One of the most important things to deter furniture scratching is to invest in tall and sturdy scratching posts. Minimum height of 30 inches and heavy. If it moves while your cat scratches on it then they will resort back to your couch.

Trimming Vern's nails was the way to go for me. There was a learning curve for both of us, but I have found that, not only does the scratching of inappropriate objects (like me!) decrease, but for a couple of weeks he is just less aggressive in the use of his claws.

@@Tashpointohhh89 if your scratching post is tiny, maybe that’s why. Cats prefer scratching posts that they can stretch their entire body up towards. Also, you may need to encourage them to scratch it by using positive reincforcement. Ex: You give them treats whoever they are using the scratching post. They may associate food with the scratching post. Overtime you can stop giving them food and they may want to use the scratching post.

He didn't mention it, but one of the main reasons that cats scratch things is because they have scent glands in their paws and it's very important to them to scent mark things in the house. It's their way of marking their territory and claiming it as their own.

Yeah same, I wouldn't do the mouse trap at all, just no. The other things I would try. I'm already trimming the nails and using the spray deterrent. I'm going to get some Sticky Paws to........ I've used cinnamon and Cheyenne pepper in my potted house plants, cats dont like it. He stopped getting the dirt out. I also make a spray out of lavender to calm kitty. He isn't full grown and still does some things. I really hope he calms down. I can't leave him in the living room at night by himself. I've never had a cat I couldn't let just walk around the house before. It's tiring, but i keep trying. Good luck to everyone with cats. ❤

You are supposed to let the glue dry some before you give the cat free run, you know. Or maybe you were using the wrong size or overfilling them? They won't work great for every cat, but there's no reason whatsoever for a cat to be getting stuck to things when using nail caps.
@craigklein5563

Yes cats can get their claws stuck on things with those caps. Those caps create an edge at the base of their claws which can get caught on things. I've seen it happen multiple times to multiple cats, it has nothing to do with the glue!

I've owned several cats. BUT they've always been indoor/outdoor cats and we never had a problem with them destroying anything inside by scratching. Maybe it was because they always used their pent-up energy outside so when they came in they wanted to crash. The one I have now is an "indoor" cat and is very destructive; he scratches the hell out of all the furniture at night. He never goes outside. He's very big and strong and came from feral parents. Seems to me he needs to be acclimated to the outdoors--maybe then he wouldn't be so damn destructive. He's not even that affectionate. Truth be told, I'm sorry I got him now. :/ btw he's about 2 1/2 years old.

I need to get the large soft paws. The medium was way too small for my cat even though he is on the leaner and smaller side. He already " marked" the brand new couch in various places and can't have him completely destroying it. Someone my sister in law knows who trains animals suggested to put aluminum foil in those areas. He thought it was a toy....I want to cry. 😭😭
@realkushman
@realkushman 5 лет назад
Please don't use the soft claws. My cat was injured because of these. The cat can't properly retract their nails while wearing those. Also, you'll come home to your cat missing a few of them, and your precious couch scratched. Next it's a constant checking to make sure they're all on. Don't get started with those

It’s temporary, just keep them there until your cat tries to use the furniture. If you remove it and they still return to furniture to scratch, keep it there until they try using furniture 3 times. They may need a reminder that’s why. Really after 3 bad experiences with scratching furniture, they shouldn’t want to do it again. Remember to provide an alternative like a sturdy scratching post in that area! Also cats are creatures of habit, once they start scratching on the appropriate scratching post, they will use it all the time

Is he neutered? I know that a lot of behavioral problems in male cats can sometimes completely go away once they're neutered. Or, if he's the only male in a group of 2 or more females, maybe give him a cat tree that only he's allowed on and/or play with him more if you're not already? Even adding just a 15-20 min play session a day (or split up like 5 mins, 4 times a day) can make a huge difference. And the cat tree doesn't have to be a large one if you don't have the room for it. Even a thin one with 1 or 2 platforms can be enough. As long as it's tall and sturdy. One that's taller than you would be perfect because cats like to observe everything from above, not just at eye level. And then make sure whenever you see the other cats on it, that you take them off and put him on. He might just jump off right away each time, but it sends the message. It could be that he just needs his own territory. Worked for my cat :) he was already neutered when I adopted him and did what you're describing except he also peed a lot! Even though we had another cat in the house that left him alone and he wasn't competing with, he apparently still needed his own personal, tall tree to call his own. That and adding 10 mins a day to the playtime he already got from us. Almost all the bad behavior stopped after about a week.

