With the winter rain coming soon, we took advantage of what appeared to be the last nice weekend of the fall to spray some primer on our BMW 2002 project build. Follow along as we prep and primer the shell to keep it protected from rust and corrosion.

I’d like to see what you guys can do with sheet metal. But I bet I’d like it either way.

This is a race car, not a cars and coffee cruiser. Therefore, carbon/fiberglass. However, maybe something new/different than turbo/pigcheek/schnitzer that nearly everyone uses.

We will not have fenders that look like anything else I have ever seen on a 2002. They will have aspects that resemble some aspects of all 3 you mentioned. It will NOT be a rocket bunny look. I can promise you that. -Joe

Mini tub it and tuck them under.

Unfortunately, the subframes we are using are too wide to tuck the tires, so we're going to have to flare it

Wide tires on a lightweight car do not help near as much as folks like to think- in fact can actually hinder performance in a couple of areas- traction only being one. I would double check your intended use/ race league vs how quickly those tires will heat up to become "sticky" under normal race conditions. Wide tires are hell on the forearms 100 times more so without power steering. it is a race car, right? make the fenders out of something cheap and easily replaceable with minimal effort. At least with fiberglass a mold can be made for duplicates. I actually like sheet metal better but what is the most practical for the cars intended use?

Great questions. I agree with replacement and molds. Our tire choice is based on the requirements of leagues we plan to run in (most are treadwear-only restrictions). We can run narrower wheels if needed. Where did you learn about wide tires harming traction? I have to agree that it would be a huge waste (and an inertia brake) if you didn't have the force to control them (power steering, rigidity, brakes, damping, and power delivery). We have all 5 of these things considered in our design (We will have PS). I understand we haven't "laid down the cards" on that... so nobody would ever know (or believe us) at this point. And yes, I know I have (much to reader's dismay) an average of 1 set of parenthesis per sentence in this reply! -Joe

@RogueFabrication I am a mechanical engineer- now a super small custom car manufacturer but school is where I think I "really" took it to heart and understood it by the books. Back in the day before college when I was doing offroad stuff I noticed those darn Camel Trophy guys usually had skinny little tires compared to the other 4x4ers and it sure had me wondering. My Super Stalker (can see in my videos) is only 1680 pounds but has ~400 horses and no power steering YET. The tires on it I believe are too wide for optimum performance on autocross- the aspect looks damn good at shows and going down the street in town though. lol. Autocross races run approximately 60-120seconds and not near enough time to heat my tires up- doing burn outs only helps the rear- also less than ideal. Indy cars work with wide tires because of the massive wing down force that make them "appear" heavier and their races are MUCH longer. Love your project and your tools! keep it up !
