About:
Far beneath the majesty and splendour of the Paris Opera House, hides the Phantom in a shadowy existence. Shamed by his physical appearance and feared by all, the love he holds for his beautiful protégée Christine Daaé is so strong that even her heart cannot resist.
The musical opened at Her Majesty’s Theatre on 9 October 1986 with Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman in the leading roles, and there have been dozens of productions worldwide since then. Now in its 30th record-breaking year, The Phantom of the Opera continues to captivate audiences at Her Majesty’s Theatre in London’s West End, after more than 11,000 performances.

I always feel bad for poor Piangi and Carlotta. They were really caught in the crossfire in the Phantom's obsession and they were comic relief which made the fact that he died and that she was traumatized really fucked up.

But seriously, Carlotta is a trained professional being replaced by a teenager who isn't even old enough for her voice to be fully developed, all because some creep who lives under the building finds said teenager attractive. Why the heck is she presented as a villain for being bothered by this? If Carlotta was portrayed more sympathetically, maybe it would be more obvious to certain phans that the way the Phantom makes Christine feel special with lead roles is a manipulative grooming tactic and not just her due as a talented singer.

Good Riddance! Carlotta was a diva b-tch! Christine had the voice!
@SopranoOfTheNight
@SopranoOfTheNight 4 года назад
@@MissTia777 In order to have a lead role in opera, you need to be able to audibly sing over an orchestra without a microphone. In a time when microphones weren't invented, that's a non-negotiable concern. Girls go through a voice change in their teenage years, which is characterized by years of breathiness making their voices temporarily too quiet to be heard over an orchestra. I have a demonstration of my teenage voice vs adult voice on my channel if you care to listen to it. Anyway, while Emmy Rossum's teenager voice may be good for genres that use microphones or don't have a lot of instrumental backing, her performances in this movie are reliant on the sound crew to be heard at all. That just wouldn't fly in the time period and genre she's supposed to be singing in. Meanwhile, they always cast actual opera singers to do the voice of Carlotta (Minnie Driver, the actress here, is voiced over. You can hear her real voice in "Learn to be Lonely" in the credits). She does some offputting quirks with the accent and stuff for character reasons. But the overall tone of her voice? That's a pretty standard opera sound. If you don't like it you might consider that you might not like opera, which is fine, but this movie is supposed to be about opera. I won't claim that Carlotta is nice or well-behaved in this, but I do think the feelings that prompt her behavior are completely justified.
@MissTia777
@MissTia777 4 года назад
@@SopranoOfTheNight Christine obviously had the voice and the humble personality that's why the public in the movie gave her rave reviews and she was on her way to the top by her singing skill. Sounds like you got pushed over by the teen girl!

In the Broadway play, Carlotta is fat...so basically no one cares if an overweight person is wronged. But fat people aren't allowed in movies so suddenly the dynamic changes and you feel bad for Minnie Driver because she's skinny.

Performance wise, Minnie Driver seemed to be one of the very few actors in this film who got the memo: Be vividly present and don't get swallowed up by the scenery. It's easy for a performer to get lost, overwhelmed by this spectacle of a movie. She succeeded by getting us to focus on her face and body by deft comic timing, apt facial reactions and fluid gestures. Girl has skills.

Lyrics For Prima Donna André: Your public needs you! Firmin: We need you too! Carlotta: Would you not rather have your precious little ingnue? André and Firmin: Signora, no. The world wants you. Prima donna, first lady of the stage! Your devotees are on their knees to implore you! André: Can you bow out when they're shouting your name? Firmin! Think of how they all adore you. André and Firmin: Prima donna, enchant us once again André: Think of your muse... Firmin: And of the queues round the theatre! André and Firmin: Can you deny us the triumph in store? Andre and Firmin- Sing, prima donna, once more! Raoul- Christine spoke of an angel... Carlotta- Prima donna, your song shall live again! André and Firmin- Think of your public! Carlotta- You took a snub, but there's a public who needs you! Giry- She has heard the voice of the angel of music... André and Firmin- Those who hear your voice liken you to an angel! Carlotta- Think of their cry of undying support! André- We get our opera... Firmin- She gets her limelight! Carlotta- Follow where the limelight leads you! Andr and Firmin- Leading ladies are a trial! Carlotta- Prima donna, your song shall never die Carlotta- You'll sing again, And to unending ovation! Raoul- Orders! Warnings! Lunatic demands! Carlotta- Think how you'll shine in that final encore! Sing, prima donna, once more André and Firmin- Surely there'll be further scenes - worse than this Raoul- ...I must see these demands are rejected! André and Firmin- Who'd believe a diva happy to relieve a girl, who's gone and slept with the patron? Raoul and the soubrette, entwined in love's duet! Although he may demur, he must have been with her Carlotta- O, fortunata! Non ancor abbandonata! Andr and Firmin- You'd never get away with all this in a play, but if it's loudly sung and in a foreign tongue, it's just the sort of story audiences adore, in fact a perfect opera! André and Firmin- Prima donna, the world is at your feet! a nation waits, and how it hates, to be cheated! All- Light up the stage with that age-old rapport! Sing, prima donna, once more!

I’ve only seen the full movie once but I want to assume it’s because there is no drama of the phantom attached to Carlotta like there is with Christine. @Landis963
@Landis963 Год назад
@@jamilabrownie There's lots of reasons to go with Carlotta instead of Christine, IMO. The ones you cite, the fact that Christine for all her natural talent has one show under her belt as a leading lady, the fact that Andre&Firmin believe Raoul's pushing his new squeeze (and don't know there's a 3rd party to blame). Besides, the Phantom is incorrect to push Christine into the voiced role here. _Il Muto_ is named after the silent pageboy, not the countess, meaning it's better to cast someone who can play the flashy caricature better as the countess, and allow the one with "charm and appeal" to steal the show from them.

They do this because it used to be a romantic gesture to a woman and also means good luck

@@EditorOfSL Sorry for the late reply - I meant the taller man with the darker hair and larger mustache. The actor is Ciaran Hinds. He played Mance Rayder in Game of Thrones. The other manager is played by Simon Callow (probably best known for being in Four Weddings and a Funeral).

That in the theater world is an expression of maniac level of love from the men in the audience.After all...she is The Diva.200 years ago women like those were in everyone's mouths and loved by every one that saw them on stage.

Love the piece! BUT … the arrangement with so many character interactions at the same time takes away from the beautiful melody.

Those two rich mans wasting their money buying flowers, expensive jewelries, pet animals, new dresses and hand puff, desserts for Carlota. All the efforts benefiting her just to keep themselves famous.

I know the collective breath at the end was for laughs, but Carlotta breathed completely incorrectly for an opera singer. Too high and shallow. All in the shoulders, nothing in the lower lungs or diaphragm.

I’ll be completely honest, and I know that I sound like a purist, but I’ve always really disliked the movie. First off, they took out the phantom’s masquerade costume, then they also take out some of his guilt trips. Not only that, but their Carlotta is pitchy and A for effort seriously but she could have done better. They also play up the diva part of her and not the true beauty behind her singing which is incredibly impressive.