@@lotsoflove5378 Eh that's true I guess, but then again, I hate dog hair on my clothes and stuff, but I still have dogs that shed. You just have to brush them regularly, lint roll yourslef, etc. Putting in a little extra time and energy to prevent certain things you don't want happening doesn't seem like an issue to me. Yes, cats have claws and need to scratch things to stay healthy, but you can compromise by having them use things like scratching posts, cat trees, so on and so forth, instead of your furniture.

Buying a beautiful new couch right after adopting my very first kitten wasnt the best decision . My sister who is a cat mom of 5 already suggested that I get these couch protectors from this brand called pawdenme.com. This helped so much, I had them on for a month and within that time my kitten learned to use the scratching post instead of the couch, chairs and bed, all by herself. This one is clear so it doesnt spoil the look of your furniture . Easiest Solution ever! Before this, I was constantly having to keep an eye on her and redirecing her to the scratching post, while working from home.

Hi, thanks for some of your advice, however personally I believe that the claw covers are cruel as they prevent a cat from displaying their natural behaviours and should definitely not be put on a cat that goes outside as it will not be able to defend itself from predators or use it claws to climb trees /fences and escape predators. I personally find the advice on a mouse trap to be concerning and dangerous as a cat could use it's paw to go under the mousetrap and end up with a serious injury. I hope you will review this video. That's why I have always refused to buy any cat a scratching post. I've had a kitten for almost 4 weeks. I think its like 12 weeks old now. 3 out of the 4 weeks I never once saw her try to scratch the wall until this last week. Since she's the only animal here, its not like she saw some other cat do it! She just decided to start trying it. I put the claw covers on and not 25 mins after they'd been on, she went back over to the wall and tried to scratch again. I chased her down, dragged her back over to the wall where I'd seen her try it. Held her up to the wall by the scruff of her neck and said NO SCRATCH!!!! and spanked her. When I tell her to stop doing something (if I can't get there right away) she will look at me and keep doing it. When I am able to move whatever off the stove burner to take it out of the oven or manage to get out of the bathroom or (whatever that is detaining me from getting over there), once she sees me coming she runs. Then she's back 2-3 mins later either doing the same thing, or trying to do something else! She's either going to learn what NO means or she will be finding a new home relatively fast before I pay another vet bill for anymore kitten shots etc because I rent an apartment and I'm NOT replacing sheet-rock and wallpaper. Sorry...NOT HAPPENING.

WOW 😳. Ok let me help you. Ok so first of all, I can take the cat if you want. But also I’ll offer some tips first. ALL cats NEED to scratch. It’s genetic. You NEED a scratch post, just not a wooden one. Rope material scratch posts are best. Cats do not learn with spankings. It will only learn to fear you and develop possible worse behaviors or aggression. Your cat has no idea why you’re upset. They’re not that intelligent. Kittens are babies. Cats cannot be trained to listen hitting it or by shaming it. Look it’s probably easier to put them in a cat carrier while you cook or clean or use the bathroom Or, if you’re going to leave for many hours, get a multi level cat cage. It will fit the litter box, bed, toys, and food and water. www.walmart.com/ip/MidWest-Collapsible-Pet-Playpen-and-Cat-Cage-4-Tier-1-Pillow-51/24251202?wmlspartner=wlpa&selectedSellerId=0 For couches that you don’t want scratched: You can buy couch coverings too! Cheap on amazon. www.chewy.com/bone-dry-reversible-sofa-cover/dp/212076?Bone%20Dry&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIk9mJ6MTa6gIVweDICh2ZZgbEEAQYASABEgIjd_D_BwE For *LONG TERM SOLUTIONS* : Here is what to do: Clap your hands loudly and near their and yell “NO!” When they do something. They will run off temporarily. Then change your voice to a loving one and say something like “look. Over here is ok” and take them to their scratch post and gently push their nails out and run it over the scratch post while continuing to speak kindly. They might take a few times to use it, but eventually they will. Place it near food. Cat likes to scratch sometimes after eating. Same with if they are playing with things they shouldn’t or jumping on counters. Just yell NO while clapping loud. They will jump off. Then change your voice to loving and soft and offer a toy when they get into something they shouldn’t be playing with. Offer to play with them and pet them lovingly and say “good kitty”. *Basically redirection and positive rewards. Rinse and repeat* *Offer treats when they use post* trim their nails weekly with cat clippers if they can handle it. If you need to leave a room for a second , take the cat with you or put it in a carrier for a bit. Or invest in a multi level cat cage for when you need to leave the kitten unsupervised or when you’re at work You also need to play often with kittens. LOTS OF PLAYING. They have lots of energy and are naturally curious. Do not punish them for being curious babies. Do you hit a baby who puts something in his mouth? No. You take it away and say no and re-direct their attention to something else. or kitty proof a separate room (as in no plastic, string toys, yarn, electric wires, glass) in your own room and lock them there with food water litter box and toys and a light on when gone or busy. Lastly, having 2 cats is better because kittens have loads of energy and they can wrestle and keep each other company. *You can also trim your cats nails once a week. Buy nail trimmers at pet stores or amazon Plz stop hitting your cat. You need to love and accept kittens for being kittens. You’re abusing it. Cat “fishing pole” toys with feathers are the best. You can sit and just move the pole around. *PS. I am serious that I will gladly take your cat if you don’t want him/her if you can go half with me on the price of travel expenses for it to be flown to me in NYC*

