One of my favorite moments in the film is when Sigourney Weaver lands back in the USA after her accident, carrying a huge stuffed gorilla. She had completed another film that year, "Gorillas In the Mist" and was Oscar nominated for Best Actress in that film. I laughed out loud in the theater when she showed up with that gorilla - nice reference to her other movie!

Same. People got that reference in the audience too. Gorillas in the Mist was so fresh in memory
@lesliesummey5880
@lesliesummey5880 6 месяцев назад
I also laughed! But my problem was no one in my theater got it and I look like an idiot being the only one laughing. I thought it was hilarious! And apparently Mike Nichols did not even see the connection, he just thought it would be funny to have her holding a gorilla. She had to explain to him why it would be funny for other reasons.

@@lesliesummey5880 We were forbidden to go up to the cast and crew and talk to them, but between scenes Melanie and Harrison Ford would wander back into the inner office areas to relax and either read, or chat to the law firm staff, mostly the Secretarial crew. 24 year old hormone driven guys like me were pretty much tied to our chairs and kept at a safe distance. I also go to watch the filming of The Secret of My Success in that building the year prior (1987). I would watch them film on my lunch hour and then got to watch the filming of Scrooged in my neighborhood (Woodside, NY) on my way home at night. It was an interesting year.

There are two older gems that NO ONE is looking at, Both with Harrison Ford. One is "Regarding Henry," and the other is this one. I LOVE this movie because I've been like Tess my entire life. I'm old enough to have seen this on original release in theaters. It was a big hit and Melanie Griffith's break out role. She had been in other things, but this is what made her a bankable star. That is why Harrison and Sigourney got higher billing for smaller roles.

Dakota said in interviews 'that' line is her favourite line from her mom's movies. She asked the director if she could add it in that scene. Personally, I would have leaned into it a bit as it was a warm bonding moment between two employees, like have the assistant reply "...did you just Working Girl me?" to which Dakota smiles and nods and they both laugh.

I still love and occasionally rewatch "Working Girl" as well as Michael J. Fox's "The Secret of My Success." A little Harrison Ford trivia: He was a contract player to Columbia Studios in the mid to late '60s and appeared in a couple of films until the studio system broke down. During the late '60s and early '70s, he appeared in several TV series including classic westerns "Gunsmoke" and "The Virginian", cop drama "Ironside", and the comedy "Love, American Style." In addition to hiring Harrison to use his carpentry skills to expand his office space, Francis Ford Coppola gave him small roles in "The Conversation" and "Apocalypse Now" before George Lucas hired Ford for "American Graffiti."

Sigourney was robbed at the Oscars- she was nominated twice this year- lead actress for 'Gorillas in the Mist' and supporting for her performance here- Working Girls. It was the first time in Academy history when an actor was nominated in 2 categories that they didn't at least win one- usually they won the supporting category (Jessica Lange did it in 1982). Geena Davis won for her quirky performance in 'The Accidental Tourist'. Sigourney should have won... in the lead category- it was between Glenn Close in Dangerous Liaisons and Jodie Foster in The Accused. Jodie won.

1) Kristy, first of all, thank you for choosing this movie. Excellent choice!! 2) Because of this movie and the accolades Melanie Griffith received because of this, Melanie was cast as the lead in Shining Through. Shining Through, overall an excellent movie, but every time Melanie tried to speak German, I just cringed as Melanie butchered the language. Two other supporting actors in the movie spoke German and either German was their second language, or else they listened very closely to their dialogue coaches because both spoke German very well. Melanie on the other hand-fingernails on a chalkboard.

Yeah, would have been better if they could have avoided using German at all, but it's the sort of thing that you're not necessarily going to know before you're fully committed to filming that the actor won't be very good at an accent much less a completely different language that they don't already know. I thought Shining Through was otherwise a decent little movie with good performances.
@The_Dudester
@The_Dudester 7 месяцев назад
@@duanevp Melanie was cast because of her success in Working Girl for which she won a Golden Globe and received an Oscar nomination. She was big box office and that was the only thought going through the director's head when he cast her for Shining Through. A lesser known, but more committed actress would have been so much better in the role. Among those that would have been better is Jodie Foster, Diane Lane, Marisa Tomei, Laura Linney or Helen Hunt. With that said, an actor reads a script and preps for a role by doing things, like learning to sing, adding or dropping weight, learning to dance, play an instrument or learning another language. In Melanie's case, she was like "Hey, I'm big box office, I'll just butcher the language and no one will care." UGH!! That the director let her get away with it tells me that he didn't speak German either.

