Preview of the Meng (Wingnut Wings) 1/32 Fokker DR. I Triplane The Red Baron 

The Dr.I had a rotary engine, not a radial. In a rotary, the crankshaft is fixed while the rest of the engine, with the propeller attached, rotated around it.

I grew up with Peanuts, and I'll always remember Snoopy, The WWI Flying Ace in his Sopwith Camel, shaking his fist and yelling, "Curse you, Red Baron!"

I hope Meng takes over all the Wingnut kits so we can see them again!

I have the kit. It is amazing. The texture of the doped canvas and stitching is excellent. The instruction are so good you don't really need to buy reference material. I hope Meng does more WW1 aircraft. I like the Black Jacobes plane.

Build it in the iconic 'Red Baron' format. It would be criminal not to!!!

I picked up one of those t-shirts and it looks just as good in person as it does on screen. Now I need the kit to complete the ensemble.

Great video as usual. Thanks to the review. For a perfect cylinder to bend the p.e., maybe use the barrel of the plastic gun supplied. Should be a great fit.

The limited edition version's resin bust is fantastic quality I should say! And together with the kit itself it should make a really good talking point in any display cabinet. Lovely kit. My 2nd Meng kit and again the plastic is great quality. Companies like Airfix, Italeri and Revell could learn a thing or two.

I had an issue with the wings of mine being quite warped. Took a bit of work to get them straightened out.

...in the 60s myself and two brothers had the Revell (bastard 1/28th Scale) DR1, SPAD & Sopwith Camel...thy DR1 was released in two versions...von Richtofen's & Werner Voss' aircraft...

Great to see a WW 1 airplane. They have much more character than modern jet planes. Also I like the idea that they were often just made out of wood and canvas. The pilots were very brave flying these early planes... Hope you are going to paint it in the Red Barons colours.

Strikes are also happening at the Montreal container port where most of the cargo ships from China end up. They go through the Panama Canal,up the Eastern Sea Board, go past New York and Halifax, through the St.Lawerence,and end up sitting on the docks in Montreal. Covid has definitely changed the world...we're back to waiting for the "slow boat from China"... But enough of that...the kit looks great. I've never done a WW1 planned before,but this one I would definitely give a shot...thanks for the review Andy...maybe we'll see a build video soon of this kit?

I've only made one Meng kit which was a fairly old one and although the detailing was very good I found their Styrene to be incredibly soft compared to say Tamiya, so I had to be really careful sanding small parts.

I agree about international shipping. I only order from U.S. suppliers now.

@Andy, for the Machine-Gun, just roll the PE around the finished Gun, so you have the size, then take it off and put it onto the gun that requires PE. the front part should now match.

I think you should do a variant, then get the one that has the bust of the baron in it. then do the classic red !! great video Andy!

Andy I would choose to do one on the other JG1 Tridekkers. Lothar Richtoven, Manfreds brother was also an ace in that unit as was Herman Goring. If I recall correctly Manfred's plane wasn't completely Red painted at the beginning, which makes it an interesting series of possible painting styles as he moved from the factory schema to his all red version. I think quite a lot of other bright colours and patterns was used by other pilots.

Looks like a nice kit and will be very interested in your build review when it's done. The Red Baron is an Icon, and as such the scheme will probably get done to death, so I'd personally prefer to see something else instead or alternatively build two and start your own Jasta!

Go with the Baron scheme, sounds like you want that anyway :). I heard there might be a mistake on the Voss scheme with the cowling, so if you get new decals in for the kit that could be an excuse to build another one. Also, WNW website still has the hints and tips section up which gives advice on folding those barrel PE pieces.

Hard to pass up a MvR scheme, though I know when I build mine it will be in DR.I 477/17 markers rather than his more famous 425/17, it allows the fokker camo and still a decent amount of red. The voss decals are very inaccurate so check your references if you choose that.

While I would like to see how you take on the streaking effect on the plane, I think the all red plane will be more recognizable by a lot more people. When WNW showed the kits at the IPMS Nationals last year I thought that they would release an F.1 and a Dr.1 separately, but I like the kits as released by Meng just fine.

