The only thing I can say about back rolling is that it will smoosh into the nooks and crannies in the drywall texture where as spraying it’ll stay on top of it may leave a little pinholes you’d have to spray pretty heavy. I’ve done it too late before and showed up spray lines after the finish so I always go heavy and back roll now

Just a thought, if you back roll the primer you don't have to dust unless its excessive ( i use a 24 inch floor broom). If the primer is too thick i cut the primer 10% with water. I always back roll the primer :) Different strokes for different folks :)

If I'm correct, the mopping was done BEFORE he sprayed the PVA primer in another video... Where he showed prepping the walls before priming.. He mentioned that he mopped the walls because they were smooth and didn't have any texture on them... and they were sanded... not sure why he included that insert with this video..

I've been doing new construction for DR Horton, lennar, and mungo, we always backroll for one reason, repairs. The drywall is fuzzy after sanding, so primer helps smooth out walls. Backroll will let it penetrate into the mud so that when it gets repaired later, it won't look fuzzy again

so I read some of the comments about back rolling so I thought I would put in my 2 cents from being a painter almost 20 years... yes you can just spray the primer, yes you can just spray the paint finish too, but.... primer won't seal as good just sprayed also depending on your primer it might flash spray strokes.. same with paint gonna look real 'sprayee' if you just spray the finish not to mention in most cases it will touch up like crap. some flats will touch up fine but anytime you take a roller to a sprayed finish to touch up your pretty much gonna see it. He's using a pva so those usually are very dead flat & will not flash at all. He's also doing high production work & a lot of painters will just spray everything on new construction, primer, then flat on all the walls & ceilings. Why because it's quick & you have to make $ & sometimes there's multiple homes after one another but its not the best way to apply. If you spray & backroll all your primer in it will feel like a job well done & be noticeably more solid I can guarantee that, then spray & back roll your finish paint & you'll be looking like a real painter that cares more about quality then $. That's just my experience with it

Chris are you able to spray the topcoat without back rolling or do you roll the final coat? I just primed drywall (sprayed) and sprayed the first coat eggshell and it looked a little streaki so I just rolled the final coat eggshell and it is way better finish streak wise at least ... but still not perfect or is that just the way it is that you can’t get glossy paints to be streak free? Is there always a little bit of a unevenness ?

Usually people don’t want to spend that much money on paint so they aren’t looking for something like a heavy done coat but of course you want to hit everything and not leave it light enough when you can see the difference color between the paint and drywall

Getting ready to paint one of our bedrooms at our house. The ceiling paint was peeling so we stripped it bare, down to the plaster. What kind/type of primer and paint do you recommend so this does not happen again. I'm also gonna put texture on the ceiling and the walls, do i put the texture on before or after primer? We also stripped wallpaper off the walls with a product called "Worlds Best Wallpaper Stripper" from Home Depot. Is there anything else I should do to the walls. I purchased a Graco airless with a 515 to primer/paint and bought a Hopper Gun as well to do the job (never used either before, but from watching your video's I think I'll be okay using them). Old Timer on new drywall and any repairs you have to prime separately to prevent uneven drying which will cause flashing.
@vanessaglaze2996

I have talked to several painters and paint sales people and they have all said 2 things; 1. If it is new drywall use primer first then paint. 2. All the primer+paint is is just extra thick paint. No primer at all. I'm in the middle of painting the whole inside of my renovated house and have been learning a lot.
@smithsfan425
@smithsfan425 5 лет назад
In reality no paint has “primer” in it. It’s a marketing gimmick to be honest. There is literally no guideline to what makes a paint a “paint with primer”. When a paint is labeled as that though, what it means is that it has a somewhat higher level of volume solids (pigment among other things) which helps it cover better and sometimes at a thicker millage (thickness of paint film on the wall). High quality primers are generally acrylic latex which gives excellent adhesion properties. Some “paint+primers” are acrylic vinyl which means it will dry fairly quickly but the adhesion and durability properties won’t be there. So personally, it’s a case by case basis. But if it’s new drywall, definitely use a PVA primer first.

In other videos he has said yes, but in this house he didn't. Just woke up on a different side of the bed this day i guess.

Good video, thanks for posting it. I am wondering about the value in rolling the paint after spraying, would that be better for rolling any remaining dust into the paint?

Please give me advice on this: A contractor spray painted (one coat of Paint/primer in one EasyCare brand ultra premium) on my new construction drywall ceiling without cleaning the dust and he left without a trace. I am now trying to finish the paint job. I'm afraid without cleaning the dust and not apply a PVA primer the way that you show here, the paint will not bond properly. Please recommend what I should do next? Thank you.

There's really usually not a lot of dust on the ceiling (gravity). So nothing to worry about.

Chris here in KY homeowners like textured ceilings when building new homes. I'm about to paint a new home with exactly that, textured ceilings. I want to prime the walls while spraying. Obviously at this point of the process no carpet, trim or hardwood floors are down, so no worries getting any over spray on them. However, I have to ensure the ceilings do NOT get any paint on them when spraying the walls with primer. What process/procedure do you use to ensure the ceilings are not affected? Do you simply use 9" paper with 3" tape to catch any potential paint over over spray from getting on the ceilings?

What he said! (Stew). Also, it would help alot if you're arm angle was straight at the wall up there at 8', so think about wearing either some platform shoes.

Why do you use pva and not just a thin coat of paint? We don't use pva on the walls here in the UK. Is it hot where you are? I'm finding your videos really interesting Chris. You do things so differently to how we do. I've already picked a few interesting tips up. You never know it all, eh?

I have a question? When you guys prime the walls ( spray or roll ) you guys prime it in white color or you guys mix it with the final color?