@@wellnessconnect3368 First of all YES my cat is smart enough to realize she's doing something wrong because she runs as soon as she knows I caught her doing it! And she's not "afraid" because she will turn around and walk right by me a couple minutes later and try doing whatever it is again when my back is turned or I'm on the phone. The only people she's afraid of is strangers. I had her out in the yard on the harness and leash and my neighbor tried to come up to her and tell her how pretty she was and the cat was so scared. My neighbor has cats. She did the same thing to my landlord and my landlord has 3 cats. My landlord reached one finger out to touch her nose when I was holding her and the cat started scrambling to get down and then she ran in the middle of the flower bed to get away from my landlord. She doesnt do any of that to me. She will jump on the bed in the morning and walk on top of me. She plays fetch and gallops back with her toy and literally hands it to me over and over again. So she does "get it". And just for the record I'm not some horrible unreasonable person. And NO, I'm not giving you my cat.

K NO you are NOT a good owner. First of all you *ABUSE* your cat by hitting it and want to get rid of it for simply being a cat. Because it’s clear you refuse to accept cats as they are. I told you ALL CATS NEED to scratch but yet you won’t buy a scratch post and instead decide to to use abuse when that does NOT work. AND you see it does NOT work but you KEEP doing it???? Cats cannot be trained to stop scratching! Do your homework lady. YOU mention you will get rid of it if he keeps scratching. That’s why I offered to take your cat. I’m trying to SAVE it from being placed in a shelter where it will be killed most likely. YOU are the one threatening to get rid of it like a heartless person. And YES it IS aware you get mad, but it’s not aware WHY scratching on your things is wrong. It KEEPS DOING IT BECAUSE IT IS IN THEIR NATURE AND **NOT A BAD THING BECAUSE CATS NEED TO SCRATCH** . Get her a damn scratch post and grow up. Be understanding when she doesn’t listen. Cats aren’t that trainable. It’s also why I like them. They’re independent and stubborn. To good cat owners it’s part of the package and they’re still adorable to cat owners and we know hitting it is *ABUSE* Stop taking out your incompetence on an INNOCENT animal that is only doing what ALL CATS do. Get a squirt bottle if you need to. But I told you clap at them loudly and yell no when they get on counters. And stop wanting them to be something they aren’t! It’s like you want it to be some docile stuffed animal. They need to scratch. Kittens are also just wild period. They cannot be trained to stop scratching or being hyper and stubborn.

@@wellnessconnect3368 Ok well then why did I have a cat for 18 years that was adopted from a shelter after being returned 3 times? She did learn to stop doing it after the first few months. Then there was no problem. She was not "abused". She would meow before I could even unlock the door when I came home from work. Her attitude was "OMG, you're home!" We'd go in the kitchen and eat dinner at the same time or she'd get some treats, I'd get a snack...then we'd go curl up and I'd read a book until I was ready to go to bed. I would play with her before I went to work. I could always tell she'd been playing with her toys when I wasn't home too because I'd purposely pick them up and put them in the toy bin before I left the house. I could always tell which toys she loved the most by the ones I'd find taken out. I am pretty sure she always took the chirping bird out first. Ironically that's the same toy the new cat likes a lot, in addition to her "dental twig" toy. She will fetch the chirping bird or twig over and over again. Bird, twig and pretzel in that order. I know you think I'm supposed to care what you're opinion of me is, but I don't. To each their own. You think I'm the most horrible person on the planet and I think you're a neurotic bitch that nothing is "right" unless its how YOU do it. Well there's more than one way to do something and it doesnt mean its "wrong." So fuck off and don't message me again because if I gave a shit you'd be the first one I'd give it to.

