Pride & Prejudice BTS - The Politics of 18th Century Dating (2005) - Keira Knightley Movie HD
This tale of love and values unfolds in the class-conscious England of the late 18th century. The five Bennet sisters - including strong-willed Elizabeth and young Lydia - have been raised by their mother with one purpose in life: finding a husband. When a wealthy bachelor takes up residence in a nearby mansion, the Bennets are abuzz. Amongst the man's sophisticated circle of friends, surely there will be no shortage of suitors for the Bennet sisters. But when Elizabeth meets up with the handsome and - it would seem - snobbish Mr. Darcy, the battle of the sexes is joined.

It's easy to romanticize this time period, and I love this movie, but I definitely can't relate to people in the comments saying "I wish I had been born in this time period". Women had no rights, no way to earn money of their own if they didn't find a husband to support them. This movie and novel are a romantic fantasy that didn't often happen at the time- usually women ended up with men who treated them like property (because technically they were, esp once they were married) and had no way out (divorce was scandalous). I am so thankful I was born when and where I was, because if my options were marry a man who may or may not respect me or become poor and lose everything I have, I'd be a very unhappy and very unfulfilled person. Yeah, dating sucks now, but I don't think that the formalities of the time period made the 18th century any less chauvinist. Dating sucks period, no matter the century.

To all of you who say you're born in the wrong century, please consider your own financial status. If you're middle, or lower middle class (like almost all of us writing here, or even simply blue colar) your life would much more likely be that of the household staff as a maid. Regency England did not yet have a big, rich middle class yet. Also, no wi-fi, think about that! :p
@VCYT
@VCYT 8 лет назад
+ideljenny - that doesn't matter as the same rules apply to all people in England in that era as no law prevents good manners, furthermore the industrial revolution would come to propel a great many folk into the high life, whereas in other nations they were a century behind !
@ideljenny

Also no antibiotics, so you could literally die from a mere getting a cold or fever or simple infection. Terrible medical practices all around. Women couldn't work or be in charge of their own funds/money. Also, rampant racism, so if you're not white, you're pretty much screwed. ...though I DO wish dating was simplier and there were rules that everyone knew and followed so there'd be fewer crossed signals :-)

I think the biggest theme with all of these classic stories that we find so appealing, is the "delay of gratification". How long they wait to form a connection, how subtle they show their affection, how true and genuine it is. That's what melts people's hearts. When a couple makes out on the first date, that anticipation is just lost, and cheapens the relationship. Let alone when people hook up after barely knowing each other, that just baffles my mind. We have so much to learn from this century!

At the same time it seems so perfect to be born in this era, it seems also wrong, because of all the rights women have conquered through decades What I means is that I would love to wear amazing dresses, and live simply and being courted by a man, but I wouldn't appreciate being reduced to a housewife, unable to speak out my mind and chase my dreams It's so oddly contradictory 💔😢 Anyways, I still love everything about the 18th-19th century, and it includes this novel ❤❤

Believe me literally any unmarried woman would lose her mind if a guy treated her with this level of respect. If he could put off the fact that modern society is going to make fun of him for it and do it anyway because he liked a woman he would have a very high odds of being able to marry her as long as other practical concerns were in a reasonable state of order.

David Cavill Im not sure what you're talking about. Sex was not some kind of "sacred act", either it was just to make babies (whether you actually liked your husband/wife or not) or it was pure pleasure. Prostitution was rampant and NORMAL. Many people died of syphilis and other sexually transmitted infections because of it, and it was not uncommon for men to pass these on to their poor wives. Why don't you have a look at their regency satire, because their humour was definitely NOT decent, nor any different from people now.
@whatevergoesforme5129
@whatevergoesforme5129 6 лет назад
David Cavill, I do agree with you. Prostitution has been present since the ancient times but no one will actually say that sex with a prostitute is decent while sex within the bounds of marriage is still seen as a lot more decent than sex outside of marriage even today. This is the reason why most women still feel that they need to get married even though the kind of sexual morality today allows women to engage in premarital sex.

@@DaviDwithD - I think you'd a!ways find individual circumstances where that might be the case, but in the larger picture, far too much is eroded from society. There will always be those objecting to, and making efforts to stomp out, any and every nuance of standard or civility, no matter how far back the goal posts are moved. Many believe that absolutely anything goes,as far as certain proprieties, and very often, those that speak out (even the very notion of objecting) are labeled as hateful, rigid, intolerant, judgmental or bigoted.. It is now, simply , politically incorrect to speak out. (ie. - I may be misinformed, but I am of the understanding that the entire notion of a young man taking a young woman out on a "proper date" has become virtually archaIc, even among most college students attending elite colleges, and among young professionals. Replaced by "friends w benefits?")
@nafuregal1288
@nafuregal1288 6 лет назад
@@davidcavill1518 - Unfortunately, the perspective you impart must sound (to millenials) almost as archaic as the practices of tne late 18th century...yet it wasn't all that long ago when expectations were VERY different. ( ex. I know of a number of cases in whuch teen couples, expecting a baby, got married, and actually STAYED married through the decades,w more children, nice homes, and seemingly functional marriages and adult children. Seems we are too quick today to lower expectations and assume it will be too hard, and could never work.). Just watching a movie like Cinderella Man (based on true story) illustrates how far our expectations for family and marriage have eroded.

