Real spill straight from the horses mouth: “A buddy of mine was a vegetarian” says Claypool. “Whenever he would fall off the wagon, he would say, ‘Oh, I’m going to go shake hands with beef.’ So it sort of became this metaphor for deviating from the norm.”
This song is a masterpiece. The bass, drums, guitars, the groove, everything. Actually, everything from "The Brown Album" is fantastic, it's one of my top albums from Primus.
Primus is so unique that back at the beginning of the MP3 the people who were in charge of the ID3 data tagging format, with categories for song name, artist, track number, genre, etc., decided that “Primus” would be one of the genre categories along with rock, country, pop, blues, and the rest. “Primus” was an official genre selection, because they didn’t fit into any other. Hehe
This is the perfect time to check out Buckethead . I see Brian " brain " Mantia is the drummer in this video who also played with Buckethead in the group Praxis with Bootsy Collins and introduced Les Claypool to Buckethead also also had a band called Colonel Claypool's Bucket of Bernie Brains. Long story short Brain is an awesome drummer, check out some Buckethead homeboy!
When you said “where the hell have I been” I feel so bad, glad people are giving these bands a try and enjoying them. Liking hip hop and all that is fine but I feel like most people have a very narrow understanding of how much variety rock has until they’ve heard some of it. Then they’re like damn I didn’t know music this complex or creative or weird or chill, even existed. Seeing people get into tool, primus, Pink Floyd, rush, zeppelin, and be like damn this shits good why have I never heard of these people, really shows how people need to be more open minded about rock music, it’s not all depressing, fast down strumming with screaming vocals, it can be funny, and chill, and deep, or just fun and interesting.
Same here! Probably won't ever have a child of my own but I would introduce them to all my music from when I was growing up. I love sharing, especially something you enjoy that makes someone happy.
Your well spoken observations on Primus these past few weeks on their utterly unique sound and creativity earned a sub from me. Keep up the great content!
I dunno bud, I feel like that's one of their less accessible songs.. took me a while to get into that. Brown Album was my first Primus album and Shake Hands with Beef grabs you by the balls! (I like Southbound Pachyderm now, but it took me a few listens)
If you do Southbound Pachyderm, I recommend the official video. It’s brilliant claymation Primus weirdness. Also check out the official video of their cover of Devil Went Down To Georgia for more of the same. :)
This album dropped when I was in highschool, I remember our art teacher coming into class one Monday morning and saying, do you guys know Primus, they have the best song on MTV right now! Yes Indeed, yes sir... This was the song...
@nynetynyne heeee heeeee, I was learning drums at the time, we were all into Primus and Mr bungle, one afternoon during lunch hour at school we were allowed to play in the music room, but decided to lock ourselves in and just jam, so when lunch was over and school resumed we didn't give a flying fuck, we just turned everything up and continued, they were banging on the doors, but we thought, let's give our high school a free show, blazing loud, and they simply couldn't stop us, it was so beautiful and nasty and loud, we knew we would get in trouble eventually but pleaded, "ohh we didn't know, we were in the groove, in the moment, huh and the whole fucking school had to hear us trying to play Primus songs, I still laugh till this day....who? Us? We didn't know! Huh haaaaa
Jemel,I'm so happy you brought Primus back to me...I loved them yrs ago but then life happened & I hadn't heard them in many many years.......Kids moved out & now I'm loving getting my music back.....Love Primus!!!!
Always feels like a genuine reaction, great stuff. You could rinse the life from that album whilst discovering some amazing stuff at the same time. There’s about 8 tracks on thar Brown album that couldn’t fail to get those shoulders moving. Kalamazoo, Dutches and the Proverbial, The chastising of Renegade and Golden boy are personal faves that are well worth a listen, here or on your headphones during the night shift. Keep em coming
@3:57 Truth! Nobody does it like Primus does!! Lots of people hate them because they just don't understand. Having an open mind is good for you. They'd understand if they were musicians.
Southbound Pachyderm is a staple of Les and his ability. He encores with it at every show now from Primus to the Delirium. One of the rare songs of Primus that Les can stretch his improv legs. I have been seeing Primus since Sailing the Seas and I am glad he decided to branch out more to grow as an artist.
I believe the song was written about a friend of Claypool's that would try to stick to vegetarianism but would occaisionally fall off the wagon and "shake hands with beef" was his metaphor for sneaking out for a burger.
This album features new drummer Bryan "Brain" Mantia, whose style was more funky and hip-hop related. Great drummer who could shred the nar-nar rad! Check out Colonel Claypool's Bucket of Bernie Brains. A Les side project of him, Buckethead, Bryan and Bernie Worrel of Parliament-Funkadelic fame on keyboards.
