I’ve laid with and without primer slurry. Recently had to gun up a path I had laid 7years ago with no primer to make way for a new extension. Slabs were stuck solid. Had to grind the mortar from the back of the slabs on the ones I managed to get up. In the end it wasn’t worth trying to salvage them as was costing more getting the muck off them than buying new. If the mortar bed is wet enough then no need for primer. We don’t see brickies priming there bricks. But like I say I do sometimes use priming slurry if weather is really hot or mortar bed is tight due to laying over existing concrete and keeping 150mm from damp. Think theres pro and cons for both sides. Good informative video 👍

Worth saying, bricks rely a lot on the weight to keep them together. Mortar is deliberately somewhat weak to allow movement, but if you went up to the top of course of bricks on a lot of houses (especially anything slightly old) you'd probably have little difficulty lifting bricks. Plus, as we know, coping stones are forever coming loose!

It’s Not a must on standard natural sandstone or manufactured paving.But it is on Vitrified/ceramic paving due to it being non porous.Yes this product does improve bonding to mortar but not essential.The only thing you need to remember is not to lay the paving in very hot weather otherwise the moisture in the mortar will dry out too quick.And to just use a masonry brush to wet the back of the slabs before laying.Ive been laying slabs for 18 years now trust me.
@GreentopLandscapes
@GreentopLandscapes 4 года назад
Hi Danny, Porcelain does have some porosity, jus check it out. And you are right laying in the heat can have a detrimental effect on the paving but for me a slurry is essential thats just my opinion and I been laying it over 36 years but what do I know I am still learning, be safe

Hi jonnyboy, I have really enjoyed watching your videos its gave me a good insight into what I should be doing and extra confidence in what I've done. I'm laying 20m2 with 22mm raj sandstone slabs,I hit bad ground (compacted clay) as you covered in 1 of your videos so dug down 200-250mm deep to allow the water to get away. My budget is getting very close, I know you recommend easy prime but I have already have some sbr. My question is when you mix your own do you just use sbr and cement to make a soup like consistency or do you add a little water? Also I opted for multicem over standard Portland for the bed, will that be ok for the priming slurry or would it be wise to buy a bag of Portland for the slurry. Thank you, hopefully hear from you soon.
