Pretty in Pink is a really nice movie in a lot of ways. Admittedly, we had fairly strong reactions to the love interests in this movie and we didn't love some of the behaviour. But, it is a movie that we're really glad we finally got to do a commentary and reaction video for because of the multi faceted characters and beautiful story telling from John Hughes!

I love that the dad isn’t a deadbeat but the movie just shows how a parent not being able to cope with things affects the child, but they also don’t reprimand the father for it because he’s only human…. Just such a good movie

Totally agree. Her relationship with her dad is the most emotionally real and complex one in the whole film. The scene where she asks him why he can't just forget her mum breaks my heart x

Precisely, I love how Jack is depicted as a loving, albeit, distant parent, and Andie is the one who is taking care of him, not vice versa. The scene where Andie snaps at him to get over being abandoned by his wife a decade prior always gives me chills. Molly Ringwald deserved a better, more high profile, career.

This was because originally Duckie was going to be played by Robert Downey Jr, who had a lot more chemistry and charisma with Andy, and was a much more sympathetic character that made more sense. Cryer just couldn't carry the subtleties of the part well enough to make the ending work.

I mean problematic now yes... but relevant to the time frame. The context in which these kids grew up in is what makes his movies so heartfelt and created connection. He really had his hand on pulse of the teenage experience, and it transcends the decade. Yes the stereotypes, sexist behavior, borderline abusive behavior towards women and lack of representation is problematic from a current lens. But you have to keep in mind the context of the time that these movies were made. Doesn't make them right, but definitely doesn't take away from the social impact these movies had on the generation it was aimed towards and the few who came after. He basically created a genre that is utilized to this day.

@@sammiec2593 Correct, and in fact, it’s important to watch movies like this to see where we were and remember that what we see now was progressive for the time, and what see see as progressive today will one day be seen as regressive. We don’t make progress if we piss on the past while ignoring that the present also has a long ways to go. Hughes did s a great job capturing how these mindsets were just normal at the time, and literally were progressive. Progress isn’t only the finish line. It’s the process.

This is my favorite Molly Ringwald movie. Her character is the kind of empowered young woman with fabulous style that I aspired to be. Duckie is a very relatable character-- desperate, but genuine. He just hasn't grown into his paws yet, as the old-timers used to say. Annie Potts is a hidden gem-- so gorgeous, so versatile, so funny. I like her transformation in this movie. I ADORE this movie but hate it at the same time lmao...! For me, in Duckie's defense but not excusing his actions, I think that having been friends for 8 years helped with their conflict towards the end in that certain things friends know when to let go of it for the moment(like the prom scene where he didn't apologize with words, but he showed up for her regardless and still supported her choosing Blane). I like to think that they talked after at some point about the isolated argument but not Ducks feelings for her cause he's moving on and it doesn't make sense for them as close friends to keep him in that shadow. While he was a verY clingy nice-guy-esque friend, his decisions come from a good place just not the maturest form. She knows he's having a hard time moving on and doesn't enable him but at the end of the day they are each other's comfort. Platonically. lol. I LOVE your guys' reactions, it feels like a lil film-buff get together hehe

I agree with all of this. While I did want them together in the future, I understand your critique. I even liked how he talked to her father first to get some perspective and do agree that many of his rants to Andie came out as more of concern for her than just “you should be with me”, but passive aggressiveness comes out the wrong way and you say the wrong things. Not justifying it, but can relate to that feeling sometimes.

So interesting to see this movie reviewed through the eyes of a younger generation. I remember seeing this film as a kid in the 80s and I loved Duckie and loved the relationship with Andie that was depicted (I mean it was fucked up but I felt empathy for both of them). It always read to me as though Duckie was gay and just wasn't able to accept it. He had focussed all his attentions on his best friend Andie so he didn't't have to face his truth. Over the years many film reviewers have commented on Duckie being a coded gay character (there's no way you could have had a gay character in a mainstream film in the 80s) and fairly recently Molly Ringwald has said that was how she read Duckies character. John Cryer however disagreed and said he saw Duckie as just an effeminate male teen who had a hard time fitting in. The story line of a gay teen hiding from his feelings by falling in love (as much as he can) with his best girl friend, is certainly one experienced by many gay teens that's for sure. Anyways I think the costume department did a great job with this film and personally I think Duckies style is pretty damn fine.

Man, I haven't seen this since I was like 12 or something and back then I felt so bad for duckie. I thought he just cared about her so much and she kinda blew him off. But as an adult? *Shudder* duckie is a massive creep.

