Okay, but where has this movie been all my life?? Plus this poster does NOT do Mr. Darcy's actor justice. Check out my first Bridgerton reaction video (also first time watching): • Bridgerton *first time...
I'm so sorry about how bad the audio is! I was still figuring stuff out at this point 😅 Also, please check out my 24 hour readathon video if you're into that :D ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-nQRrnzivTR4.html
Honestly, this movie falls into the comfort films category. I can keep rewatching it over and over. I have to say it was funny that Mr. Collins made you cringe so much even if this was the first time you were watching (he’s a really good actor because he was very convincingly annoying). But yeah, keep up the good work!
I agree. I think the actor that plays Collins is the same who plays Dr. Thorne in the series of same name. I did not find him cringey in that role. The mark of a great actor is to be able to transform and get lost in that role. But still, he is no Daniel Day Lewis❤️
I wish she knew how much P&P affected the fictional world, and that millions have read and loved her works! She was so underrated while alive! She is so powerful and she never knew
I liked Ms. Colin's ..lol...she just wanted the best for her daughters..lol..and you have to admit she went....HARD for her daughters....the best she could... 😂.
@@NadiasCloud Yea, no, me neither. Even cooked eggs make me nauseous. I don't know what it is about the taste. But I do know from British lit that back in the day because medicine wasn't advanced enough raw eggs and milk were used for headaches and hangovers.
Cooked eggs do the same to me unless I can spice them up still I can't taste the egg anymore. At that point it's just for the protein. I do wonder who looked at a raw egg and thought, "If I pair this with milk my head will stop pounding!" But I guess that applies to almost all food pairing.
@@NadiasCloud I always just assumed it was accidental and the first person to try it didn't care because of the splitting head, either they didn't care or they didn't notice that the egg fell into their milk and when it worked they were like "Holy shit I just accidentally made a cure for hangovers I have to tell everyone about this!"
The hand scene has a deeper meaning: back then, it was considered a very intimate exchange if a man touched a woman's bare hands. That's why they're always wearing gloves❤️ I love this movie so much❤️ Edit: typo😁
No, definitely not a weird thing to say. “There’s something pleasant about his mouth when he speaks” is a line in this movie that cracks me up every time. So relatable. ☺️❤️
In this version (and there are many), Darcy is portrayed as someone who is aloof because he's shy (as well as being brought up to be class conscious). In other versions, he's mostly portrayed as simply being a man of few words, a stoic, also very class conscious. As to Mr. Collins, in all versions, he is obnoxious and obsequious, but, unlike other portrayals, there's a moment where he shows that he can be hurt.
Yes, this is definitely a "modern" take on him as being socially awkward. But Darcy in the book is not thid character. We must understand, in the era the book was written, his actions would be completely understandable- socialising during the ball only with members of his party, being more reserved, being a harsher judge of character among essential strangers. This "uwu smol bean" interpretation is fine and cute and nice. But it is not who Darcy is in the original novel, and that should be acknowledged when discussing his character in general
"You have to see it from his point of view." There's a reason the story is called Pride and Prejudice. It's all about introducing you to these characters, showing you the first impressions and assumptions they make when they meet, and then everybody learning how wrong they were.
@@NadiasCloud well jane austen has 6 books pnp, sense and sensibility, mansfield park, persuasion, emma and northanger abbey. Most people like pnp but my favourite is persuasion when you read it you will come across a letter that will make you smile ear to ear. Mansfield park is very underrated but if you give it an honest try its a really good book. Other authors you can try are the bronte sisters thomas hardy etc.
@@NadiasCloud Jane Austen, Thomas Hardy, Oscar Wilde.... Definitely read them. But a great way to begin ur love affair with classics would be to start with Louisa May Alcott's Little Women (both parts, little women + good wives, usually come together, can read the 3rd & 4th if u like).... one of the most heartwarming novels ever...
@@rbhatt2247 that's God send cause I was wondering what to start with and was stumped. Started P&P but I think I still have memories from the movie. So I tried Jane Eyre but idk if it's cause it was midnight 😂 But anyway, I'll try that
I'm watching this because I could never experience watching this movie for the first time again. Watching other people's first times is as good as it gets for us old time watchers.
The scene where she is walking through the house is meant to be, _“this could all have been mine”_ it is the FIRST time her feelings about Darcy change (at least in the book).
