A lot of Primus lyrics are much more serious than they seem. It’s easy to lose them behind the great riffs and psychedelic visuals. Many layers to this band.
For sure, Last Salmon Man is a great example. What a stupid title, but it's this super sad song about a guy watching his family livelihood disolve. Les is great at sucking you in with the silly shit then hitting you with something powerful.
The Antipop album gets more flack than it should. I think it may have to do with the production though, IMO it's an early sufferer of the "loudness war"
No one can say that less claypool isn't anything less than one of the most inventive, technically brilliant and unbelievably creative bass players to ever have lived, he is simply amazing.
Just want to clarify that while indeed Les has been doing his own solo/side projects for years and still today, PRIMUS is still VERY active. I've seen them 9 times between 2010 and 2019. Twice in one year a couple times. Their most recent album came out in 2017. They just finished a big tour with Slayer. SEE THEM IF YOU GET THE CHANCE! My first show changed my life.
Fun fact about the hallucination part, the transitions to the other scenes are actually from past Primus Music Videos! For exampls, the cheese scenes are from Jerry Was A Racecar Driver and the black and white cartoon is from Tommy the Cat
Sea of Cheese: Jerry was a Racecar Driver Cartoon cats: Tommy the cat Creepy pig head: My name is Mud Fat guy in a red suit: Southbound Pachyderm Cowboys: Big Brown Beaver
"American Life" and "Over the Electric Grapevine" are great! "Professor Nutbutters House of Treats" is another great one and early Primus "Sausage - Riddles are Abound Tonight" please! Soooo goooood!!
@@RobinHobben dude, YES!! There's just so many! One of my personal favorite is a video of "Sgt Baker" live performed by old Primus ( Primate ) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-PM5I5oo1yKI.html Studio or live, Primus sucks!
I'm a huge fan of Primus, and I've heard alot of their songs and I'm here to give you some of my recommendations for a possible future video, Sgt. Baker is a really good song, Hamburger Train is the perfect song if you enjoy the Bass cuz it's like 8 straight minutes of pure bass, Riddles are Abound Tonight by Sausage but it's pretty much the same group. I heavily recommend these songs
I have been watching your reactions to Primus all night. Thanks you so much for doing all of these! I remember going to see early Primus shows in SF in the mid 80's...
I'm am really digging that you're on a PRIMUS rampage. Yes, react to Too Many Puppies. BUT, if you would, PLEASE react to TRAGEDY's A' COMIN' --- You'll LOVE it.
Dude notice the reason this music just the music impacts you. It sounds like a train and you want to move, push forward. Then the bass is mind boggling then pay attention to the lirycs and your mind is blown. I'm about to watch shake hands and I'm so excited to see your impression!
If you enjoyed this one I think you should check out Jilly's On Smack from the Green Naugahyde album. It's outside the box even for Primus. Les really branches out and gets some trippy sounds out of a bowed upright bass. Their newer albums are sadly overlooked and underrated, but they've still got it. Love watching you react to this band, keep it up!
Just today i bumped into your channel when i was searching for Primus songs and man, you are one entertaining guy and you put smile on my face (recently been having really tough time mentally) so thank you for that and i love your passion for music, it shows! You definitely earned my sub :) Already have watched your reactions from multiple bands like Alice in Chains and Deftones. Continue to do what you do and don't change anything! Greetings from Finland!
I fell in love with primus in 94' and havent looked back. I'm glad you're finally having a listen. Hes telling a story about a dude addicted huffing fumes.
This tune struck a very heavy chord in me-----I knew a guy in school years ago who died from huffing gasoline..... I fall in love w/Primus more and more as I continue to discover what they were all about... Jamel's reviews are what got me turned on to these awesomely nutty guys..........
