nails. You can include a paper copy with their nails, or you can have it online on your website/Facebook page (if you don’t have a printer) or you could do a little demonstration in a video and include a link with the order. Its completely up to you.
Create Terms and Conditions
When you sell anything, be it a service or a physical item you need to have terms and conditions in place. This is something that you need to create from your own brain. If you use someone elses, you may get into trouble as that is their intellectual property. You can however, look at several different sellers terms and conditions to see what kind of things they have included. A simple search on different sellers pages will show you what they have included. As you move forward with your business you will come across different problems and without a doubt need to update your terms and conditions.
Step 4
Sizing Kits and Application kits.
Rather than have a customer measure their nails, you can opt to send out a sizing kit. This will include one nail of each size. The customer will find the best fit for each nail and report back to you with what tip sizes each finger requires.
You don’t need to provide an application kit with the nails, but you may want to. All the customer will need is some glue, or some adhesive tabs to stick the nails on with. An isopropyl wipe, a file, a buffer, and an orange wood stick.