These are such bull crap solutions. I have used the soft claws for 18 years with my old cat. It doesnt stop them from TRYING to scratch. And if they get even ONE cover off their claw, they just go right back to scratching on the wall again. The 11-12 week old kitten I have, I put the claw covers on this morning and she STILL tried to scratch the wallpaper! I rent an apartment, I can't have that shit happening. I've busted her ass for trying to scratch the wall 5 times since 7 am this morning with the covers on. THEN because she decided to stop doing that (for now!) she decided to try and chew up my shoes instead not 25 mins after the thing with the wall. I don't want a cat that continues to scratch. That's why I will NEVER purposely buy any cat a scratching post. Why encourage the thing you're trying to get them to STOP doing?!! Seriously. This cat will look right at you as you're saying NO! and keep doing whatever it is. Then when she realizes she's going to get busted, she runs. 2 mins later, she's back doing the same thing you just told her to stop doing, looks you in the face and KEEPS DOING IT until I pin her down and flick her ear hard and say NO! again. The wall and carpet scratching I will NOT bend on. EVER. So she's either going to stop doing it, or she will be finding a new home. And the thing is, she's been here 4 weeks and only this last week has she tried scratching on the walls. NOT before that. And she's the only cat\animal I have right now. So its not like she learned it because she saw another cat doing it in this house. She just decided to try it within the last week and now doesnt feel like listening. So because I rent, she will either learn to stop or she will be finding a new home. My old cat I got her when she was a year old and she HATED to have her ear flicked. So when I said NO, she stopped IMMEDIATELY. I didnt even have to be anywhere near her. I could be across the room on the phone, see her do something and say NO! and she would pin her ears and spin around. But she wouldnt keep trying to do it. This one will try over and over and over again within the space of 2-3 min each in some cases. I did teach her to play FETCH and no matter which one of her 7-8 toys I throw, she will fetch and bring it right back to me and drop it at my feet. Not just once or twice but like 20 times in a row. So she can't be that "bored." All I know is, the scratching better stop soon!

Wow....you really don't understand cats at all. They are scratching the walls BECAUSE they have no alternative. Buy a cat-tree for Christ's Sake. Not a scratching post, but a proper cat tree. That's a MUST for anybody having indoor cats. Scratching is an important behavior for cats, they enjoy it, they mark their territory with it (which makes them secure & happy!) & they need it for their physical health. I have 4 cats (since they were kittens!) and NONE OF THEM scratch my walls, furniture or anything they shouldn't. And guess what...I never pinned them down, never flicked their ears, never put soft claws on them or whatever. I have several big cat-trees in my flat, they love them & they use them. Problem solved. And one of my cats is a Bengal, meaning a wildcat-hybrid...their drive to destroy things is so much higher than any regular cat. Still my Bengal just scratches the cat-trees. And yes, your kitten is bored. Why? Kittens should never be kept solitary, they need another kitten or young cat to play, cuddle, groom & be with. Kittens that are kept solitary will develop behavioral issues. The human is never enough, because humans are a completely different species. Keeping a kitten solitary is simply animal abuse. You're really NOT a person who should own a cat at all, not a kitten & not an adult cat either. Get a fish or something. You use fear & violence to make them comply. They fear you & they don't trust you. And sadly they have to live with a psycho like you the rest of their life. All what you think about is YOU. You're ignorant, egoistic & a tyrant. Despicable.

@@kaorutooman4747 I didn’t even have to read this person’s comment fully. I got a vibe this person was beyond angry. Once they said they busted their cats ass… that was enough for me. It’s good to educate and pass on good knowledge. Not the crap this ‘vet’ was going on about. I need to invest in a small cat tree for my cat Panther. She adopted us. She’s a little feral. She hates getting picked up. Let alone getting her paws handled.
