Price is Right -- Audio of Johnny Olson's Warmup (1975)

This is a rare audio clip of legendary game show announcer Johnny Olson's classic Warm-Up routine for Price is Right audiences. It was taken from 1975, just as the hour-long shows began. I edited the routine considerably, partly due to time constraints; the full warm-up is 15 minutes long. The video loop is simply there for something to look at.

OMG this is beyond awesome. Johnny Olson was a HUGE part of my childhood as well as Bob Barker. I was so sad when Johnny passed away. There will never ever be another announcer like him.. Thank you for posting this rare gem!!

For those who don't know this, current announcer Rich Fields attended a taping of the show in 1978 (when he was 18), and asked Johnny O how he could get his job. Johnny then let Rich say "Come on down!" into his mic. Little did young Mr. Fields know that it would be part of his job some 25 years later. Ironic, isn't it?

*Only* Johnny could be so casual with the audience, yet so professional when the cameras are rolling. It's a cold day in hell when you hear Johnny mess up while the show's rolling...truly a legendary announcer of many decades.

Thanks for posting this. Johnny O was always my favorite announcer and it's great to get to hear a warm-up, which I think was an important function of announcers that the general public overlooked.

I was also lucky enough to see Johnny Olsen in New York during the 1960s-early 1970s. Johnny was not only real, but he was colorful and a real class act. I also had the privilege of interviewing Johnny for a class project in a college mass culture course. It would be great if a full version of this warm-up were available.

Johnny was the best. To have the energy he had at that age, and maintaining such a hectic schedule. Traveling back and forth between LA and NY to announce game shows, then jetting off to Miami to announce The Jackie Gleason Show. In my office, I have a personally autographed pic that Johnny gave me. You're gone but not forgotten, Johnny Olson!

Also, traveling back-and-forth on weekends from Los Angeles to West Virginia to spend time with his wife of 46 years Penelope Olson. I never thought in my wildest dreams that he was a great singer. There is a video on RU-vid titled kids and Company May 24, 1952 that he host. And, he sings this song titled that’s America to me. I have to say that his voice was splendid.

@bluebear1985 Legend has it that @ that very taping, Mr. Olson gave Rich Fields some advice: "Don't get Barker mad.". How cool it must've been for Rich to have met his idol! Johnny Olson was definitely one of a kind! Johnny is missed to this very day. He was a broadcasting legend, for sure! R.I.P., Johnny Olson...1910-1985.

I heard that they didn't even film a pilot for it. They got it sold to CBS by having a pitch film shot about how it would be updated for the 70s, hosted by Dennis James and Mark Goodson.

Both Johnnie, Rod, and Rich was awesome on the price is right. I don't really care for George Gray. As much as I like Drew Carrie, he is not that great to me on the price is right. I really miss Bob Barker. Are IP to the announcers that we lost. It seems like the only announcer that we have left right now is Johnny Gilbert of jeopardy.

Everything Johnny says for the contestants not to do is exactly what contestants now a day on the Drew Carey version does. Johnny we need you! They obviously aren't prepping today's contestants properly prior to the show start. Some will spend 30 seconds looking to the audience to price some soup or cookies and still get it wrong. I mean really? Why were you picked if you are having that much trouble with a simple item such as that? Bob was the best at dealing with those who delayed. Drew just stares at them blankly waiting.

Jay was so important to breathing new life into TPIR. He worked 24/7 for months in early 1972 with Mark Goodson and Frank Wayne to remake the show. He also did the audience interviews ("worked the line") and had a knack for picking great contestants.