Jamel... for some fairly recent Primus may I suggest Jilly's on Smack? I also agree that an oldie but goodie.. Too Many Puppiesand/or To Defy The Laws Of Tradition are a MUST!!! I saw your reactions to the songs from Pink Floyd's "Animals" album... given that you clearly dig Claypool, and you dig Floyd... you need to check out a side Project called Colonel Les Claypool's Fearless Flying Frog Brigade. Check out Live Frogs [Set 2]. They play the whole Pink Floyd "Animals" album live from start to finish and it's FLAT OUT AMAZING!!!!! Floyd isn't easy to cover and they just ABSOLUTELY CRUUUUUSSSSSHHH IT! 💯🐸🤘🎸🥁🎹🎵
Hey Jamel, Wonderful how a man from LA gets this middle aged reference man from the other side of the planet back to his favourite band from his teenage years. Thanx man!
I love watching you learn about primus. Mr. Claypool has been solo for a while and has a lot of tons with his other solo music too, I like all his songs so much, brother
Folks who say not to worry about the lyrics should be ignored. Les has one of the greatest comic voices in all of music. He is even a novelist! Absolutely hilarious!
Love your run on Primus. There are some great live performances out there as well showcasing a different aspect of Primus' catalog. Bonnaroo 2011 "American Life" and "Jilly's on Smack". Or, if you want a serious shock to the cerebellum, try digging into the extensive works of Les Claypool's side projects such as Oysterhead. Colonel Claypool's Bucket of Bernie Brains, and also Colonel Claypool's Frog Brigade. So much fun. You should also try Buckethead. He doesn't have very many produced videos but the ones he has are baffling yet very heavy.
Greetings from northern Europe Jamal! I've been stalking your channel for a few days. And it has been an absolute pleasure my friend! You are entertaining, philosophical and diplomatic with your reviews, and I am having a good time going through them and listening to your comments. Especially your Primus reviews (funny as ****** hell). As a rock/punk/metal ex-musician through 20 years , I've meet many a bass player who praised this band. And my immediate impression in the past was always that it was organized noise, but not very clever or catchy in general (damn they suck!). Watching your reviews mr. Jamal, I've been compelled to reevaluate my previous conceptions of this music. And I am beginning to understand some of the charms; the bass technique (wow, slap!, WOW!) and the delivery of the message (always with attempted humor). So, I appreciate your reviews, and I am beginning to understand the perspective of some of the bass players I've had the opportunity to jam with. Thank you Mr. Jamal, keep em coming. Note: By the way. If you do take requests, I would love to hear your opinion of a track I discovered recently. Now this is underground, but features one of the best bass players i've heard in modern times, Mr Victor Wooten. He is usually not a rock/metal artist but does a pretty neat job doing so. Track: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_z-ZrQPfY5o.html / Octavision : Three Lives Hope you enjoy.
Old video, but here's a new comment: Primus is easily one of THE bands ever. Helped me through one of the toughest parts of my 40 year old life, and I started to listen to the lyrics. They're more than they seem. They also tought me to really love and appreciate slap bass music ^_^ One of the reasons I actually pursued my old interest in playing the bass as well ^_^
first seen primus on bill and ted's when i was a kid and didn't know it, then i played tony hawk at 13 and heard 'jerry was a racecar driver' and sounded like some crazed jazzy lounge singer, then i bought 'seas of cheese' which is a 10/10 album and one of my all time favorites
One thing that can help understand where Primus found influences is to check out the underground San Francisco group of artists called The Residents. Have a look at their ‘One Minute Movies’ here on YT. You’ll see the connection...
Damian Kirkwood There are some Residents tracks that sound like Les is singing but of course pinning down who is actually a member of the band is mysterious...
If you're enjoying Primus so far, you might wanna give Ween a try. Definitely not the same type of music, but the same realm of "weird", and both bands are friendly with each other.
Shake hands with beef in repeat!?!? You are the man! I went to see U2 live once with some friends who'd invited me....i went only to see Primus who was opening for them!!!!! Lol 😆
Thanks man..I feel vindicated now.... Who got the funk now....😝 I was listening to this as a late teen/young adult in the 90s when it was new... Time for some sublime covering Bob Marley... Smoke 2 joints at night
Those Damn Blue Collar Tweekers, American Life, Here Come The Bastards are some good shit...Les Claypool's Frog Brigade does a live cover of the ENTIRE Pink Floyd "Animals" album and it's amazing. I know you're inundated with suggestions, but you really can't go wrong with Les Claypool stuff..."Sausage" is another great project of his.
