I have been asked about why I lease vs buying my own truck. There's several things to consider for each option.
I've set up an email for questions:

In a nut shell I think it boils down to finding a way to own ur truck so that payments gone then ur supposedly pocketing a lot more money. However, when your paid off truck gets to about 500,000 miles and warranty is out your on the hook for maintenance and sizable repairs. You could budget for those situations but then it becomes a hassle to get your truck in somewhere, down time, ect. While leasing might be more expensive but I guess you’re paying for the convenience to not have to deal with that crap and keeps ur stress down which to me is something of value (new truck, warranty, and help with repairs)
@AM0908
@AM0908 Год назад
That's how I look at it. Ive been in several leases as well as company drivers. I make roughly 25k more a year doing lease op.. I also like nice new things lol... So i hold a truck from a few years then get another. With prime there is a payout for completing a lease so its like a big hunk in my pocket hen too..... If i owned it I'm responsible for all the repairs which an engine replacement would hurt. Whats good about these is they are walk way with no big penalty, sometime you lose a few hundred. So as long as every week im netting more than I was driving company after I set aside taxes I couldn't care less. If the engine blows it goes back. If repairs take longer than a week I send it back, unless that company provides loaner trucks, which some do

Hi John, I will be coming to Prime Tanker Division next month, I have a question, Is there a special dress code for tanker drivers, any special shoes, can you wear shorts. Love your video's THANKS...
@JohnOgren
@JohnOgren 3 года назад
Most customers are pretty laid-back, so t-shirts and shirts are fine. I wouldn't suggest wearing anything you care too much about though, as you WILL get messy. There are a few customers that will require steel toe boots, long pants & shirt sleeves and a hard hat. Some will require a safety vest. Those are the minority.

Outstanding info. ? Do lease ops or company drivers get any aux pay if they have to take tank to washout. Also do tankers have to deadhead if so do they get any additional pay. Also how much deadhead do you average per week. I live in NW Indiana and am thinking about returning to trucking. I am looking at Prime Tanker division. Thanks again for the vids.

$4k a month for repairs? Over the length of what? Over the 4 years you're paying it off? I don't follow the question
@MrChapstick2010
@MrChapstick2010 3 года назад
Over the length of anything, 1yr 2yr 6yr... If your repair costs are less than 4k each month, On Average, you'd be better off having the paid off truck than a lease truck. If you spend abt 4k a month on truck payments, through a lease, you end up trading that when you own. Instead of a lease payment to a bank, youd have to save for maintenance.. you follow?

@@streetscutlass5155 everyone's situation is a bit different. If you're gonna stick with trucking owning the equipment might be the way to go. Just some math, if you take 17,000/ 156weeks (52weeks in a yr ×3) comes out to $109. If you can set aside 109 a week on avg, you'd have 17k after 3 yrs.

I know prime does not hire lease drivers out of California actually no company does now with the laws in California, however on the lease tanker side of prime do you guys ever do runs in the California area? The reason I ask is because I I have family in California and would like to be able to visit but I've never seen a prime tanker in California.

@JohnOgren
@JohnOgren Год назад
Yes, lease ops are responsible for repairs not covered by warranty. You can set up an emergency fund, either a set or variable amount per week, that you can use for anything you need, including repairs. While I have an e-fund, I rarely use it for repairs. Instead I use it for when I take time off. Prime will typically "break up" repair costs into smaller weekly payments with no interest rate.

As a lease operator, you get 71% of the line haul. Do you get a better fuel surcharge since you are burning a lot more fuel due to the way you unload vs. a refrigeratored trailer? You must burn a few gallons in the off-loading process. Thanks and be safe out there.
@JohnOgren
@JohnOgren 2 года назад
Loading & unloading is not figured into the fuel surcharge. Then again, after the first tank, neither is reefer fuel. Probably comes out even in the wash