You had a lot of great takes on this, especially for a first run through. Most of the nuance went right over my head on my first watch. Jane Austen works are always an intricate chess game - the more you know the social etiquette rules and what the players can and can't do, the more you appreciate the stakes and consequences she's set up. I like how you zeroed in on how Darcy and Elizabeth are both honest at their core and that's why they're drawn together. I never thought about it like that. But it's true, the only reason they sort out their flaws is because they're honest with each other at the first proposal, and respect the other enough to change for the better. I'd definitely recommend reading the book, once you get into its rhythms you appreciate how funny it is. Austen tears apart social nuance and no one is safe from being made to look silly, especially the main characters. Jennifer Ehle who played Elizabeth in the 1995 BBC mini series has kindly done an audio reading of the book during Covid, that she's put up on YT. She's very familiar with the characters and does a fantastic job with the humour. I'd also recommend the 1995 mini series, it's like the fleshed out version compared to this movie's highlights reel. I love both and tend to watch them back to back a few times a year ✨
Thank you so much!! I'll for sure check out her reading. I'm planning on checking out the series but unsure if I'd react to it. I guess I could always react to it even if I don't upload it, just incase I ever change my mind
I watched the movie many times before reading the book and I still absolutely ADORED the book. I find the beginning can be a bit slow, but there are so many more sweet interactions between Darcy and Lizzie that really fill out the love story. Jane Austen really created this whole classic "hate to love" dynamic and no one has done it as well since. Also, there are whole sections of the internet devoted to the "Darcy hand flex" after he helps her into the carriage, kills me every time hahaha.
A whole section! Ha! And yeah, I'm reading a bunch of "hate to love" books for a challenge and I'm noticing a lot of things in the books that I noticed in the movie first, which means it was obviously in the books.
What I love about the way Austen wrote Pride and Prejudice is that she describes her characters’ personalities more than their physical appearance thus leaving it up to the readers to decide what they look like and I appreciate that so much!!
I like the movie because it gives you insight in the norms of then not the norms of now, the interweaving of haste, sorrow, passion, contempt and love forever bound in an exquisite time/story. So many truths with so many lies that ultimately lead to even-handed ness of a man and fair-mindedness of woman. It's a brilliant movie, love the scene of her looking into the mirror for hours so reminiscent of a young mind understanding the gravity of her future that is caught safely within time by someone she least expected.
WOW! Amazingly put! And despite the fact that we can't one hundred percent relate to certain aspects, we can certainly relate to misunderstandings causing problems and people meddling even though they mean good. And also the fact that a lot of people are prejudiced towards the rich and the poor. Amazing work, excited to read the book!
I think..it's very much shows that nothing has changed.....lol....Women want men and vice versa just as bad as back then.....Except we are not protected.....We can get ran through by men ...They didn't play that with Thier daughters back then...You could not get no one daughter pregnant and run off... you couldn't evrn get near unless your intentions were pure....That's why we have Summers walkers and Mary J. bridges...Nothing has changed..zits still the game of love.. Accept...
Being born in 2001, I saw this for the first time soon after it came out in 2005. I grew up watching this over and over in the course of my childhood. It's somewhat of a comfort movie because watching it makes me completely and perfectly and incandescently happy.
One of the best reactions videos I have ever seen. After reading the book, I would recommend the Colin Firth version. This version is pretty, but you get a more complete adaptation adaptation from the Firth version. Though it is about 6 hours long. Great video.
@@NadiasCloud -- The first BBC TV adaptation of the book that I watched was in the 1970s and starred Elizabeth Garvey and David Rintoul. it is very true to the book also. It is 4 hours long. :)
This is a wonderful movie. Since you enjoyed this one so much I would highly recommend you watch Sense and Sensibility, another one of Austen's adaptations. The 1995 version with Emma Thompson and Kate Winslet is excellent.
@@caroleannandcompany1933 Ooooh. I like the 2020 Emma better! Jane Austen wrote Emma as a comedy, and I think the 2020 version does a better job of conveying the absurdity of the characters and the societal norms of the time than the 1990s version. Nadia - also, if you haven't seen Clueless before, it's the "modern" (1990s) adaptation of Emma.
Loved your reaction to this film! I adore the book, and this movie is a really lovely adaptation that does a superb job of condensing it. The casting here is also top notch. This version is an extremely close second to my favorite version, which is the 1995 BBC TV mini series with Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle. Firth and Ehle brought their own magic to the roles of Darcy and Elizabeth. I highly recommend checking out that one, too, after you read the book.
