Lyrics:
I found a picture of you, oh oh oh oh
What hijacked my world that night
To a place in the past
We've been cast out of? oh oh oh oh
Now we're back in the fight
We're back on the train
Oh, back on the chain gang
A circumstance beyond our control, oh oh oh oh
The phone, the tv and the news of the world
Got in the house like a pigeon from hell, oh oh oh oh
Threw sand in our eyes and descended like flies
Put us back on the train
Oh, back on the chain gang
The powers that be
That force us to live like we do
Bring me to my knees
When I see what they've done to you
But I'll die as I stand here today
Knowing that deep in my heart
They'll fall to ruin one day
For making us part
I found a picture of you, oh oh oh oh
Those were the happiest days of my life
Like a break in the battle was your part, oh oh oh oh
In the wretched life of a lonely heart
Now we're back on the train
Oh, back on the chain gang

I saw them play this in a bar in I think it was 1982. There was probably between 50 and 80 people there. They played on the dance floor and I stood in front a few feet away from them watching them play. Very fun and cool times.

I'm 56. I experienced joy when this dropped in 1982, and a very deep bittersweet melancholy watching it now. It reminds me of how much we have lost, from a time despite having mountains of troubles and terrible problems, still felt hopeful and optimistic - And so much cooler and real.

The song was dedicated to the late James Honeyman-Scott who died before this was recorded. Former bandmate Pete Farndon died around the time this song peaked. Such a fabulous song. Timeless. The beat, guitars, vocals, lyrics... masterful. Purchased the cassette back in the day. It was the first record I had that my older brother (by 5 yrs) ever wanted to borrow, and we talked about Chrissie Hynde and the band. He shared his Pretenders I & II vinyl and got me into their earlier tracks. Few years down the road my brother couldn't beat cancer and now this song of loss hits pretty deep with me. I think of him every time I hear it and I search out the album when I need to. The jangle guitar chugging drum beat outro may be the finest music ever recorded.

Oh I’m so sorry you lost your brother. I would be completely lost without my brothers. I adore them. My parents played this record a lot when I was little and it brings back so many happy memories of them dancing with each other and laughing. I was born in 1980 so now I’m looking back & going “my parents were so much cooler than I gave them credit for!” Gosh, her voice is just… there’s nothing else like it!!!
