Primary Vertical Tillage Done Right

How do we know if we are running our in-line ripper deep enough for successful vertical tillage? So many failures in vertical till start with the failure to do primary tillage correctly. There is nothing we can do with spring harrows and planter settings to fix the ills of poorly done vertical primary tillage. This video will help you get the foundation of your vertical till program right.

I don't farm, as I unfortunately don't have a farm, I am a very passionate gardener. That being said, I found your video very informative. Always wondered why/how the rippers spaced so far apart would even be practical to work the entire soil area after passing over it. It makes sense thou now, depending upon what crop you have grown, the roots (specially regarding corn) can go 6 feet deep, and who knows how wide they spread to seek water (Usually width of plant, but that varies for plants seeking water). With this method you are using the previous plants roots to assist in breaking up the soil for the next crop. I find that quite ingenious. Why work harder or spend more money when you can have the plants you grew last year do half the work for you? But as you stated, if you are not down far enough to "catch" the root system of the plants between your rippers, you have just wasted all your time, energy and most importantly fuel running across that field for nothing.

One of the main objectives of subsoiling is to break the pan formed by previous operations😊

One of the problem running V-Ripper years ago was too much moisture the soil reducing the shattering of the soil.....we used a V-RIPPER PRIMARILY ON OUR COTTON GROUND the topsoil was 8 to 10 inches deep on top of mostly heavy clay the clay usally didn't get dry enough to subsoil till fall or we did subsoil some fields during summer on fallow ground

After doing the deep ripper, can you disc right after doing ripper or you wait awhile

Great video! Does ripper point have any effect on the depth needed for complete shatter? Example a 7in point on 30in spacing would need to run deeper than a 10in or a 14in point on 30in spacing? Or not?

What is your perspective on narrow points versus wings?
@CropTechInc
@CropTechInc 2 года назад
Adding winged points will require more horsepower if pulling the machine at the same depth as before. The column of soil you are attempting to lift becomes bigger. You may be able to decrease your depth with the addition of wings to lessen the load, but you still need to watch for full lift in between the points. The amount that you could shallow the implement up will be very dependent upon soil types and conditions. When the implement gets too shallow you will see the soil start to shatter almost straight up from the edge of the wings, rather than lifting across the soil profile from point to point.

Can you run a inline ripper to deep
@66forsure

Tyler Felske I believe you want to find the sweet spot where you get vertical shattering and minimal surface trash disturbance. To deep over works your equipment.

If I have grasped the understanding of the concept correctly being a gardener: What you are trying to achieve is to go deep enough to grab enough of the roots from the plants you planted last season that pass between your rippers so that they pull/break up the soil between the rippers themselves. Going too deep will only increase your fuel costs and time it takes to accomplish your goal of breaking up your field. So you need to find the happy medium. Break up the soil evenly across the width of your implement while also saving yourself time, wear & tear, and money spent on fuel. Every field more likely than not will be different, may be different in places in the same field. So if you have to shoot for accomolishing the job with minimal stops/starts for adjusting depth, if the happy medium is 14"- 19" deep but you can do 20" with equipment, might be good to shoot for 17".