I saw this in theaters and wasn't crazy about it. Not until the internet fandom started swinging did I realize what a gem it is. I saw the movie again and all the parts and the artistry just shone. I'm glad I can appreciate it more, I think Mr Darcy is portrayed with great forethought from everyone involved, and all the actors brought something unique. I love the production diaries and commentary.
Today I found out that one of my guy friends has watched every Pride and Prejudice movie, and i'm just like... AHHHHHHHHHH THANK YOU SOMEONE I CAN GOSSIP ABOUT THE MOVIES WITH
This was a lovely reaction! I love this adaptation of the book and I appreciated how you really thought about what was occurring throughout the movie. You’re very calm and eloquent which I appreciated as well. Mr Darcy really is irresistible, isn’t he? Oh, and the rest of Elizabeth’s family makes me want to hide as well. They’re so embarrassing!
When Mr. Darcy turned Lizzie down it was because he wanted to keep an eye on his friend and see who was interested in him. He didn’t want to be distracted. This is my favorite Jane Austen movie ever. 💞💞💞💞💞
This is one of my favorite all time movies, mostly because I love the book, and the casting is tip-top, and the original score music is divine…. I just subscribed to your channel because I have never seen any other reactions to this! And yes, do the Notebook next… and Love & Basketball and Moonstruck and so many others. Keep this thing going, you are doing great and can grow your channel, for sure 🥰
I've read the book and seen this movie a million times and know it all by heart, but it's still such a treat getting to watch someone else fall hopelessly in love with it, too!
I absolutely love this movie and love watching people enjoy it as much as I do. I can't stop smiling when I watch it either, it's one of my comfort movies. I adore the pace and soundtrack, it's great to watch when you feel sick or mopey, when it rains, at 2am... y'know. It's just a great film. And yes his voice is incredible, you're def not alone in that. Enjoyed listening to you too, thank you!
I love Matthew McFadyen's voice, and I think he is the best Mr Darcy - even better than Colin Firth. I'm envious of Keeley Hawes who gets to hear his voice every day. However the best Mr Collins was in the Colin Firth tv series - David Bamber. He really brings out the smarmy odiousness of Mr Collins (Tom Hollander is a fantastic actor too by the way!).
You can visit people's grand estates while they live there and just ask the house keeper. It's still a thing. I've been to chatsworth which is pemberly in the film
Great reaction. I don't see many reactors, reacting to this movie and it is one of my favorites. I love this movie. I can literally watch it over and over again. Matthew made the perfect Mr. Darcy. Pride and Prejudice is actually my all time favorite book. So I highly recommend reading it.
The Notebook is Amazing! Have tissues ready! I just re-watched it the other day. I didn't realize the mean girl Regina George from Mean girls was the main girl in this. She was Great. I've seen both many times, but I didn't recognize her before. Totally different eras probably why!
Back in the day rich people like that would have a house full of expensive arts and crafts, so I think it was maybe like going to a gallery or a museum. The rich could show off their wealth that way. You would see woven tapestries and paintings on the walls, interesting and intricate furniture, expensive fabrics, busts and other sculptures etc. And of course well maintained gardens.
The first time Darcy held Elizabeth's bare hand in his bare hand to help her into the carriage was probably electrifying for both of them. They did not have skin to skin contact like that in those days, even just for shaking hands, it just wasn't done, except I saw they did with dance in this movie. The same with the men standing when women enter a room or stand up from the table when the women did. All about etiquette I liked how the film maker emphasized that. I love this movie and the one made with BBC, they are both excellent.
Loved watching your reaction to seeing this for the first time! Pride and Prejudice is my favorite book and I have watched most of the movie adaptations. The very first one I saw was with Laurence Olivier and Greer Garson and I compared every other one to it. So the very first time I saw this version I was very biased then I realized I needed to watch it and not compare. That's when I saw the true beauty of the film and enjoyed Matthew Macfadyen's version of Mr.Darcy. This one is now one of my faves. I also love how you pointed out how the heroine and hero show a dislike for each other, I believe Jane Austen started this battle of wits between the main characters and I love it. Maybe I should say one of the first. It's in most historical romance novels that I read. So happy you enjoyed, this was fun! :-)
Yes! Sometimes we don't allow ourselves to enjoy something because of outside influences. Glad that you love this one too. I'm starting to see that she indeed created the 'enemy's to lover' trope haha
I watched this film for the first time last month and since then I've seen it another 3 times. Also, ended up reading the book. I can honestly say your reaction is pretty much the same as mine🤣This adaption of the book is pure comfort!
