Prey (2022) Movie Review! - feat. OSW Review 

Thanks for having us on, Matt! Hope you guys don't mind us breaking down a movie in wrestling terminology 😃 That bear got pearl-harboured from the front

The reason the hunters burned down the forest was to get the Predator to decloak because of all the ash in the air, there's a few seconds when even the predator notices this as he rubs some on his fingers

Questionable French accents and shoddy dub work aside, I actually like what this movie does with language quite a bit. And it’s just as much of a successor to McTiernan’s other works as the Predator. Several of McTiernan’s movies, including The Hunt for Red October and the 13th Warrior, acknowledge the inherent biases of an English-speaking moviegoer audience when it comes to language, (If they speak foreign, they’re bad guys) and overcome them. In the Hunt for Red October the Russian characters speak in Russian until they get to a word that’s the same in both Russian and English: Armageddon. And from there, they speak English. They’re still speaking “Russian” in the story, but English to the audience to impart their status as sympathetic characters. Similarly in the 13th Warrior, ibn Fadlan, the Arabic protagonist, doesn’t know how to speak the same language as the Viking characters. But the more they talk, the more their language begins to turn into English, to demonstrate how ibn Fadlan is beginning to understand them. This serves the film’s thematic undertone of overcoming cultural barriers. Similarly in Prey’s English dub, the indigenous characters speak mostly English, save for a few important Comanche words. (Once again, imparting to an English-speaking audience that they’re the good guys). But when the fur trappers show up later, they’re shown to speak French, and their translator speaks in English when he’s claiming to be speaking in Comanche. This serves to make the Frenchmen appear just as alien to an English-speaking audience as they would be to Naru. Perhaps even as alien as the Predator itself.

One of the few movies that tried do the sneaky franchising strategy that I felt did create a modest buzz on its initial release was M. Night Shyamalan and Split. No allusions nor advertising prior to hint at any sort of connections to a prior film and enough story drip feed in the film itself to tie it all together.

The actor who plays the brother, his last name is Beavers. When he is tied to the tree with his sister, she tells that story that ends with "I'm smarter than a beaver" That's not too bad lol

When Naru "fumbles" with her bow during the bear scene, it was a call back to one of the earlier scene in the movie where her brother was telling her a story about his bow getting wet, and she just yawns instead of listening to the story. She was just getting out of the mud getting her bow wet, that's why it broke down.

Yeah her suddenly owning a bunch of dudes is a bit surprising, but we do see her kick the shit out if a much larger dude than her when the hunting party shows up ( only losing to a super cheep shot ) and we have nothing to indicate that these fur traders are particularly good fighters themselves either while she has been training to be a hunter and a fighter for some time now ( or so it is implied) but yeah having something more to establish her fighting prowess before that scene would have been good.

I wish the comanche edit was actually filmed using the language instead of an overdub. I believe it would have helped to help us feel more in their shoes. Also Taabe was a much better character than I feel he is getting credit for by most Re: one example: the other warriors say we dont need a cook on this mission. Taabe points out she knows medicine/tracking better than any of you. Just one example where Taabe proves himself to be a good leader ( and a well written character) He is well aware of everybodys strengths and weaknesses and tries to use each person accordingly

Just here to say that you should do more long-form group discussions about movies.

This movie filled the widening gap between Disney/Marvel Gigablockbusters and A24 indies, and I didn’t know how much I needed that until I saw it. This was such a fun listen and the credit-style visual gags were incredible. Hope you do more of this format in the future!

Fun film. This promises to be a fun review. I wouldn't object to a no-dialogue prehistoric man vs predator movie. Samurai/Vikings/WW1 Infantry VS Predator would be neat too.

Lifting the bear over his head, the visual reminds me of those grapefruit-colored translucent action figures from the 90s

We don’t see her constantly fail at hunting. After she max the scorpion axe due to dialing to catch the rabbits, she then uses the invention to catch those same rabbits. I can see her eating them right after the scorpion axe scene. Clearly sets up sure knows what she’s doing, along with all the parkour she did throughout. Makes it believable that she could go John Wick later in the film.

Just in regards to V1's idea to film it twice in both languages, it might sound silly but I believe it's what a lot of Indian movies do as there isn't just one language there. Like RRR was filmed in multiple languages.

I Loved Prey. washes away the stink of 'the predator'... ANyways two notes. One they managed to really sell that this was a 'rookie predator', he made a lot of mistakes and of course cheated like fuck when things didn't go his way. Yet still didn't make the mistake of trying to over explain it or make him 'good or bad' instead of just Alien hunter mindset (In a good PRedator movie, the predator is really more a Deus Ex Machina than a character). Its very nice to get a decent character for the predator but still maintain its alien and unknowable overall feel beyond 'it wants to hunt'. Hollywood take note sometimes not explaining things is the better option! second note is the whole bear scene is very misunderstood for ppl who go 'oh she is such a idiot tryhing to use a arrow agaisnt a BEAR', but if you watch she doesn't actually notch the arrow until the Bear catches her scent and shows its pissed as all get out.... her trying to shoot it with the arrow is a desperation move, not a 'I can take this' one.

Legion was on FX and it was top tier, pre-Disney bullshit, Marvel TV. Totally worth watching.

Prey is a great idea for a Predator movie and would be cool to see the Predator fight around the world also the main actress was in Legion and that's cool also 1:01:07 lmao

Im definitely going to go against the grain here and say predator 2 is better than predators. Predators was almost a scene for scene remake of the first, but not good at all.

Man, I personally thought the Dub was great. That's basically how every film dubbed into Spanish sounds, so it didn't distract me at all.

I would absolutely love to watch you three review other movies. This whole thing was a blast.

I like that even though the Predator tech is still leaps beyond humans' of the time it's still nearly 300 years before one fights Dutch. So it has reusable arrows instead of plasma throwers and a bone mask instead of the iconic metal ones and weird blade traps instead of a suicide bomb. I'm glad Matt mentions it because it fucks with my head so much, that the 360 game Prey was about a native American fighting aliens. Even more so since Prey 2017 is one of my favorite games of it's time yet is a completely different kind of fighting-aliens story. Pretty decent movie overall, I probably agree that it's probably top 2 Predator movie. Then again I haven't seen The- or -s but at least one of those looks unwatchable.

Minor note; the French fur trappers of the era were noted as pretty much the only Europeans in America who got along with the Commanche. It's a bit annoying as they could have picked literally any other foreigners in America and it would of been more accurate.

at a buffet, i personally sneak corndogs into the buffet so others can enjoy them. I hide 6 corndogs in my jacket pockets. it then, is a joy for me to see other patrons of the establishment eat my corndogs thinking they were part of the buffy

I have no problem with Naru taking out the Frenchies. They seem to be portrayed as good trappers, while the comanches are warriors. They set mental traps to take advantage of a creatures weakness versus physical traps if that makes sense

One of the problems I had was that the Native American characters talked way to modern for my liking, like they were using slangs that felt like they shouldn’t have been there.

so weird to use that part of canada for this tribes geographic location since its oklahoma, texas and new mexico, even pre colonization those places dont really sync too well maybe some specific spots in new mexico or the texas/louisiana boarder. theres a few mountain and woodsie spots but weather can be much different. its uaually 35c+ in those areas of America

I think the native language dub was done as the actors paying respect to their heritage, and not as an actual high quality dub.
