Hi Steven, thanks for such a great video man. I use more than 1 year already all stuff from primaluciLab, with Eagle4S, Esatto3. and ECCO system dew point controller and etc. So Finally for fix some problems i recommend: if you use for your camera (especial cooling) USB3 port from GPS side on Eagle please use Double shield expensive USB3 high transfer data cable on both side with ferrite beads!!! Second thing - I use Eagle Manager 4.0 Version, 4.1 and 4.2 version on EAGLE 4 S not working (in my case) You can use external Antea GPS possible by on Amazon, very light compact o magnet just put on telescope and connect with short cable to port just replace original antenna. DONE. But different problem is comming- if you use new ECCO2 system Manager 4.0 don't support ECCO2 and you need use 4.1 or 4.2 where GPS with different configuration still not working! we need push Primaluce fix this really simple problem. I working every time on Fielad in mountains ans GPS really important for me . About WIFI - setup startup Manager configuration for all 2 USB ports in OFF position and you problem is gone, if your EAGLE pickup with configuration ON on USB2 ports sometimes wifi not pickup from first time. Problem solved. And for gus how only plan start work with Eagle system - please pay more antention if your Especially workin on Field - think about Power Supply. Eagle need Voltage correcting really powerful powersuply and standart battery like Celestron or Artesky or any different here not working, if you power up mount from same battery. You need use POWER supply 14A wich you need connect to PowerBatter with 220V. If you in You own backyard relax... but on field power its critical moment. because Eagle its not only Computer its powerful power management station. For All your toys. Guud luck i hope this information is OK for you guys.

Great review of the Eagle. I’ve got two if these and love them. One in a remote observatory which has been 100% reliable. Had same issues with IPad and Microsoft Remote Desktop, but it’s fine with my laptop and desktop.

64 bit drivers out from last week Steve which means that you can now input PLL Environmental stats and switch controls from the Eagle 4 directly into NINA. Although I haven't been able to input GPS co-ordinates from the Eagle to NINA yet

thanks for the review. For and all in 1 type of unit, it certainly covers all the bases. Such a hefty price tag though (close to $1600 US).

They certainly aren’t cheap, they are one of those units that either make imaging easier for you or you can get away with other means

I would agree, the price is a lot for just a mini pc with a few sensors, but it's not uncommon in this hobby.

I've used the 4s for about two months as well. I learned: Get your USB3 cables as far away from the GPS antenna as possible. Definitely not touching or running next to the GPS. When you power up, make sure your WiFi device(s) are already idle and waiting to connect. They'll latch on to the Eagle when it wakes up with a signal. If there is nothing to connect to, the WiFi tends to shutdown (to save power?). I really dislike those power connectors. They are tough to line up in the dark, EXPENSIVE! and difficult to selectively disconnect - as you stated. I LOVE that case. That thing is a rigid armored tank. You can mount 80mm refractors on top of it and get basically zero flex. To me, it's the best part about it. Now I have to ask my 'dumb' question. How do you take the numbers that they eye puts out; (18.2, 20.1, 16.6, etc) and convert that to a bortel number? Is it as simple as cross referencing the magnitude? Thx for the review!
@StevenMorrisPhotography
@StevenMorrisPhotography 2 года назад
That's exactly what I do regarding the Bortle number. I just cross reference the numbers the eye puts out with a Bortle number chart. This gives me some kind of indicator as to what I'm imaging under.

I cleared up my GPS problem using 4 clip on cable "chokes" two at the computer end of the USB3 cable and two at the camera end of the USB3 Cable.

I have the GPS module for the celestron mount, it does make things a bit easier, getting the location and date/time. If it continues to be unreliable on the Eagle, you maybe want to try one of them. It reads straight into CPWI / handset. And I can connect the handset into the GPS port, which gives it just a little more reach. Still need to find an extension cable!

I used to have one for my CGEM, system worked well until I pulled it apart and tried mounting it into the mount itself lol, that didn’t work out! Ha ha

The only thing I have changed is the removal of the app from my IPad and installed again / setup. Seems to fix the drop out issue. Also since making this video the Eagle 4 has been positioned differently on my rig and that too has improved the WIFI signal strength.
@DavesAstrophotography
@DavesAstrophotography 3 года назад
It's a hefty piece of kit, didn't think it was that big until see it in your hands! You need a USB SSD instead of flash drive, faster transfer at the other end. What units does it do the Sky Quality reading in? is it mag/arc sec 2 the same as the unideron SQM that I have?
@StevenMorrisPhotography
@StevenMorrisPhotography 3 года назад
Hey Dave, yeah it’s a unit alright! I’m happy with the transfer speeds, so I won’t spend anymore money on the system yet. Couldn’t tell you regarding the sky quality reading, I never actually looked into what it used to read the light levels. Sorry mate can’t help you there.