You absolutely could visit the great houses of gentlemen. They, and their head housekeepers, loved to show them off. It was super common in the period.
Mr Darcy's voice is like butter and honey....not weird to like. But give poor Mr. Collins some credit. If he had only married one of the sisters, the family would not lose their home.
Read it. And also watch the 1995 mini series. It sinks deeper with each watching and reading. There is a reason this is considered one of the very best romances ever written.
I have seen this movie probably 15 times. I love it and your reaction was perfect. What most modern people don't realize when Mr. Darcy at the first dance says that Elizabeth doesn't "tempt him" and she is barely tolerable etc. it is more his guard is up from mothers constantly trying to set him up and entice him with their daughters because he is so wealthy. The book is good, but this movie changed a few things to make it a bit more drama for today's audiences. IMHO it is the best adaptation yet of the book. Also a very good Jane Austen books-to-movies to watch is Sense and Sensibility with Emma Thompson and Emma with Gwyneth Paltrow. Thank you.
There's another older British TV series which is also amazing. This is my favorite Jane Austen novel. I also read books about the era when Jane Austen lived in and it is eye opening and gave me a deeper understanding of how all the characters behaved the way they do. I have to say that as a woman, there's no other time in history that I'd rather live in than modern time. We have come a long way.
If you wanna have fun with Jane Austen's adaptations I recommend you the latest one, Emma (2020). It's so faithful to the book and the characters are hilarious. Also, stunning costumes
@@NadiasCloud Why not 😊 I'll be honest, when I first read the book I thought Emma was an unpleasant character, then I watched the movie and I understood her better. The book is pure comedy, I just wasn't able to see it at first, so keep that in mind ❤️ now is my favourite Jane Austen novel (also, I love Mr. Knightley more than Mr. Darcy. I never knew it could happen LOL)
Omg! You should totally watch other Jane Austen’s movies/series. Pride and prejudice the BBC series, young Collin firth is on it, I also loved sense and sensibility with Kate winslet, Emma Thomson and Hugh grant. ❤️
Not gonna lie, it was the Alan Rickman that got me to give Sense and Sensibility a try. His voice is what’s always done me in. And Matthew’s. Those two voices are just melodic and lovely. So calming.
I have watched all the commentary for this film and am never tired of hearing it several times. I am a romantic and how many of us would love to have a Mr. Darcy in our lives? The film is beautifully made with so much attention to detail. Thank you for your sweet enthusiasm.❤️
I love watching you slowly get more and more and MORE invested in their love story!! So surprised and amazed at how you really didn't know anything about this book/movie/story and watching you see all the little classic moments was so much fun! Thank you so much for doing this video!
This was so enjoyable! Watching you and your reaction made me nostalgic for my first time watch. Also your disdain for Mr Collins and the “Please stop talking” when the Bennett girls sit down, gold.
As much as I wish I was an elegant wild flower like Elizabeth, I'm very much more like Mr. Darcy. Quiet, tall, brooding type with "that aura" and a secret bleeding heart. I'm **really** bad at putting my thoughts in order, I need a few seconds to think before opening my mouth. I just understand the meaning and connections between my toughts before they get the chance of becoming grammar, like the difference between reading for yourself and translating something for others. And I'm much, much more used to keeping my thoughts to myself. Thankfully there's writing and drawing, both of which I enjoy very much. I am very lucky to have found my own "Elizabeth" at a very young age: Just swap the genders for both characters, and there you go. And yes, it was a very clumsy start for both of us, this whole movie is **painfully** relatable, to the point that my fiancé nudges me with a knowing grin whenever he sees Darcy making puppy eyes hahaha. If you enjoy reading, I truly recommend the book (and other books by Jane Austen, really). A wonderful day to you!
