I once read a Charlie Daniels interview about this song. He basically says that if you list close, the Devil's music is all flash but no substance , but Johnny is playing musically complex licks. Listened to this song for years before I read than and now I can't unhear how much of a mess the Devil parts really are.
Really-the Devil's got nothin' compared to Johnny. (FWIW, I always considered Charlie Daniel's Johnny to be a cousin of Chuck Berry's Johnnie B Goode. Both of them kickass players!)

There's a real legend about a blues guitarist in the 30's that is said to have sold his soul to the devil for real. He couldn't play the guitar at all an people were mean to him and mocked him when he tried. One day he was just gone. After a couple of months he showed up again and played the guitar like no one else. He made some success and recorded a record that has become legendary today and influenced blues and rock music a lot. But he died just a year after he came back that day at the age of 27. His name was Robert Johnson.
Now that's storytelling in music form. Charlie Daniels' lyrics are so expressive that someone could actually make 'a short' just from the lyrics, alone. Now that's what I call writing!

Real curious to see your reaction to the Pretty Reckless' "Take Me Down." Similar thematically and they're an awesome group. Definitely a modern rock group, but they take a lot of influence from very old timey blues like Robert Johnson

I'd suggest that if there isn't a specific version mentioned than any version should give a good reaction. You've been at this long enough to figure out what might be best option out of a few choices. I actually prefer to initially listing to HD copy of studio for best sound, but I realize that with sed one bands having lyrics handy helps with digestion. I prefer to listen to live versions after, because than the variations of a live performance have more impact. But my point is, that if you get a request where it is just artist/ song title, then it doesn't matter which video you choose, because your best judgment is enough. If someone comes across a specific video. Than yeah, they should provide the link. But I feel like most of your subs are happy with your choices, and have trust that sooner or later you'll get around to it.
