▶Today's Puzzle◀
** OUR NEW KILLER SUDOKU APP IS JUST OUT ON ALL PLATFORMS - LINKS BELOW **
Today's puzzle is by DiMono and it's called Everything Is Wrogn! A metaphor for these strange times... Play it at the link below:
app.crackingth...
Rules: [Get ready, these are special...!]
Normal sudoku rules apply. However, every clue is lying to you! The thermometer bulb is not where it says it is (but is still on the thermo, and each thermo cannot contain a repeated digit). Killer cages don't sum to the number in the corner. Little killer arrows do not give the sum of cells on their diagonal. X and V clues mean the adjoining cells don't add to 10 or 5 respectively. The palindrome line does not contain a palindrome. Black kropki dots mean neither adjoining cell is half of the other. Maximum cells (in blue) are not greater than all four adjacent cells.; Cells touching “quadruple circles” do not include all digits within the circle (but may include some of them).
NB If you are unfamiliar with any of these rules, here is a short synopsis of some of the rules above to explain how they work normally:
Thermo: Along thermometers, digits must increase from the bulb end.
Killer: In cages, digits must sum to the small clue in the top left corner of the cage. Digits cannot repeat in a cage.
Palindrome: Along a line, the string of digits must read the the same forwards and backwards.
We are using new software at the moment so if the above link gives you any trouble you can use the old software here:
app.crackingth...

This might be my favourite puzzle I've made so far. It's certainly up there. Thank you for featuring it, I look forward to watching you lose your mind for the next 3/4 of an hour. The red herring clues are in the puzzle specifically to prevent the solver from assuming that they're all relevant. Without the red herrings, you could spot a black dot and assume that it must contain 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, or 8, which would allow you to shortcut some logic. If one side was a 7, and you knew all clues were useful, that would remove 5 and 9 from the other side prematurely. With the red herring clues, you cannot make that assumption, because you don't know whether the dot is actually useful. My favourites are the 5 little killer clue, and the 357 quadruple circle near the bottom right that touches none of those digits.

This is such a terrific puzzle, in the way a fine work of contemporary art is terrific. In so many ways it evokes the time we are living through. For one thing, throwing "the kitchen sink" into the puzzle mirrors the way in which life is throwing so many different things at us. And then everyone being "wrogn" - well that's obvious, but the obviousness doesn't capture the feeling I got watching the wrongness appear over and over, in several different ways. The cumulative effect had a visceral, emotional impact on me. I didn't think a sudoku could do these things. Simply fantastic.

Asking about some of the seemingly useless clues, my answer: The 12 killer cage in box 2 could have helped you solving the 214 on the thermo, but as per usual you did a Simon on it, ignored it and found your own logic there. The other clues, i don't know, haven't tried solving myself. So i think TheDiMono was just being generous on the number of clues, allthough some clues did made you make decisions earlier on in the solve. But not all! Or you did a Simon on the entire puzzle maybe :P I loved the break in! Very cool how it kept giving digit after digit.
@Zasqdddas
@Zasqdddas 3 года назад
The purpose of the "5" little killer arrow is to show you that not all of the clues are necessarily useful, and the other "useless" clues are there as red herrings, so you don't can't "cheat" the logic by assuming that all of the clues are useful.
@bluefloyd1

I agree. The 4 was so easily placeable. I'm developing a theory that deliberate obvious-misses are a good way of generating comments. Perhaps a result of a youtube consultant. "Let the community tell you what you did wrong on purpose". I do not believe Simon's scanning is that bad.
@FirstLast-gw5mg
@FirstLast-gw5mg 3 года назад
For me the easiest digit was the 9 in box 5, which could be placed as soon as the 9 in box 3 was placed in the false bulb of that thermo. The 9 in box 5 sees every other digit on that thermo, i.e. all of the digits *except* 9, so it must *be* 9.

This is the second time in a month that someone has stolen an idea straight from my brain before I could do it, ha ha. I was going to do one where every clue was a liar! But I don't think I would have created something nearly as clever and graceful.

The meta-wrogn-ness of the puzzle is having clues that cannot possibly be correct, like the 5 killer arrow clue. :)

Yeah. Technicaly, I just takes advantage of the new CTC software, which scans certain clues (at least killer cages ) and sees that they wrong.
@FirstLast-gw5mg
@FirstLast-gw5mg 3 года назад
@@wariolandgoldpiramid Try it again and see if it still does. It's telling me that it looks good. Either they've fixed it, or it's only affecting some users. Also it looks like it saved the solution... I closed the window and reopened it, and all the numbers I'd entered were still in. So you might not have to reenter all of them to have it check it once more.

That was brilliant. I really enjoyed "solving" it. I thought I had solved it until, watching Simon's solve, I realised I misread my pencilmarks and eliminated one digit too early. I got the correct solution and used 95% of the correct logic, but my error meant I never actually used the 44 killer clue, as I had incorrectly eliminated 1 from r9c3 too early. Bobbins! The interaction of those two thermos at the start was fantastic.

Even the "never-useful" clues like the long 5 little-killer played in to the theme as yet another "wrognness", if you assume a hard puzzle should not have superfluous givens...