I've left a few comments but haven't suggested a song. This is my favorite band, I can tell you like the funk aspect of Primus but if I may, a three-piece band that produces huge sound is referred to as a "Power Trio." While Primus is a very funky trio, they are also a very POWERFUL trio. That raw, brutal power is never more evident than on the song Over The Electric Grapevine. I can't think of another trio anywhere, not hendrix, not cream, not OG grand funk railroad--no one matches the power they achieve in that song. Give it a try?
@Brian Weber Let me specify. At the time Les was coming up, meth was a hardcore epidemic in Cali, and his dad didn't want him getting caught up in the Meth life. Hence, songs like Harold of the Rocks ... I'm sure they've done their share of other drugs, but, those other drugs are not the same as meth, and that's coming from someone who was in Cali and addicted to meth at age 12, and has done almost every other drug I could get my hands on
@Brian Weber Yeah, I grew up around heroine junkies, and that shit always scared me more than anything else. Never touched it. I've tried other things, but, I'm a huge weed supporter. It's helped me immensely in my life.
@Brian Weber same here ... If I hadn't left Cali at age 14 and moved to Ohio to live with my dad, I would've been dead or in prison, it was that bad. I'm so glad I came here and raised a family here. My kids don't know a lot of the struggle I had to survive through
@Brian Weber LOL same .. always down for some real convos with strangers though. I debate myself all the time on how much of my past to tell my kids. They know some, but, not all by any means. Peace to you and yours as well
Pretty damn addicting?? For real man, you gotta have yourself, not just a Primus day, but a Les Claypool day! May I recommend from his extensive catalogue: Les Claypool - One Better The Claypool Lennon Delerium - Mr. Wright Oysterhead - Mr. Oysterhead Duo De Twang - Stayin' Alive Primus - Harold Of The Rocks The Les Claypool Frog Brigade - Ding Dong
If you want more Primus start with the entire Frizzle fry album you cannot go wrong with a single song. And if you want to song 4 review Jilly's on smack off of the green naugahyde album wish I also highly recommend has probably my second favorite behind Frizzle fry unless you just want some old live tracks throw-in suck on this :) keep it up man love the videos!
I knew (not going to mention names) of 2 people in the 70's who worked for a cleaning service. They used high powered buffers with a buffing laquer. Once in awhile they would take the left over laquer and poor it in a bathtub and lean over it on their knees and huff for about a half hr. They said they were entering LAQUER LAND! True story!
One of the things i love about Primus. Besides the musicianship and nasty feel. Their songs are stories about characters. Not love songs. Not emo. Just stories
Well, Southbound Pachyderm is about the Global warming, De anza Jig is about Les' studying years on De anza College. I know that you are talking about most of them, but this is just a little more cherry on the cake.
The Seven next. Their new album is less then 2 years old and amazing. Like rush 2112, pink floyd the wall, and queensryche operation mindcrime its a story. Maybe you could do a "music that tells a story series" you've already done 2112.
Not gonna lie bruh, but it was kinda beautiful watching you become a fan over a few videos. Primus truly sUx! Les Claypool is the reason I picked up a bass! He’s got mad other side projects that you’d probably dig too.
Les claypool for president 2020!!!funny my son has a sticker he's had it since 97 I think says les claypool for president he's actually got to play for les claypool before got very lucky if I didn't see it I wouldn't believe it and he got the playlist claypool's base and Les claypool told him at the age when14 at time Les said to him brother by the time you're my age I'm going to be out of a job well my son is now 31 years old and he plays bass for cirque du soleil in las Vegas that he still sees him every time they're on tour and he still plays the base just like Les claypool pretty amazing started when he was four or five years old!🖤🖤🖤
