It reveals that three key players in Henry VIII’s court, Anne Boleyn, Catherine of Aragon, AND Thomas Cromwell, all owned a copy of the same printed prayer book.
In this special film, Suzannah tracks the detailed historic detective work that has been carried out by Hever’s curators and Trinity College’s Wren Library, linking the prayer book through the generations from Thomas Cromwell himself to a gift to the library by Dame Anne Sadleir in 1660.

I am not British either, but I as many others love watching English history dokumentaries about their royals. So much drama, better than fictional movies/TV . Honestly, I find the royals repulsive from any country back then, but it is still important historical knowledge we should know,IMO. Cheers

A rug, a pair of scissors, a purse. A curious collection of items. All are significant. My first thought was that Cromwell placed that Book of Hours on the table as he did for his portrait as a sort of souvenir in the way serial killers keep tokens of their kills? I wonder....

Great Documentary. Funny I saw that painting to the side of the fireplace in the FRICK MUSEUM NYC.Holbein's Thomas More was on the other side of the fire place.Definitely worth a visit for Tudor Heads. My favourite museum.

I'm afraid this might make me seem somewhat the nutter, but here goes.. If we believe that the book in Holbein's piccie of TC is indeed The B Of Hours, and it looks like it could be, then seeing it opened, even on screen, and recollecting this famous painting, well it gives me the WEIRDEST feeling, like a kind of magic (not the Queen song🤣), I mean it's like a direct conduit or mysterious wormhole directly into the C16, wow, who needs mind altering substances with historians pulling stunts like THIS? One might almost say "like WOW man", or such.. As ever, Prof Liscomb's presentation is flawless. This is a truly significant discovery, someone in the comments said what a pity it is that Hilary Mantell is no longer with us to share in this. I'm pretty sure that this is indeed the book under advisement. Nice one Prof & team. Impressive. 🌟👍

What a fantastic discovery... The Tudor period is my favourite, as so much happened within it... Suzannah Lipscomb is one of my favourite Historians too... The way she conveys history in her programmes is just brilliant.......would love to meet her one day, as i did with David Starkey..... And Hever is an amazing place.... I live near Rochford Hall, Essex.....itself a player in the Tudor History.....

I would be interested to know about the theological content of the prayer book. Would the book of hours have contained prayers reflecting a thoroughly Catholic theology? What were Cromwell's beliefs about ecclesiology at this time?

Cromwell as a person of faith has too long been ignored. Over the course of his career under Henry he took enormous personal risks for years to facilitate church reform and support the evangelical cause in England. Foxe got this. That prayer book was in Cromwell’s portrait because he wanted it there. God bless Ralph Sadler for preserving this for posterity.

@@lindawunderlich5436 you mean like the way Anne Boleyn helped destroy Cardinal Wolsey’s life and work? His poor health saved him from the executioner’s block. Or the way Anne helped make Queen Catherine and Princess Mary exiles in their own country? Cromwell’s intervention definitely preserved Mary’s status at court and may have prevented her premature death. Or the way “Saint” Thomas More saw to the immolation for their faith of Thomas Hitton, Thomas Bilney, Richard Bayfield, John Tewkesbury, Thomas Dusgate, and James Bainham? But for Anne’s tragic inability to bear a male heir for Henry she very likely would have outlived Cromwell. When Henry decided Anne must go, Cromwell was there to carry out the will of his sovereign just as he did for a thousand other decisions. Of course Cromwell wasn’t about to stand in the way of Henry over someone who helped destroy Wolsey and also threatened Cromwell’s own life. Even Archbishop Cranmer, Anne’s evangelical soulmate, was more than happy to go along to get along. Was he “evil” too?

In Britain when they cover the reformation in history class, is it emphasized how catholics were punished for following their faith? In other history documentaries from Britain it seems glossed over how much money and property was stolen, less the lives destroyed and killed.

I noticed that when I was looking at the oldest churches in england and saw how many catholic churches and monasteries were destroyed during that period of king henry VIII. It made me sad to see that instead of repurposing those churches that they were simply torn down. It bothers me that there are periods in history where historical landmarks are destroyed because of the radical beliefs or events of that period.

Henry was a pig. A murderous, scandalous, pig. His destruction of Englands history by destroying countless Catholic Churches and monasteries was the single worst loss of English Anglo Saxon history. Centuries of priceless manuscripts and family records lost because a fat pig was killing his best people, innocent wives, and so on. His memory be dammed.

If the other one became untenable I would consider it worthwhile. However I think the original garnet would have to be used and that would require further work on the cover. It's tricky because any restoration work becomes as much about the restorer as it does the artefact and that means meddling with history. I'm not saying it shouldn't be done only that it requires us to make difficult choices. I'd prefer a recreation in all its glory (expensive but viable) to a patching up of the old book. If it couldn't be done physically then possibly digitally and made available for a small fee online.

I think it will eventually be found in another Henry VIII collection as a gemstone of unknown purpose. Nobody really thought to look for it. Now perhaps they will. As for the repairs, they should be done with the utmost caution and skill, or not at all.

Did you not watch the video until the end. The theory is that the garnet from the clasp was later installed on the back of the book once the clasp no longer worked. The book is clearly lying flat on the table in the portrait of Cromwell so at the time he owned it that back jewel wasn’t there.

I think the story goes he was in poor health and died on his journey Northwards. He had a mistress/ wife too. I think Henry VIII would have had him executed but his death avoided that. In all other ways, he was a most faithful servant to Henry. Cromwell, served Henry well until under pressure to get rid of Anne. I think Cromwell, imo,was a wily operator He was born in London but lived abroad, Belgium? For a few years under patronage The only person I believe Henry regretted executing, was Thomas Moore, who was a man of principle

How is that the book’s fault? I don’t care for Cromwell but it’s fascinating that this book survived. I’ve seen a car Hitler owned in a museum. It brings up a lot of ugly emotions but it’s still part of history. You can’t whitewash all the ugly bits out of history. We only learn from contemplating others’ mistakes not by ignoring them.
