All these photos were taken on the Canon 5D mk iv - a full frame camera! Let me know if you’d like me to do the same with crop frame :) Also I’ve made a blog post where you can easily compare each focal length side by side: blog.juliatrotti.com/pictures/24mm-vs-35mm-vs-50mm-vs-85mm-vs-135mm

For portraits, fast 35mm is always in my bag. Very versatile and I only need to set the brightest aperture to have background blur. For wider angle, I would prefer a 16-35 than a 24mm prime. Only if I'm in a field like in the video, I choose tighter lenses to get nicer bokeh. But for many situations, a 35mm with large openings will always be my first to consider. My very favorite.

@@kikipratama1 Hi Rizky, I don't know if you are a pro or a beginner like me but maybe you could give me a little advice. I am about to get my very first camera which is the Canon EOS 80D with the kit lens (18-135mm). My question is though: Is it also good enough for portrait shots with cool bokeh in the background or should I get an additional objective like the Canon 50mm 1.8 for 100 bucks? It would be very nice of you of you could help me out on these matters. Thanks in advance!

@kikipratama1
@kikipratama1 5 лет назад
@@O.G.H. Hi there, 80D is a great all-rounder cameras whether you shoot portraits, sports, and some video. That 50mm 1.8 is everybody's first prime and it's great. Keep in mind that that the bokeh won't be as soft as shown in the video or against a big sensor camera like (6D, 5D, 1D, R, etc.) since you have to step back further and lose your blur. There can be a lot to discuss but if you love JUST portraits and less video, perhaps the old 6D plus that 50/1.8 might wow you more, and you can forget the kit lens for a while since the 50mm will be more versatile on a full sensor.

no, the 50mm on an apsc isnt even near the 85mm on a full frame in terms of bokeh
@TheJudge064
@TheJudge064 5 лет назад
@@martinfont4577 But we're not talking about bokeh, we're talking about the distortion. Besides, the equivalent 2.8 is as low as I usually go with my 85 1.4 anyway, there simply isn't enough in focus in 1.4.

The distortion does not change, 50mm has distortion of 50mm always, which changes in the APSC is only framing: with 50mm in APSC you have the frame of the 85mm, but with the same distortion of the 50mm

Hi Julia! At 02:21 how do you get the entire model's features super sharp even with a shallow DOF? Is it just because of how far you are from the model? I always have these problems when the model starts moving around. :( Also thanks to your videos I finally decided to go for the Canon 5D Mark IV next year and the 35mm as my 1st full-frame! :D

YESSS I hope someone answers this. I’ve been really struggling to get sharpness all the way through at 1.6-1.4!
@juliatrotti
@juliatrotti 5 лет назад
With a 24 and 35 you have a little more leeway with what's in focus at a shallow dof because it's a wider angle lens, it also has to do with the way I'm shooting, I try to shoot for hip height to the model as her head and feet will be at a very similar distance away from my lens leading to everything being in focus. If I were to shoot on the 35 at 1.4 and I was standing up straight and pointing the camera down, her head and torso would be sharp but it would start getting out of focus closer towards her feet because of the angle of my lens/camera. Hope that helps!

@@juliatrotti when you say hip height... your hip height as the photographer or the models? This helped so much and a lot! Ty for always taking the time in answering our questions! Super ty! Oh so that's why it's a different approach on each lens.

Was it the same aperture (f/2 or f/2.8) or did you shoot wide open for each lens? Thanks for the video.
@juliatrotti
@juliatrotti 5 лет назад
I shot at f2 with all the lenses, so the 135mm is the only one that was wide open, but I wanted them all to be shot at the same aperture :)

The 135 is the standout lens here. The 85 is also great but not as good as the 135.

I agree. I own a 35mm 1.4 and 85mm 1.8. I was leaning toward a 50mm next because sometimes I feel like I have to step in too close with the 35 or back up too far with the 85 but the image quality of the 135mm lens is making me rethink everything even though you have to shoot from so far back lol
@ChimaChindaDev
@ChimaChindaDev 5 лет назад
@@stevenquintanilla9795 Haha. We're in a similar situation. I also have the 35 and 85 and for the first time I don't think I need a 50mm. I'm leaning towards the 135 as my next lens. :)

I loveeeee your videos compared to others so much because you make it so simple to understand the differences and being able to see you take the pictures and how close/far you are to the model makes it 1000% easier to understand the comparisons ❤️🥰

Practically the Sigma 56mm f1.4 (almost equivalent to full frame 85mm here) will be your best bet talking about Sony Alpha a6xxx as an example for the price and performance.

With the APSC crop factor, you'd be fairly safe to think of the lenses looking like the next longer focal length. (Focal length) x 1.5 = (APCS cropped equivalent). ie: 24=36, 35=52.5, 50=75, etc. Slightly over simplified but a good starting point on how to think of it.

I believe 24mm and 35mm is not perfect for portrait shoot,it's better for street photography/landscape photography and astro photography...
@darrenchandlercoaching
@darrenchandlercoaching 5 лет назад
I disagree, you need wider lenses for environment portraits and especially when getting full body shots indoors - when you don't have much space. The 24mm might be too wide, but I think the 35mm is just enough.

Thank you Julia! I’ve been waiting for someone to make this video for a long time. It’s the 50mm for me because it’s the closest to replicate what my eyes see. I love being able to reproduce the vision I see before I put my eye to the viewfinder.

How about 24-70/2.8&85 1.4
@PavelR2
@PavelR2 5 лет назад
2.8 vs 1.4 is full 2 stops difference + IQ is not on par between modern 85 and any 24-70. 24-70 is better option only in the situations in which there is no room to use longer FL - studio for example or somebody looks for wide shot. There is still better to use prime for the available BG separation or to get better IQ.