There were many red paint variations to the Baron's triplane. Try one that is not all red.

It will have to be a nice bright red. Will look amazing

MvR flew numerous Tripes... starting with Fokker F.1 102/17 in which he got his 60th and 61st kills. He crashed in Fok. Dr.I 114/17 when the engine threw a piston cylinder which knocked the cowling off. 127/17 which was the first of his tripes known to have had more red added over and above the red struts, cowling and wheel covers that were standard for Jasta 11. 152/17 has been known to have a progression of red painted from the upper wing and tail to overall red. 161/17 (cowling, struts, upper wing and tail up to the forward edge of the fuselage cross and the fuselage top to the rear of the cockpit), 425/17 which was the aircraft he was flying when he was killed and 477/17 which was one of his spares and has been claimed in everything from normal factory streaked green to overall red.

Wonderland models in Scotland have this model available with a bust of Richtoven included.

I'm buying this kit today! Has to be better than that Meng "parts kit" King Tiger I have. Face it, we as modelers seek German aircraft and armor for no other reason than the colorful and creative camouflage choices we have. The DR1 is not left out. Your choices of different colors are almost endless. Check out Ltn. Lothar von Richthofen, Jasta 11, May 1918!! Of the four choices in this kit, I am going for Voss's ride. Thanks Andy!

Mine came with the broken part B6 as well. Going to be a tough fix. Unlike your shop the one I purchased it from has completely ignored my complaint. Anyway, I will be doing the Barons Red because Its iconic and I don't have skills to pull off the crazy streaking on the others. HAHA.

Hi from NZ, After a bit of digging, Meng have the tooling for this kit and one other Wingnut's kit. No idea what that one is sorry. The kit is a bit like a Chinese copy (legal here from what I know) that is commonly seen. The instructions highlight that being not a bit like the old Wingnuts quality. As far as I know there is yet to be a deal on the tooling for the other Wingnuts kits but given what is currently happening at Weta Workshops and Peter Jacksons other business interests here ATM I don't expect that Wingnuts tooling is a priority at the moment. Hopefully when the dust settles there will be a deal to sell the tooling to another company to keep the kits on the market.

I have the Wingnut Wings Sopwith Camel in my stash. I have been waiting for years to bring out a Fokker Dr 1 as a display partner. It's a shame they had to go under before this kit came out.

Hi Andy, I live in Halifax and while your container is very likely here there's no strike going on. The strike is in Montreal and a lot of that traffic is getting diverted to Halifax. Hope you get it soon!

The Red Baron needs to be done . The etch sheets are covered in plastic film because there are no sprues . Looking forward to the build.

There are 2 sides of sticky tape on the PC so you remove one side of tape then you pull off the part you want without cutting, no sanding. the rest of the PC will stay stuck to the tape Ralph

I vote for "other than the Red Baron". However if you do the Red Baron paint, you will have to choose which of his DR-1s to do. No 3 I believe is the one he scored most of his victories in. No 4 he died in. I choose "Other" because EVERYBODY does the Red Baron.

Um, not my field, but didn’t the Von Richthofen version DR have a white rudder(A/C was not ALL red) ? Just ask’n B-T-W that’s a rotary type engine, (Cylinders and crankcase rotate) while a Radial type engine has the (conventional) fixed cylinder/crankcase with a rotating crankshaft arrangement.

Expected to see the other colour schemes at the end of the instructions but you stopped as soon as you got to the red scheme. Are the others not covered in the instructions?

Is it a flare pistol, or a starter pistol? Some early aircraft engines used a percussion cap starter system, rather than a manual propeller start. I'm not an aircraft modeller BUT if Wingnut had ever done the Albatross DV.b, I'd ha d snapped one up. Have seen a real one at a museum, and it is the most beautiful aircraft ever - in lacquered wood / lozenge camo and jasta 16 markings.

For me the red baron, who fought like a Knight and with old-style rules no killing parachutes and he would rather fight a new battle again instead off shooting till the plane exploded!

I would like to see it built as Werner Voss Dr.1 "everyone" will build the "Red Baron" version. So something different would be nice.