Melanie Griffin was not just "trying to make a name" when she made this movie. She was already an established name/star who had starred in several mainstream movies when she made this movie. Quick point: Harrison Ford was a carpenter while he was trying to break into acting, and was cast as the older guy in George Lucas' _American graffiti_ but it went nowhere so he was back on the tools and that's when he bumped into Lucas at just the right time to be cast for Star Wars, for which Lucas wanted only unknowns (or relative unknowns). (The only seasoned actors were Brits, so that's almost the same thing.)

This is one of my favorite movies. Like Joan Wilder in "Romancing the Stone" Tess is not a "strong woman", wielding dual machine guns and beating hell out of men twice her size. They had the courage to put her through the hero's journey; starting her out weak, and finishing her strong after her character develops. it makes for a very likeable protagonist who is easy to root for. I wish they would make more movies like this, but, alas, they seem to be going in the opposite direction.

Great reaction! I saw this in the theatre, and I still remember how much I loved it. My favorite thing about it is the sense of yearning from Tess, Melanie's character. I don't care about stocks and bonds, but I grew up poor, and I absolutely understood Tess's desire to try to find a better life -- and how hard that can be, especially for women. I really thought it was smart writing that Tess's blue-collar friends all supported her boyfriend even after he cheated on her -- I know people like this, and it's not like they're bad people, they're just focused on "well, he'll give you a ring and a home and he said he's sorry." So I love the fact that Jack (Ford) respects Tess so much as a person, and that he stands by her in the end even risking his aspect of the deal -- and I love that Trask gives Tess a job. One lovely little detail about the final scene between Tess and her assistant is that on her very first day, she is having lunch with Trask, so obviously he expects big things from her and she is going to rise very rapidly. Wonderful movie, great reaction! Cheers!

This movie is the first time I saw Melanie Griffith in a movie and I already know Harrison Ford from the Indiana Jones movies and Sigourney Weaver from the Alien movies. My favorite part from the film was Joan Cusack offering Jack Trainer (Harrison Ford) "...you want coffee, tea, me?" Did anybody notice Kevin Spacey in the limo with Tess.

As an African American male now in my early 60's, I have always enjoyed this movie. Love how comedy is used throughout, to highlight both gender and class issues that effect the main character. Tess has to deal with it all. She has her BA degree in Business but, because she is in the "secretary pool" they, will not even let her join the firms junior executive training program. Then to top it off her female boss decides to steal her bright idea. If you liked this move and want to see it from a Black female perspective which, is also done as a comedy, please watch the 1996 movie "The Associate" (smile...smile).

Another great movie with Melanie Griffith is Something Wild with Jeff Daniels and I believe the first appearance of Ray Liotta on the big screen. It's at least the first big role for him. Interestingly it's directed by Jonathan Demme just before he did Silence. It is VERY good and very unique.

That coat you call a power jacket at 41.56 was a STANDARD Business coat for 30 years…til about 2000. Many had linings for winter. It was versatile for international travel. We ye old secretaries would feminize with a colorful scarf around the shoulders.

Filled in for someone with a corner office on the 32nd floor of a 50 story building, during the 2 weeks I covered, nothing got done. I was seasick the entire time. Couldn't handle the noticeable building sway, especially seated next to a wall of floor to ceiling glass looking down. Never again worked above the 7th floor. & The placement order of names in relation to the title card (back then) had less to do with popularity & more to do with what their Agent, & Manager could write into the contract.

I forgot all about WG. It was one of my fav movies from the 80s and of course we owned a copy (it's what people did back then). Great reaction. Baldwin plays "the creep" so well. He did the same role in She's Having a Baby, another classic.
