This is a preview of an upcoming video. It shows the preparation of a commercially available solid-state vibrator for use in a tube base for a vintage car tube radio.
As explained in the RCA series, there are a number of projects that I have finished and am working on the editing backlog to post the project videos. Just to give you an idea of the types of projects on the way, but not necessarily in order.
This is for the second of the backlogged projects. The videos of the first project will be out next.

You definitely got me hooked.

LOL. The next project is a little bit different but hope you like it too. This preview is for the second backlogged project. The fourth one coming is really unusual and I thought very interesting and fun to do. Just to keep you hooked - ha.

@@PracticallyFixed I enjoy any and all videos on the subject of vintage radios.

@@terryblackman6217 Ok! I guess rather one classifies a given radio as vintage or nostalgic depends upon one's age I guess. "Gone tech" is always interesting to me. Enjoying technology for me includes following along with its development; observing constructive steps, and in some cases the amusing dead ends and those whose life cycle simply expires due to market pressures, all part of the process. I remember showing my turntable and '70s vinyl collection to a 20-something who was captivated by the whole thing. The icing on the cake was when he could hear the recording right off the needle without the amp. "Holy cow"

Just fascinating looking job on the solid state vibrator. I wonder if Shango will attempt one on his '48 Dodge truck /car AM radio ? It was on a video he just posted two days ago but is saving the vibrator replacement for a rare (for him ) 2nd part video.

A two part video is rare for me too, LOL. But believe it or not, that is what is up next - the first of four projects recorded last fall. This preview is for the second. Will probably make previews for 3 and 4 as well; they make a nice break while editing. The fourth is really interesting I think. Trying to get caught up. Thanks (ps, I hope you don't mind some postseason baseball talk on the radios while I am working on them.)

Nicely done PF, should work great! :)

Thanks Doug! Had second thoughts about putting out a video so much shorter than the others. I had planned on giving some hints during the completion of the RCA (which was recorded after the 4 projects done in the fall) about what was on the way, but couldn't come up with anything at the time. May do a few more to hint at projects 3 and 4 later. Thanks again.

@@PracticallyFixed I think it's a good idea to add a little variety to videos as far as length and content. :)

@@DERB_Seymour_Indiana Maybe, I used to post other items I was fixing such as small engines and propane heaters, but except for one, didn't get many views. Over the holidays I had a problems at my well I had to fix to do with troubleshooting to find a bad starting cap, and replacing and re-plumbing a pressure tank, and didn't record any of it. (of course it was cramped, dark, cold and raining too)

@@PracticallyFixed I don't know. It's difficult to say what people will watch or won't watch, but then I've never really been about trying to please my viewers. I generally make videos about things I'm interested in and if people want to watch then so be it. And I make videos because I enjoy making and editing them. I quickly tired of trying to trying to please everyone, so best to be happy and do what you want. But that's just me. LOL

Would it help to put a metal shield around the vibrator? I have been told that the solid state vibrators are electronically noisy. I can easy see that a square wave would give a number of different undesirable products due largely to the theory that square waves are equivalent to a sine wave at the same (fundamental) frequency added to an infinite series of odd-multiple sine-wave harmonics at decreasing amplitudes. I can imagine that some of those harmonics will reach the IF stages and even the audio stages due to the proximity of the vibrator to the grids of the tubes. I see you done some about filtering and the radio originally had filtering for the vibrator, but I also think the transistors will be more effective and produce sharper edges on those square waves.

Hi Joseph, I wish I could answer your very good questions. The chassis for this radio is all steel with some compartmentalization and I think the placement is far enough away from the RF section of the radio. It seemed to be fine in this case. On the design, I bought it off the shelf so I cannot answer how the filtering was designed or how it works other than the basic principles. In terms of the noise, unfortunately due to the backlog of my videos, the finished project won't be posted for many weeks, but hope you will stop by to see the results. They were good. Thanks

@@PracticallyFixed Just an old radar tech and it is highly probable I am over thinking the situation. I appreciate your time and thoughts.

@@JosephLorentzen Not at all; those are excellent questions. Hopefully someone here may know the answer and chip in. We would both like to know more details. Thanks for watching and your comments are welcome.