That's so sweeet and I can definitely relate to you on not being able to properly put your thoughts in order. Why can't people just GET IT without elaborate speech haha. I'm so happy you found the Elizabeth to your Darcy, rooting for forever for y'all
I laughed so hard at your reaction to Mr. Collins because it's so accurate HAHA One of my favorite things about this is just how awkward Darcy is like, he always looks 10 seconds away from puking whenever he does something out of his comfort zone HAHAH This is absolutely one of my favorite movies, I've seen it so many times and it still makes me just as giddy every time
This film was a good adaptation that captures Pride and Prejudice the best in such a short amount of time. The 1995 adaptation is more accurate to the book but it involves many scenes that contain mundane activities. The book is written with such intent that one can find new meaning each time and I highly recommend. However, it does have scenes that don't seem relevant to the main romance. So if you want a full soap opera where each page is some scandal, it isn't that.
Hunger Games President Snow the Dad!! Lizzie's Younger sister Lydia is Joanna from Hunger Games also! Sister Kitty is in Dr. Who "Blink" my favorite episode, Sally Sparrow! The Aunt that goes with her to Darcy's house is also in Dr. Who she ends up being prime minister of Great Britain temporarily. I can't stand the Mother. Love the Dad!
If you are a reader, then Jane Austen is a must. Because of the time period it can be awkward at first, but you will get into the rhythm and become comfortable with her. Great movies made from them are Emma. I'm partial to the to the 1996, but I've heard the 2020 version is very good. Sense and Sensibility from 1995 starring Emma Thompson, Hugh Grant and Kate Winslet is a favorite of mine. Really enjoyed your reaction!
There are two endings! There is the American ending which has them in front of his house and the normal ending where it ends with her Dad laughing and saying 'I'm quite at my leisure' :D
@@NadiasCloud Oh! ☹️ loved the vid btw! It’s always great to see someone feel so happy about this movie! Even if it means getting your cheeks to hurt like the devil cause you can’t stop smiling 😄🥲. Matthew Macfadyen did an amazing job steeling all of our ❤️’s!
@@NadiasCloud I prefer this movie adaptation much better than the Colin Firth version. This version of the movie and the book are two of my favorite classics. My other favorite classic books and movie combos are Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte and the 2011 movie adaptation starring Michael Fassbender as Mr. Rochester, and Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte and the movie adaptation with our beloved Mr. Darcy (Matthew Macfayden) as Hareton Earnshaw. ❤️
This is like the Cliffs' Notes of the book. There's a LOT more about their families in the book. And it was so good to see how the movie made you smile.
I just appreciate so much how you just stated rubbing the bridge of your nose and eyes at 2:50 and then said please stop talking. It's exactly what I did the first time I saw this movie too. Also your face during Darcy's confession the first time (12:52) just screams, "Man shut up, shut up, shut up, shut up, shut up!"
I've loved watching your reactions as you watched this movie! It's one of my all time favourites (Casablanca being another one, though totally different) and I was delighted to see your responses. My cheeks are hurting too from the smiling, both yours and mine. Thanks for sharing this.
For your question about the touring of estates, back in the day estates held many artworks, books, ect. That the middle or lower class wouldn't have access to. So the rich would open up their houses, usually when not home, for people to take in the arts that they owned. A servant usually would tell people who came up if the house was open for visitors or not and then show them around to the approved rooms (the guest would not normally go off and explore the house alone and not all rooms where open for visitors). I love this movie its my go to when i want to relax, or can't decide what to watch. Every time you pick up on something new or interesting and I always get caught up in their story over and over again. The book took me a while to actually read. I ended up getting a version that had notes in it to explain what the protocols were in some scenes, what certain things meant because some of the phrases are no longer used. And it even had some comments about their favorite parts and why. After I finished it once it quickly became one of my favorite books as well. No matter what year it is, or how much time has changed, we can all relate to the story of Elizabeth and Darcy, or even Jane and Bingley. Your reactions were spot on especially towards the toad that is Collin. Love the actor, dislike the character. After many rewatches i suggest the director commentary for the movie, it will give u more insight on why things where shot curtain ways and even point out things u might not have noticed. Anyways this is my longest comment ever and all done with my phone. So i will end it here. Thank you for this amazing review, I think I'm going to watch the movie now lol
Thanks for taking time to comment! I read it through and I'm glad I did. It really is a timeless story and I'm glad to see people love a book to movie adaptation so much, new Hollywood should take some notes lol
This is one of my favorite movies!! I love that we have more black women doing movie commentaries lol I started doing those on my channel as well; they're really fun to do