What is the longest period of time that you have taken to master one particular astrophotography setup? Lots of times we fall down the rabbit hole where you are constantly adding another piece of equipment believing it will make things that much better. The reality is usually not true, as new equipment always presents new challenges of their own.
@StevenMorrisPhotography
@StevenMorrisPhotography 3 года назад
The longest time was 3 years when I owned a Nikon D810a, Celestron CGEM and a William optics Star 71 astrograph. Right now I’m really happy with my setup and I won’t be making any big purchases to change anything. Only small tweaks as I progress into the world of dual imaging.

You see the new software they're about to release? I think it will make a huge difference in your user interface with the eagle...my big problem with the AirPlus is that it only works with Zwo products...ugh...you could never use some other ccd or cmos camera...and I think they only support certain cannon and nikon caneras...
@StevenMorrisPhotography
@StevenMorrisPhotography 3 года назад
Actually I haven’t seen the new software they are about to release, I did update my firmware the other night though. The display looks a little different but I didn’t notice anything significant changes. Couldn’t agree more and I would also like to know if the wifi is better or not as that was a big issue with the Pro version. ZWO asiair system still is a great system if you are new and only using zwo equipment. For those like me who are slowly switching to other brands of equipment because it’s better built it’s not so good for us, that’s where the Eagle comes in and it’s far superior in many ways too.

Thank you for the video. I am using Eagle 4 for couple of months now and I like it overall. However, I have not figured out how "eye" can be recorded by the acquisition software. I use SGP and I not know how it can connect to the "eye". Could you help with that? Another thing is the power supply, what do you use for the voltage regulator?
@StevenMorrisPhotography
@StevenMorrisPhotography 2 года назад
I too am having the same problem, I would also like to record the "eye" data for future references etc. I haven't looked into N.I.N.A fully yet to see how this is achieved however PrimeLuce Lab are bringing out their own software and I've seen this as an added function to stop imaging when the "Eye" records a certain brightness. I'm watching there software with a lot of interest.

Thanks for this. Super helpful. Two questions though, so you think the Eagle 4 is a bit underpowered? That is my concern. Is it neccesary to buy the exepnsive power supply that delivers 14A . I am using a cooed camera and EQ6Rpro and a focuser. Can the supplied car adapter be able to supply that draw?
@StevenMorrisPhotography
@StevenMorrisPhotography 2 года назад
Your very welcome, I use a 12v to 12v Dc to Dc converter to supply 12.5v to my eagle that’s adjustable. It’s supplies 9amps. However prior to all that at the start of my ownership I used the standard cigarette power adapter that comes with the primaluce lab computer and was running my twin rasas on it.
@vivid9394
@vivid9394 2 года назад
@@StevenMorrisPhotography thanks. I didn't want to spent $300 on a 12.8v 14A power supply. What about the 4? You said something about you think the 4s i3 is a good upgrade. Albeit expensive. Is the 4 slow?
@StevenMorrisPhotography
@StevenMorrisPhotography 2 года назад
I still manage with the entry level 4 and according to the intel website the model number of the NUC inside the primalucelab eagle 4 computer base version it has a second ram slot so you can upgrade it to 8mb of ram instead of the standard 4mb. Doing that should speed up the system. This is something I will be doing when I purchase the correct ram for the system.

I have one coming tomorrow. What power do you use on it?
@StevenMorrisPhotography
@StevenMorrisPhotography 2 года назад
I use an 80AH battery back. It depends on how much of the night your going to use it but I would go lithium and keep the power cord as short as you can, you lose a bit of voltage with a long cord I’ve noticed.

Hi Steven, great review! Thanks for sharing your experience. How do you like its power consumption? I'm thinking about adding this unit to my setup, because my laptop is very power hungry (it's a gaming laptop). I guess I could only use my cellphone in the field to save power and control everything with a single long life battery (let's say a 50 amp battery). Thanks!
@StevenMorrisPhotography
@StevenMorrisPhotography 3 года назад
It’s less power hungry than my laptop which is also a gaming laptop however I do feel that my 80amp hour is getting old so in the colder months it does dissipate a little. Overall I would say you could get a good nights imaging done with a 50.
@astrofotoperu
@astrofotoperu 3 года назад
@@StevenMorrisPhotography Thanks! I recently heard that the Eagle had random shut downs (probably related to a power problem, or drivers... who knows...). Does your unit ever shut down unexpectedly in the middle of the night?
@StevenMorrisPhotography
@StevenMorrisPhotography 3 года назад
No I haven’t experienced any shutdown issues, if I did I wouldn’t be happy about the system that’s for sure! I also haven’t used the system yet on a really hot night or a really cold one either so that could contribute to it I guess. Time will tell.

@@StevenMorrisPhotography @@StevenMorrisPhotography Thanks! Based on your experience, I think I'll be buying this unit! Looks amazing and improves cable management. Doing some research, the eagle 4s has a minimum power consumption of 1 amp per hour (of course, by pluggin more stuff, this number will increase), but anything less than 50 amps will make me happy! I think this unit will consume 10 amps/hour with all my gear on. And of course, the best is to control everything from your cellphone or tablet from home! Thank you very much for your help!
