This is the fourth installment of NCVC Presents: Countdown to Boston, a FREE webinar series leading up to the 2023 National Training Institute in Boston. It was presented on Aug. 9, 2023, with our friends at the Center for Justice Innovation.
Small business owners and downtown areas in municipalities large and small have one troublesome thing in common - dealing with crime. From graffiti and broken windows to shoplifting and harassment, residents and business owners live with the effects of a revolving door of low-level crime, often at the hands of many of the same people over and over. This webinar will cover an innovative and humane approach that is taking root across the country that not only addresses "quality of life" crimes but also has been proven to prevent re-victimization in the future. In Brooklyn, New York, researchers found that establishing a community court that connected court users to tailored services ultimately reduced harms and quantifiable costs to victims by millions of dollars. We will discuss the core principles of community justice, how courts can be trauma-responsive, the critical work of prosecutors in community justice initiatives, and also outline contemporary research findings on procedural justice and community courts.
