EV's won't 'succeed' in the medium to long term unless the politicians get out of the mindset of using them to enrich themselves and their friends. The charging infrastructure, apart from Tesla's supercharger network, is appalling and it's not improving. And what about the energy supply problems? In the UK, we can barely cope with current demand let alone the demands of mass EV charging.

Keep in mind not all countries list prices all inclusive and not all manufacturers list prices the same way. For example in N America the taxes and other fees are not shown on the website. Also Tesla lists its prices including delivery while traditional Auto does not. Delivery can add a grand or two. Taxes can add up to 15%. Fees for auto dealers near me are up to a grand.

Prestige cars are VERY expensive in Australia, both new and used. Way more expensive than in the UK. However, there seems to be an unexplained discrepancy in the comparative price of EVs in Australia and New Zealand, which goes beyond the fact that there are still Government rebates for new EVs in Australia and NZ, whereas they've ended in the UK. I don't know why, but even Teslas are cheaper in Australia and NZ than they are in the UK, and that is after Tesla reduced its prices in the UK. Tesla did a smart thing in the UK. After having raised its prices significantly, in-line with the very expensive prices of new competitors in the EV segment, it soon after reduced them again, making Tesla comparatively good value. Given Tesla's lead in technology, range, performance, and of course, charging infrastructure, Tesla is now the price leader in the EV segment in the UK. There is only one brand that significantly undercuts Tesla on price in the UK and that is MG, but the MGs aren't in the same league. Of course, there are other EVs on the market, but I think it's fair to say that MG and Tesla have the largest shares of EV sales in the UK. If you can't afford a Tesla, you are more likely than not buying an MG, and if you need an estate car (wagon), there is only the MG5. Currently, there is no brand in the EV segment in the UK cheaper than MG, and all the other cheaper than Tesla options are so close to Tesla prices that it doesn't make much sense to buy them. The VW ID range feels cheap and nasty even compared to MG, and the VAG group products all have expensive options. Kia's EV6 is in short supply, and is ultimately priced against the Model Y. Hyundai's Ioniq 5 has had rave reviews, but is also priced against the Model Y. Nissan's new Ariya is more expensive than the Model Y, etc, etc, etc. And utlimately, it comes down to charging infrastructure. Tesla has it, while all others still don't. Tesla has reduced its prices so that they aren't beaten on price, and they have the supercharger netwwork. Very smart. And the only brand that's selling EVs for significantly less is MG. The offerings between MG and Tesla, either have expensive options, are from new Chinese brands, or have long wait times. Here in the UK, it seems as if there's now a lot of choice in the EV segment, especially for crossovers, but given the general lack of infrastructure, Tesla remains the compelling choice. Even without the supercharger network, Tesla is price competitive, and when you consider they have leading technology, range and performance, they are price leaders. The only thing that lets Tesla down is its reputation for poor build quality. And the reviews of the Model Y stated the ride was too hard, which has apparently been addressed. Anyway, I've lived in the US, the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Europe and the Middle East, and average cars in the US were by far the cheapest, although that was some time ago. Of course, the US hasn't traditionally had a significant sub-compact market, so the cheapest cars are sold elsewhere. And now we have really cheap cars being sold in the emerging markets, particularly in Asia. There also used to be countries in Europe that were significantly cheaper than the UK, and some people even ordered right-hand drive cars from European dealers and imported them, but no longer. If you look at the prices of European cars in the US, they are significantly cheaper in the UK, both new and used. Maybe new prices of some cars are a little lower in Europe than in the UK, but if you look at used prices that's not the case. In Europe, used prices are relatively high and the average miles (kilometres) covered is extremely high compared to cars in the UK. Overall, the UK is in fact one of the cheaper car markets. And you also have to consider the cost of ownership, particularly maintenance. The UK has a lot of marque specialists offering expertise and competitive labour rates, and there's generally good availability of parts and often multiple suppliers. In New Zealand, for instance, that's not the case. In many countries, if you buy anything remotely special, it's significantly more expensive to buy and also to maintain. There may well be only one importer/dealer in the country and only one service centre. The technicians may have lower expertise. Often, they haven't been on all the factory courses, or you have one trained technician leading a workshop where none of the other mechanics have any specialist marque training or any training with a comparable marque. Trying to keep even a very ordinary car well-maintained can be essentially impossible in some countries where the average mechanic is a 'cowboy'. Lastly, in addition to what RCdiy said, some countries have a culture of dealers charging more than MSRP, commonly termed overs. That hasn't really been a thing in the UK, although Covid resulted in many delivery mileage 'used' vehicles being marketed for overs. However, the market in recent weeks appears to recovering, with more used cars up for sale since Covid, meaning new cars are now arriving in greater numbers, and new car sales numbers, however they are calculated, back that up. And the amount of overs being asked, even for special cars, is also dropping quite quickly.