We met at class in college, he asked me to a dance where people actually did real partner dancing like ballroom and swing, he followed proper rules and conduct. We were very proper with physical affection, making the first time we held hands on our second date, which was an orchestra concert, a magical moment. We didn't make out until after we were married, which made every kiss he gave me, whether it was on the cheek, forehead, or lips, out of genuine affection and not a desire to satisfy physical pleasure.

People married for business and status those days, not for love. I understand the interviewee's opinion. Though my problem with the 2005 version is that they showed the Bennets as POOR(and I mean tenant farmer or laborer poor). The Bennets are still landed gentry. They have their own carriage, which means you should have at least 2 to 7 thousand pounds a year. They are just poor compared to other landed gentry(like the Bingleys, especially the Darcys). So my philosophy is that , if you want to look at accurate costuming look at 1995 version(though one inaccuracies is that for day wear they all should have long sleeves and be high necked.)and if you want to have more "feels" go watch the 2005 version. Also note that the average wage in regency era is 30 pounds a year( not sure about the exact amount ).

The only thing is that I don't believe we should regret the era we live in now, or what we've learned! We have so many privileges that we, women or men, couldn't have back then. We take what we see from the romantic aspect and form our opinions on how we want others to behave like gentleman or ladies, yet we don't do it ourselves. If you want to find someone like a Darcy or an Elizabeth, first you most likely have to have the same values and beliefs.. I believe I would want to court someone like Charles or Darcy, but first I have to see if my moral compass is a clean as theirs , and do we have the same values and beliefs? People, we seem to forget we need to work on being the best we can be and not expect what is impossible for us at the moment, to be what we think we deserve in a man when in fact we even lack those things, doesn't mean that we should go for a Wickham, but the problem with Elizabeth and Darcy in the beginning is that they were both very judgemental, in the end they helped open both of each others eyes to how harsh a mean spirited they had been to others and one another...They learned from each other. With time and pure thoughts and actions we can achieve anything we willingly and lovingly put our hearts to, but only if it is out of a pure nature of God, or else we might never be satisfied with life, or if we are it is mist likely a delusionment or pleasure that will eventually burn out till we try to find another and than another, cover up one addiction with the other is what we might end up doing, but that will lead to destruction, the differences with Darcy and Elizabeth is they figured out the problems and the reasons they had their problems were their pride and her prejudice, they admitted their faults and confessed and asked each others forgiveness, they dealt with their problems when they realized they had them and tackled them head on, they changed their ways for love and because love is a key to showing us when we are wrong without. Finding a Mr. Darcy isn't the deepest concern of any womans life, it isn't even really a necessity, its finding friends and family who love and support you, who want the best for you, and who help you as much as you should help them. What I'm saying is pure love is hard work, and selfless, but it is also wonderfully worth it, and in the end of the day of this earth, the best you could ever find! Jesus Christ is the purest love I know, and I believe He will find me a pure love in a husband someday as well, and we will worship Christ together..if God will, it is a part of His will for me! If not, it is still part of Gods will for me and Him, Amen! 💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗

For those wanting to live in this time period as a woman you would likely have no to little education and if you were unhappy with your life or marriage there would be very little you could do about it. You couldn't go out and get a job for example, unless in a lowly position. No vote, no say in anything. Men would be allowed to beat you and abuse you and no law protected you. Your husband had complete control over the family finances and could even take your children away against your will. You would have very little control over major aspects of your life. Pregnancy and childbirth were also very dangerous with no pain relief or antibiotics. It wasn't all balls and afternoon tea!

Literally nothing is stopping you girls from bringing these dresses and manners back...we don't have to go the time where we didn't have proper rights. And if you are bringing things back can we bring back no makeup/surgery/shaving expectation as well , they were not required in that era either.

P&P concentrates on the well off. For most people in England times were not better than now- there was massive poverty , exploitation and short lives for millions; disease, stench and squalor while some lived in luxury. Only the rich could vote, women lacked rights. Now the problems of inequality persist (are worsening) and we live in a consumerist age, brainwashed by media, and have largely lost touch with nature, while wars persist and we drive numerous species to extinction. We have made stunning technological progress (which we take too much for granted), have shaken off some absurd beliefs, improved with some aspects of bigotry (e.g towards gays and lesbians) and there has been progress with basic human rights but emotionally we have not greatly matured. We are still selfish and greedy, easily misled and controlled. There is mass obesity and massive surveillance networks, especially in UK. This P&P is a good film but I prefer the 1995 TV series, which has more time for character development and plot details, probably the best TV costume/historical drama

Well I guess I am a few years late but allow me to state my opinion haha. As much as I love to be born in this era, it is very saddening to know that a woman can only depend on marriage. No more, no less. I for one wouldn't want to be a spinster but if I do become one, atleast I can provide on my own without ever depending on someone else's pocket. That aside, I do love pride and prejudice, maybe a few years late but I guess my soul is finding peace with all the recent modern dramas and now it finally did.