I'm so enjoying this journey with you, young man. You have great taste and your followers have made some great suggestions. It might be time for Gojira...either Born in Winter or Heaviest Matter of the Universe (preferably both). I love them so much I drove 5 hours to see them in concert in St Louis all by my old ass self. LOL
Love your vids bro... Gotta do Fishbone! Les (bassist from Primus) has said that Fishbone was the band everyone was in awe of back in the day. "Fight the youth" would be a mind blowing introduction to them...
more Primus greatness: Kalamazoo Bob's party time lounge Professor nut butter's house of treats Mr. Know it all Pudding time Fish on Sgt. Baker To Defy the laws of tradition Southbound pachederm Is it Luck Just to name a few. Also Les Claypool has like 10 side projects. Sausage and Holy Mackerel are a couple of goodens
If you want to understand Primus, I would suggest you listen to Don't Eat The Yellow Snow and Nanook Rubs It by Frank Zappa. I often say, Primus picked up where Frank left off.
If I remember correctly, Claypool did once said it was about a friend of his who is vegetarian, but will occasionally dable into eating meat, hence "he shakes hands with beef every now or then".
Subbed specifically bc of your Primus videos. Been a fan for a long time, seen them live 9 times, they are STILL at the top of their game, a completely untouchable and unique band. If you think their music videos are good, you should go see them live, it is a true experience. Les Claypool is truly an American Legend. Everyone should be exposed to Primus at some point.
Less Claypool had a vegetarian friend who would eat meat on occasion. "Shake hands with beef" became an inside metaphor for doing something you normally wouldn't.
Whoa - ever so RANDOMLY I listened to this song last night (first time in like 7 years - the odds of you reacting to this is MIND BOGGLING 💜🎶🖤 your reactions
There’s some Coolio vibes going on with the cinematography. They pantomimed to a slowed down track and then sped the footage up in post to the proper tempo of the song, giving them that insect-like jerky motion
Les Claypool is a bass master.. He will slap the life out of a bass guitar.. Mr krinkle is a good tune, and Les gives it large on a chello.. Lovin your reactions to these bands i know and love.. I subscribed to your channel last night and havnt stopped watchin since.. Rock on!!! 🤘🤘
Indeed, there's no other band which sounds like Primus BUT Primus did get some of their sound from other bands, the most obvious being King Crimson. You should look up their song "Elephant Talk" to truly hear the influence King Crimson had on Primus. Look up the live version they did on "Fridays" you won't believe years and eyes when you see what those cats did.
I was fortunate enough to see Les Claypool cover Pink Floyd's Animals in Portland some years back, I think you can find it on youtube (or similar concerts), you should check it out.
Funky beef! I just read that Neil Peart, Rush's legendary drummer, has died at 67 of brain cancer. Can we have a reaction to some Rush as a tribute, please?
Dig the Honey I shrunk the Kids reference. I was right there with you! You ought to check out the other projects that feature Les Claypool. The band Colonel Claypool’s Bucket of Bernie Brains is a super group. Brain is the drummer for this Primus album, and the drummer the group I’m mentioning. Of course Les is on bass and vocals. Bernie Worrell(keyboard player for Parliament Funkadelic) plays keyboard and organ. Lastly, one of the greatest guitar players in the world, Buckethead, is on guitar. So you can see where the name of the band comes from.... Les Claypool, Buckethead, Bernie Worrell, Brain= Colonel Claypool’s Bucket of Bernie Brains. I will suggest two tracks.... one is an instrumental, the other has lyrics. The instrumental is called Scott Taylor. The one with lyrics is called Junior, and it is about George Bush Jr. during his presidency.
For a different, but still unique, side of Les Claypool, try his newest band The Claypool Lennon Delirium. A good song to start with is "Oxycontin Girl" or "Breath of a Salesman" from their first album.
First concert I got to go alone with a friend to was Primus and Helmet in 1995 at the Hornet Training Center in Charlotte, NC. Seen them/Les/The Frog Brigade so many times since then I can't even count, even went to the Willy Wonka tour. Definitely a good show every time. Im really into the fact that you're getting into them. A very underrated band, Les is primo when it comes to bass. 🎸 Primus sucks!!
Check out Oysterhead if the bass player from Primus the drummer from the Police and the guitar player in lead singer from Phish. Very unique and also very good.
You should check out bassist/vocalist side band Colonel claypools bucket of Bernie brain's. The big eye ball in the sky or the tyranny of the hunt. It gets funky as all hell!
It feels like one of the last rock genres you haven't kinda touched yet is the main stream-pop 80's hair metal - Motley Crue, Ratt, Ozzy Osbourne, Guns n' Roses, Bon Jovi, etc =)