@@CL-gq3noGosh no, you don't understand the UK mentality. The must have requirement for any EV to be remotely considered useable is that it must do the "standard commute" which is defined as:- Lands End to John O'Groats (i.e. the length of the country), it must do this both ways, without stopping, towing a caravan, with the wipers, lights and heating on in the middle of winter, fully laden and in under 18 hours. I think the base model (fully loaded) needs to be under the GBP40K tax level. Most British people are big time brand snobs; certainly those that can afford such cars new. And next year there'll be the new EV Boxster/Cayman range, which I'd expect to start circa 55K, certainly sub-60K. Maybe it'll be launched at a much higher price than it ends up selling for. One thing's for sure, they'll be much cheaper than a Boxster when three years old. That'll probably be the time to consider one if indeed they are considered to be any good. They'll have to be more than just quick in a straight line. And the build quality and materials quality will also have to be good to retain value. Of course, when they're three years old, the technology will be old hat. EVs looked to be holding their prices until a couple of months ago when prices dropped dramatically. You can now get a Tesla Model 3 Performance, which actually drives rather well, for less than half the new price with less than 30k miles. The pre-facelift MG EVs are also available with less than 30k miles for circa half the price of a new one. Even the Porsche Taycan is not holding its prices. Whereas, the 981 Boxster S, now as old as 11 years, has retained circa 3/4 of its price when new. Will EV technology move on to a point where it doesn't advance rapidly? I don't know. But for the foreseeable future, I think EVs are going to depreciate almost as fast as computers and cellphones, as those that can afford them in the first place will want the latest tech.

Some enterprising company will eventually sell a sub $60K convertible with nice specs in the US. I will be in the market for one beginning in 2026 (about when my Honda Fit will have 170k miles).

We get ripped off in the U.K. with Tax on new Cars. The whole government thought up they wanted less Cars on the road and doing everything to put off anyone thinking about running a Car. If we had American prices for the Model 3 one would be on the drive here in Scotland. The MG will sell like hot cakes, second hand for £30k in a few years will do very nicely. Remember that car prices in the UK, by law are “on the road” prices. The price includes all taxes, number plates, delivery, VAT, The first year’s road tax, everything in fact except the car insurance and fuel, having said that most dealers include a tank of fuel or the car pre-charged.

@@radart6037 It was done about 35 years ago. It was a nightmare before that! Bottom line is you can’t directly compare US prices with UK prices. In Aus, yes, but in the UK it'll be a brave person who buys one over a comparatively-priced Porsche Boxster. I don't understand what Sam is saying about UK prices. Maybe he's just talking about EV prices? But UK prices of prestige brands are way lower than in Aus, both new and used.
@TheMelbournelad

@nigel.w
@nigel.w Год назад
@@TheMelbournelad That wasn't what I was saying. True prestige cars are very much more expensive in Australia than in the UK. Ordinary cars new are somewhat more expensive, except EVs. Basically Sam is wrong in general about UK car prices, but he's right when it comes to sub-premium EVs. One reason is that Oz still has Govt incentives. But I think there's more to it than just that. Otherwise, IMO the Aussie auto scene is a rip-off. It's more expensive than even NZ.

What others have said, plus, IMO the Cyberster looks better. Also, MG has brand recognition, and has also established itself as being well-supported by its dealer network. IMO, MG has the best chance of any Chinese-made brand to be successful in the UK, Australia, etc. Given the prices in Australia for premium brands, it probably stands a better chance there of being a success than in the UK, where one would expect the new Boxster/Cayman EVs to not be much more money.
@JorgeLausell

Hey Sam! I'd wonder if a deal could be made with MG. "Here's prime land for a gigafactory. We'll grease the skids for passing permits for radical vertical integration from mining & refining to chips. motors, cells, & batteries." I get that Australia isn't' tier 1 in terms of market size. They're not out of the game either. The addressable market is large enough for a manufacturer to stake it out. MG moves in, or BYD, or Tesla even, build their righthand drive units & replacement-repair parts plant there and they will cash in!. Our relationships with autos is changing. One new feature will be around how they will keep their value. People will hold on to their autos longer and expect OTA updates & drop in upgradeability standard, albeit as a service and add ons.
