Thank you for this I went to Prestatyn specifically meliden every year and I have family who live there and its nice to know history around that location
Very interesting and informative video Andy. As a heritage railwayman I'd just like to add a comment in respect of the steam locomotives working the trains facing uphill, so that the level of water in the firebox could be more easily managed. This was/is true, but they also worked them from the rear, i.e. freight trains were pushed up the gradient to Dyserth by the locomotives, and a guard rode in the brake van at what became the front of the train keeping watch for obstructions, signals, and trespassers. He also operated the crossing gates working in the Dyserth direction. The reason for having the locomotive at the rear was that there were no "run round" facilities at Dyserth, i.e. the locomotive would be trapped behind its own train on arrival because there was no run round loop to release it from that end of the train. This practice continued even when the motive power changed to diesel, as the same issue would arise no matter what the motive power was. I wish I'd seen your video before I walked the line for the first time last week, it would have made for a more informative day! Keep up the good work.
Well done. I used to walk this many times when the track was still down. I loved sneaking into the sheds, and station in Dyserth to see what was inside.
I was on "The Welshman" DMU in 1969, I have cherished memories of the lovely trip. After the line closed "The Flint and Deeside Railway Society" tried to save the line but British Rail were difficult to do a deal with and wanted too much money for it, The F&DRS then moved on to Llangollen to become "The Llangollen Railway Society" and saved that line instead.
Hiya mate episode 2 will be on the talargoch lead mine, working with a local historian for that one, glad you enjoyed the video, and hope your well mate
Truly a brilliant video Andy. It went quick, which was testament to your hard work and good planning. I do enjoy a good railway. I still use public transport and so appreciated the story. Well done mate. Mark
