Executing enemy royals after their defeat can sometimes be kinda tragic too. Here in Mexico after our war against the French invaders, Emperor Maximilian had to be executed or else conservatives would try to bring him or his family back, after all this was the second time they did it. Sadly though, Maximilian appeared to be a genuine benevolent ruler, someone who actually cared for his subjects and wanted to make their lives better, so much so that he alienated his conservative and French backers. A good man in the wrong place it seems.
@JasonParmenter
@JasonParmenter Год назад
It's more complex than that. Maximillian was doomed to be overthrown after the U.S reasserted itself who never acknowledged him as a true ruler of Mexico. It doesn't matter how good he was or how much he alienated his backers, the U.S would have done everything to overthrow him anyways, and they most likely would have succeeded. The U.S saw him as a violation of Monroe, and as an European creation, i.e an attempt of Europe to reassert themselves proper in the Americas.

I mean, Emperor Maximilian only became Emperor because Napoleon III outright lied to him about Mexico wanting him as Emperor, if he knew the truth I sincerely believe he would have refused to become Emperor

I'm a distant relative of the Clan Hamilton (through the Swedish Lines of the Family). The Duke was Captured at Preston and was Executed before the King in Westminster. His Brother Recieved the Duke Title but he was Equally Unlucky on the Battlefield and met his demise during the Battle of Worcester 1651.

Hey :D I haven't had the time to watch this series yet (planning to later tonight), but I wanted to recommend EH's recently-concluded series on the Crimean War before I forgot to haha. It's really good, and -- from the perspective of an art student rather than a history student -- I'd say its say its probably one of their best series to date, the visuals are amazing. Love your videos Chris!

Hey man, how are you? I'm brazilian, discovered your channel a few days ago and loved it. You have some videos in which you talk about the American Civil War and, because of that, I wanted to tell you about something just for curiosity purposes. Here in Brazil we had a famous artist, Rita Lee, who passed away in May. She was a granddaughter of American confederated immigrants from Alabama and Tennessee, who establish themselves in Santa Barbara d'Oeste, Sao Paulo state. Her father, Charles Fenley Jones, named her 'Rita Lee' because of the confederate general Charles E. Lee. Together with her grandfather, after the Civil War many of American families comed to Brazil and builted entire cities, such as Americana, also in Sao Paulo state. Actually, even William Hutchinson Norris, a proeminent confederate figure, Mexican-American War colonel and Alabama senator, immigrated to Brazil after the Union victory. That time slavery was still legal here and Norris began a cotton plantation near Santa Barbara d'Oeste. Also, he became a imperial congressman for the state of Sao Paulo and had a friendly relationship with Brazil's Emperor, Dom Pedro II. Your videos made me remember this and I think it would be interesting to share with you and your audience. Your content is amazing. Keep up the good work. Greetings from Brazil! 🟢🟡 [Sorry if I didn't write something correctly]

But Charles 2nd was immediately proclaimed at Pontefract & in Scotland at his father's death. Charles 1st new this would happen, that is why he chose to continue the fight because if successful his son might have no need to fight for his throne. Many places declared for the King in 1648, including parliamentarian leaders who turned sides because of the growing despotism of men like Cromwell. No English side was ever going to make England a Covenanter nation. The Royalists were firm Anglicans, While the Army & Parliament were Independents or Presbyterian/Puritans. The mutual antipathy continued between the English & Scots, as of centuries before. To Charles, parliament was an advisory council whos deliberations he was not bound to follow, which had gone beyond it's remit & risen in rebelion against his legal authority. He sensed his enemies internal factional desputes, & hoped they would self destruct, giving him his chance to regain control.

It's never occurred to me before that this civil war is analoguous to our own civil war, where "the butcher" Grant and his conscript army of working class northerners against against the Cavalier South with it's own ideals of glory and chivalry. Even more the way the aftershocks of the English civil war sent waves of political exiles here into THIS country to continue the battle on a new blank canvas that led eventually to our own little fracas of 1861-5.

I thought it was interesting that the Ironsides didn’t leave the field of battle and won most engagements because of this, here’s what I learned: 1 - they were puritans (super religious) 2 - they didn’t drink or gamble 3 - they often attributed their victories to god and refused to take part in the traditional spoils of war by raping looting and murdering.

If Charles had capitulated to some minor reforms (such as no longer dissolving Parliament at will), he probably could've satisfied enough Parliamentarians to drive a wedge between the factions. Instead, King Charles refused compromise, and found himself away from his torso.

Hungary created a standing army The Black Army during the medieval period and that ended up keeping them powerful enough to stay independent for centuries (until merger with Austria). Britain might have survived because of their natural fortification (the sea), but without that we might have been swallowed far earlier.

@tomasspak6691 Год назад
