@@briancarpenter1255 I've used them from every manufacturer for many years...even the defunct ones. None are better than the other. It's just a user preference thing. LEE has two new designs (I like the old original when it comes to LEE) and the new designs (standard and breech lock) are completely different than the original. Lyman and RCBS have been making these for more years (especially Lyman which is our oldest reloading company) than LEE has even existed and either of those versions are designed for feel or hard stop settings whereas LEE's (all three models) are designed for feel only.

I honestly can't get the priming working 100% reliably on that. It crushes primers on 9mm. I tried swaging and reaming the military crimped cases, but I still get about 4-5 every 100 cases. With primer prices these days, I'm resorting back to hand priming to make sure 100% of my primers get seated.
@foonus406
@foonus406 6 месяцев назад
Once set up and dialed in this RCBS ram primer is extremely accurate with repeatable results. Possibly the best tool for the price when it comes to reloading. Replaced the ring on mine with a lock ring to set it in place and use a hard stop setup. HUGE range of adjustability is just one thing that sets this tool apart from others. Compared to the FA hand primer you can seat with much more of a range of adjustment, the primers are set level, and there is no need to rotate the cartridge to try and fix it. Also no visible marring on the primers. Once you get in the swing of it its actually faster than the hand primer with all of the fussing about repressing trying to achieve uniformity. Wish I had found this little guy when i first started reloading years back - it would have saved me a small fortune in the search of reliable, repeatable, and non painful priming methods.

Ugly annealer has one that is similar to the primal cps lite. Uses a primer tube and shuttle system to feed. It also has a micrometer adjustable hard stop for setting primer depth.

I now love my RCBS Ram Primer but I have two comments. First, setting up for priming by hardstop is easiest by just inserting a previously primed casing (assuming that the primer is set to the correct depth) into the shell holder. With the Ram primer unit set well above the proper setting and with the press ram fully raised begin screwing the Ram primer unit down until it seats against the primer. Then set the lock ring and you're done. Secondly, I learned the hard way that if I lowered the press ram all the way down prior to priming some cases (e.g., M1 Carbine) the Ram arm would sometime "scrape" the inside of the Ram primer unit causing the primer to ltierally jump inside the cup. I actually ended up with primers being inserted into some casing either sideways or even upside down! (I never experienced this with large primers but I also have yet to use it on large straight-walled casings.)The simple solution was to simply place a primer in the cup while the press ram is at the top of its stroke, lower the ram just enough for the primer cup to drop below the the top of the shell holder, insert a casing, and then raise the ram press sufficiently to prime the casing. No more bad priming.

.."The simple solution was to simply place a primer in the cup while the press ram is at the top of its stroke, lower the ram just enough for the primer cup to drop below the the top of the shell holder, insert a casing, and then raise the ram press sufficiently to prime the casing." 100%.. this is also your key to maximizing priming speed with this system.

If I've got this right, it appears that all you have achieved is moving the priming operation from the bottom of the press to the top of the press. And, as a bonus, you get to handle the individual primers instead of feeding them via a tube. As a mechanical engineer, we call this "a fix in search of a problem. " And you get to spend more money as well. And you also get to complete the whole operation in more than twice the time. Yeah. That's the ticket.

Thank you for a very informative video. I haven’t handloaded for a long time, but this has me intrigued. It’s been decades since I used (and quickly abandoned) an RCBS press primer, but as I recall it was just a very high leverage prime by feel system that made it easy to apply too much pressure (or too little). I quickly switched to the original Lee Auto Prime devices and although they have the advantage of holding a large number of primers without the need to handle them individually, they had their drawbacks. The hand priming could become tiring after a while (and would probably be much worse for my aged hands these days), and it was still sometimes difficult to judge how much pressure was necessary for consistent results-and which has always been claimed to be important for maximum precision and accuracy. I really like the idea of the “hard stop” method that eliminates the need for judging seating pressure by feel.
@foonus406
@foonus406 6 месяцев назад
Don't want to come across as a know it all - but you can avoid these issues by measuring the thickness of the primer cup and subtracting it from the depth of your primer pockets. Simply set the priming unit so that your cartridge barely slips out when the press is at full cam over and then just creep your die adjustment into your measurement. SAAMI spec will have your somewhere between flush and 0.008 below flush. Once you find it lock the ring and you are set. Like you, my hands have seen better days - I use tweezers to grab the primers and load them into the cup - its easier and you can ditch the gloves because you aren't getting any oils on them that way either. You really can't go wrong with this setup, I've tried several and IMO regardless of the low price point this one is by far the best.

I wish they would make the original one with the round primer pan, just a tad beefier and ergonically comfortable. I like to "feel" my primers seat. I have the Hornady hand primer, one caliber base only. RCBS hand primer too. Better than H's. I have primed 10s of thousand small primers with that Lee.. and 1000s of lips with most brass. Call Lee and tell them. Maybe if they hear enough they will do that. I like the fact I never touch the primer. I have never seen a need to mic the seating depth when I prep the primer pocket amd deburr the flash hole with a precise trimmed case making them as consistant as possible..

I prefer to prime on my Lee press. It especially helps on shell that had a military crimp removed. It provides the leverage to smoothly press those that are a little stiff. I like to use the primer lever to help when seating my bullets. The pressure from under the shell help hold it firm as I place the bullets in place before running in the die.
@wadelandeche8632

That system came with my RCBS BIG MAX press. While didn't use it in the beginning I have used it successfully. One thing that prompted me to try it was priming brass that was previously had crimped in primers that were removed and primer pockets were reamed, but still gave hand primer fits and crushed some primers. Using the Ram Prime setup made for 100% effective priming all of my rifle cases in a very uniform and consistent process.

I started reloading at the age of twelve with supervision from my dad and grandfather until I was 16 then was allowed to run on my own, I am now 62 years old. I had tried many different presses in my twenties but by my late twenties went back to and settled forever on a single stage press for intimate accuracy . I began using this type of setup for priming brass at the onset of my reloading craft and found it the safest and most reliable and accurate

When I was new to reloading I couldn’t get the hang of using the hand primer that came with my press. My Hornady LnL Classic came with a priming arm that primed on the upstroke, but I had modified a B&D Workmate into my load “bench”, and couldn’t get the leverage needed to prime without lifting up the workbench. Subsequently, I purchased the Lyman Ram Prime die…and launched the small primer cup and spring into the ether. Long story short, I never really got into that method, either. I eventually picked up the Hornady Auto Primer attachment for my press, which changed my life…that, and the Frankford Arsenal Perfect Prime and never looked back. I have to say this RCBS ram prime has a much better attachment process for the primer cup.

I use the RCBS universal hand primer tool. It works great for smaller batches of ammo but if I'm doing over 50 cases, my hand gets fatigued. I have the RCBS Rebel without an on press priming option so this could be an option for me but I think it would be better if they designed a way to have an auto primer feed to the die so that you didn't have to manually insert each primer by hand.

@charlesvail2443 7 месяцев назад
Works better than the 'flippy one' that comes with the press and you can adjust the die to fully seat with a hard stop. Easy to set primers in by hand and not as slow as you might think. In 50 years of touching primers I've never had a failure to fire, I don't worry about it. I have several other priming tools and this works best for my purposes.
