Austen was *so* good at writing scathing portrayals of inappropriate aspirants to heroines' hands. Wickham the slimeball, William Elliot the money-grubber, and John Thorpe the boorish lout leap to mind. But she excelled at clergymen. I sometimes wonder if she had specific men in mind, as some of their quirks and turns of phrase seem so true-to-life. Goodness knows, she would have had ample opportunity to observe her father's colleagues. I wonder if any of them recognized themselves in her novels and blushed? Nah -- the curates and vicars Austen depicted were so lacking in self-awareness, they wouldn't have seen themselves in their satirized forms.

@@annamae859 That's not acting. Otherwise all child actors would be replaced by adults. Men would play women and black facing wouldn't be a thing. Costumes and sets wouldn't be necessary. Acting is about ensuring that everything resembles as much as possible to a certain fantasy situation.

P&P 1995 is absolutely the best adaptation of Jane Austen’s novel that I have ever seen. I love the 2005 adaptation as well, but it requires a thorough reading or readings of Jane Austen’s novel, or viewing the 1995 version first, to understand it because there simply isn’t enough time in a two hour film to develop all the nuances of the novel.. The six episodes of 1995 do have the time to develop the story and it is simply said, brilliant. Thank you Andrew Davies for your superb screenplay. And every actor nails their role. Jane Austen would have loved it, I’m sure.🌹

It took me about 15 years to come around to this version having been a fierce proponent of the 1980 version with Elizabeth Garvie and David Rintoul. I've watched the 1980 version close to 1,000 times. What irked me about the 1995 version has mellowed over time and the scene between Eliza and Darcy at Pemberly, and his need to return to the piano room later is one of the finest pieces of cinema ever.

It was such a great series, done so well and with none of today's attitudes and cultural references or signalling to prevailing concerns and ideals. Just pure Jane Austen - and done as well as possibly could be. There was a Vanity Fair series too - every bit as well done, and I loved that too. It was the last blast of the 20th century firing off it's final cultural references - without argument and controversy or attempting to identify in terms of modern UK.

I think the 1995 P&P is my favorite thing to watch. I have it on dvd (finally!) and could watch it over and over. I have several parts of it memorized. Favorite character? Probably Lizzy. Though I adore Colin Firth as Mr. Darcy I think Jennifer Ehle's performance as Lizzy was wonderful. I love the story because when you really like a man like Mr. Darcy you want him to have the best for the woman he falls in love with. Lizzy is well worthy of him because she is just so cool. I love how she turns down his first proposal because it was so insulting in spite of the fact that accepting him would save her family from that stupid sexist entail. But she had higher principles than that. Little by little she does fall in love with him and then accepts him when she realizes he really is a good man and now she loves him. P&P is my favorite book. Other great performances were Mrs. Bennet ("Oh, Mr. Bennet!") and Lady Catherine. All of the actors were just perfect for their roles.

I was 25 when this came out, and it was the first Jane Austen adaptation I'd ever seen. My mom and I watched it together, and we both fell in love with it. It's a show that I easily get lost in, and there's just something about it that I get lost in. My favourite character? I don't know. I always love Elizabeth ("Lizzy") and Jane and Darcy and Bingley, but the more I watch it, the more I love other characters as well. One who's grown on me as far as loving how she's portrayed is Lady Catherine. I can't stand her as a character, and I know that was what Jane Austen intended. But the actress portrayed her so very well. Mr. Bennett is also a favourite of mine, and I feel for Mary. Kitty and Lydia as well, and I always sort of had a thing for Denny. While Adrian Lukas did a great job of portraying Wickham, that character just gets on my nerves. I always want to shake Lydia and tell her to avoid him. haha It really is very difficult, though, to pick one overall favourite character, and sometimes it changes from watching to watching.

I suspect it was written and narrated by AI…

Yes and it cuts off each clip of the actors being interviewed. Very sloppy. If that’s AI, stories of AI taking over the world are greatly exaggerated!

Yes, the "happily" was funny. How does the robotic voice know? I guess if you're not dead or in a wheelchair, you have to be happy.

Beautiful cast. The 1995 film adaptation of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice is my favorite. The actors still look good after 28 years and are good in other performances in which I've seen them.

Going through the cast and telling us their current ages is not interesting and lazy. You could tell what they're doing now or what else they've done not just pinch clips from other peoples interviews

Would be much better video with updates on their lives/ careers, rather than, "they're dead" or "they're not dead yet".

I wish the film and this TV series could be brought into one. It would be perfect. The lovely and very beautiful Rosamund Pike would be Jane, instead of this not so pretty Jane and Lydia would be played by an age appropriate actress.

The 1995 series will always be for me the definitive dramatization with Jennifer Ehle and Colin Furth as the lead characters. I gave up watching this video before I was half way through it. I got tired of hearing that X is living happily at age Y. I wasn't learning anything that I already knew about the actors.

I loved this series, but I still think the casting of the actress who played eldest Bennett sister Jane was odd. For one thing, being 30, she was 7 or 8 years older than the character, and looked it. She was pretty enough but Jane is supposed to be noticeably beautiful, the kind of girl to turn heads of every man in the room. She’s supposed to be the golden child of the Bennett family, having been gifted with both uncommon beauty and a sweet and agreeable personality, the one daughter everyone knows has at least a good chance of marrying a rich man. Elizabeth basically says that to her in the first episode.

This adaptation and the 1940 Greer Garson version both chose to cast a more attractive actress for Lizzie. Susannah Harker's Jane has a lovely serenity and Maureen O'Sullivan's is charming, but both are eclipsed by their respective Lizzies.

For casting and rewriting, the movie demands the highest praise. I have watched this supurbly presented tv production many times, always with great pleasure. The costumes and the language of the time adds to the perfection of Pride and Prejudice. The historical rules re family and inheritances expands the viewing enjoyment with personal judgements on how masculine power governed much of the financial issues in life at that time, so personal feelings of viewers on this subject added to the quality of this time and indicated how unfortunate situations could be eased. Being of English birth, I am exceedingly proud and prejudiced that this successful programme was acted out so superbly, that the love element was portrayed delightfully and if the author could be alive today, she would not fail to be very happy, "indeed". Thankyou Vintage TV Shows.

I worked as a nurse before I retired so I don't see the rerun of Pride and Prejudice until around in the 2015 or so. So Colin Firth is still the best Mr. Darcy I think.

My favorite character was Mrs Benett. I am a fan of Jane Austin. Must have read all her books several time. Of all, pride and prejudice is my favorite. This mini series resembles the book the best. I own the CD ‘s and have watched it over and over again.

I loved the mini series of "Pride & Prejudice" but knew very little of Jane Austen before this series and since it came on A/E Network I was thrilled to see and later got the book which I loved and realized the miniseries follow this great story from Jane Austen. I still love and read it whenever I can. As for my interest in characters were both Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle as Elizabeth Bennett. Plus, the other characters that were magnificent including the Bennett parents and young adolescent daughters. The entire work from A/E Entertainment Network was a masterpiece that could not be copied or duplicated by any other Screenplay except. Davis. So -much beloved CD miniseries was given to me by my daughter on Christmas Day.