I agree with other comments: BOTH dresses looked amazing, and her dad did such a good job in buying the one he got her... I'd wear it! I get that she had to remake them into one, since her thing is design and making clothes and I like what she did with the chest/neck pieces... but I still prefer the original dresses haha

Wow I remember really liking Duckie when I was like 15 watching this movie, but damn as an adult he is quite a bit more annoying. Dude's got a good personality (and style ofc), but his behaviour and desperation really take away from that. At least he shows a little bit of growth by the end - as you said, "the Duckie we knew you could be" lol Also, I don't remember the dad being as great of a character as he was, but wow what a guy

If I could time travel and like wasn't allowed to actually interfere with anything just exist and enjoy the vibe/aesthetic, I would go back to the 80s. And like don't get me wrong, I know it wasn't all like in the movies, I was born at the tail end of them and have vague memories of the times and have seen a lot of pictures. But I also know that sometimes it really WAS that outrageous and that'd be something to see and I would love to just dress that outrageously and blend in lmao but this movie is probably my favorite John Hughes movie. Still has its problems, but the relationship between Andi and her dad really hits home for me. I had an emotionally damaged parent that I often felt I had to parent and remember begging to let go of the thing that had happened and was always driving a wedge between us. Unfortunately for me though, my parent couldn't let things go. But that's why we love movies!

I'm glad you made a comment about Duckie's living situation. So many people don't seem to notice. I think it's there to point out that Andy only thinks she is poor because she is comparing herself to the very wealthy kids at her school. She has a nice house. It may have a basic kitchen, but she has a nice room, she has a car, she has her own phone in her room, she has enough stuff in the fridge that she can just go and grab stuff when she has a friend over. Duckie has a bicycle and a mattress on the floor. I'm not blaming her, because she's a teen, but I think it's a good part of the story.

This is one of my favorite movies of all time. I love the brat pack movies of the 80s; as a child of the 90s being raised on 70s culture through the influence of my step-dad who thought I was "old enough" for movies like these when I was a very young kid.

If this was a 90's flick "the Dice man" would have made a bet he could get Andy to fall in love with him but she would have fallen for Dice instead or go ahead with Duckie but after she found out, big redemption gesture at prom etc.

This movie, among other 80's movies is why I love Otis Redding's music so much. My mom showed me all of these growing up and they almost never fail to play a song or two of his. Duckie being terrible or not, that "try A Little Tenderness" scene lives rent free in my head.

It's always so interesting to watch the younger generations experience movies from the 80s & 90s. As a Gen Xer, so much that was just normal for us, now lands VERY differently. If you wonder why your parents may be kind of a hot mess, it was a very different culture & time - we're having to re-learn & grow into better people, hopefully.

I’m 53 and John Hugh’s movies were a staple of GenX’s teen years. I was into the punk scene and therefore I did not dress or look like any of my classmates and there weren’t too many of us in my school that were like that so we did stand out and we were huge targets. Most of the kids were a bunch of lemmings. There was no such thing as an anti bullying policy ( I had teachers that bullied me for the way I looked), there were no sexual harassment policies, you just dealt with the best way you could, and so on.

Watching this movie now, her listening to the messages on her answering machine, saying "Please, please call..." reminds me of how different times were then. Not just the answering machine, but also hoping the guy from school that she liked would just call her, because he could actually look her number up in a phone book and decide to randomly call, lol!

Ironically Jon Cryer made multi-millions playing tv in Two and Half Men with Charlie Sheen. Andrew McCarthy was part of the “Brat Pack” of 80s films which included other actors Demi Moore, Molly Ringwald, Judd Nelson, Ally Sheedy, Mare Winningham, Rob Lowe. James Spader who plays the douche friend won an 3 Emmy for tv and a Best Actor in Cannes for Sex.Lies, and Videotape. He is in the tv series The Blacklist and starred in the controversial film CRASH. Ducky does end up with the OG Buffy the Vampire Slayer in the end😊

Dweezil Zappa was the singer in the band at Cats, the club where Andrew Dice Clay is the bouncer. Although the two songs his band performs in the film are among the few in the movie to be played in their entirety, neither of them was on the soundtrack album. The other 3 songs actually in the movie in their entirety that are on the soundtrack are Pretty in Pink (played over the opening montage), If You Leave (played at the prom at the end), and Please Please Please (played over one of the Duckie depressed in his room at home alone scenes). The tape that Duckie skips through in Andie's car on the way home from Cats the first time they're there has the rest of the songs that did make the soundtrack, which I always thought was a little weird. ;)
