@@donatodiniccolodibettobardi842 I think the point, as seen in other children's stories, is that the more we grow up the harder it is to accept the whimsical fantasy of places like Narnia as "logic" clouds our ability (for most of us anyway) to imagine. If I may point to the Bible, Jesus does say that we should come to God like a child, open to believing and accepting without cynicism. As a Christian allegory/inspired story and in usual kids story fashion that could be why Peter and Susan are deemed too old by the end.

Truth be told the whole thing would probaly be a lot more heartwarming and hit less hard if you know... The last battle and Susan being let out of Aslan's kingdom. "It's good to grow up and leave children storries behnd ... but don't row up into a hussy who likes long hairs and parties !" yeah,yeah I doubt Lewis had any idea of what he would writte must later when he was writing Prince Caspain. And I'm aware the sexism and moralism is nothing nothing exceptionnal for the times but it still hits a bit different for a modern reader, y'know ?

@@s.m.2523 Susan's story wasn't that. It was actually that Susan drifted from the 'faith', so to speak, which CS Lewis himself did in his own life. And then he came back to it. CS Lewis confirmed that Susan would too, but that such a book would be more grown up than what he'd want to write, so he encouraged others to write their own ideas of how it would go.

Pretty sure I read a fanfic about how Susan deals with the deaths of her parents and siblings in a train crash (in The Last Battle).

Lewis was too immature to understand that you can't outgrow something you enjoy.

It also demonstrates that despite the redemption there can be blessings (whether it be things or events) that one misses out. This doesn't detract the redemption arc itself, but it does show that one can miss out when they put themselves and their selfish desires above others.

@@kendraressler4497 that's why Edmund and ustice are my favorite characters due to their redemption. It made them both better people in the end. As you learn more from your mistakes.

Honestly, Edmund is pretty much the best character out of the kids. I wish they'd leaned in more to the implication that he was the one who had to do the most growing up. The White Witch summoning scene is the highlight of the movie.

One thing I loved about this movie was the incorporation of Edmund's interest in aerial battles and The Blitz into the Narnian battle using gryphons.

I was 16 when this movie came out and I have still not quite gotten over the massive crush on Ben Barnes that it caused, so I just cannot take any issue with the casting.

Not having read the books when I first saw it, I always assumed Caspian was like 17-19. Never knew Barnes was fucking 26 at the time. Lol. But I'm pretty sure late teens-looking Caspian is what they were shooting for rather than having him be a full adult.

@@ralphjb Yes, I think that is what they meant because if the kiss happened between a teen and an adult would be a bit of a problem (Anna Popplewelll was 20 and Ben Barnes was 27 by the film release). Which makes his inexperience and naivety at the start understandable. I think Dom thought that the actors’ age was same as the characters, but Hollywood always casts actors who are older than teenagers, so... I don’t know why he didn’t think that.

Oh yeah. I watched themovie so many times just for him. In all honesty, I even threw a bit of shade on dawn treader because he had a beard and I didn't like that. He also had this kind of spanish-esque accent, at least in the German dub which I found attractive but mostly disappeared in the next film

I was very attracted to both Ben Barnes and the actress who plays Susan as a teen, so them making awkward eye contact was just my jam

Edmund was always my favorite too, same reason.

I just love him because he had actual character growth. His is the only one that actually seems to grow in any meaningful way.

I'm writing a comic, and I named one of the characters after Edmund because he was meant to kinda suck. But now he's become the main protagonist and he's a sweet baby precious cinnamon roll, so vicariously I am also a fan of Edmund from Narnia now.

To be fair 10 minutes into a completely new world is not nearly enough to work out who's right and who's wrong in a local conflict. People can't manage to do that for real countries for years. So I never really got it why it was considered a treason in the first place. He was thrown into a new world, met a seemingly nice person, was promised a crown and joined her side immediately, EXACTLY the same thing the other children did.

Even though in my country the age of consent is 15 - so I'm not prudish about teenagers being sexually active - I still think it should be only btween people who are close to each other in age, not a full adult and a teenager. There's a huge difference between a 16/20 relationship and a 16/40. O_O As for the "changing the body" part, that's just a requirement for actors and actresses in general. Sometimes they need to gain muscles, somethimes they need to gain fat, and sometimes they need to starve themselves. Just yesterday, I watched "Dallas Buyers Club" and I'm still kinda shook about how skeletal both Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto looked.

@@Eris_Norregard You're right that it's the industry expectation, and it's one that when people say the expectation should be changed, I agree with them. (Obviously I have no power there, personally, so my support helps no one but you know) We applaud the drastic ways people change their bodies for a role, and it is impressive, but it's also dangerous in a way that feels not worth it. Starving and dehydrating yourself so your muscle definition or your ribcage shows up on camera or whatever the role calls for, it's just as bad to me as pop idols who forgo sleep until they pass out from exhaustion on stage and do drugs just to stay awake. I'd rather actors with muscles less rippling and actresses with bigger waistlines and pop stars hitting fewer cities on tour than any of these people accidentally ending up dead or permanently disabled for it, you know? The shorter version: I think it's taken too far. but yeeahhhh more to to Twilight specific point, it was already weird that these 40-year-old moms were into what we all assumed was a 20-year-old playing a teenager. Then you find out he was a teenager playing a teenager, and suddenly it's police sirens in my brain. And that being what the movie was AIMING for, thus intentionally putting a teen boy in this super sexualized weird position, is gross and irresponsible. P.S. what country are you from?

Honestly, I have a deeper appreciation and passion for fairytales (and stories in general) now as an adult than I did as a child. Heck, stories were used as a method for me to better understand Jesus and The Bible. When you look at the Bible as one big story (or series with multiple seasons) God as the world builder and what would happen if the characters were given free rage to shape things and what would happen if someone else corrupted these creations, severing the connection between them and the Author, who does everything He can to reconnect with His creations/children.

Hmm, you might want to check out The Magicians then (I prefer the TV version, but the books are moderately popular). Basically it's a deconstruction of a lot of Narnia-flavored children's fantasy tropes that goes from dark&edgy to almost ludicrously grimdark in places. The TV show makes the chars grad-school aged and more of an ensemble, relative to the books' college-age protagonist(s), which adds some intriguing dramatic angles. Good worldbuilding too.

I also liked the more human antagonists. Don't get me wrong, Tilda Swinton was deliciously evil hamming it up as the White Witch but for me there's something to Miraz having more reasons for what he does than just general evil lust for power. He has that too of course but (especially in the film) he clearly also cares about the continuity of the Telmarine kingdom. Otherwise he'd just kill Caspian when he killed his dad.

Generally, foreign actors tend to voice themselves for their country's dub. Sergio Castellito and Pierfrancesco Favino voiced themselves for the italian dub. -Teo

Personally i don't like the idea of spanish actors for a different reason, as any serious historian could argue that it's a part of the spanish black legend, that is, a tendency in anglo saxon culture to portray spanish people negatively because of propaganda made during the reign of elizabeth i.

The last book is really horrible on all levels, killed my interest in the series and I was still christian at the time. The only other fiction I've read that approaches it for awfulness of theme is the ending to A Canticle for Leibowitz (another book pushing christianity).

Maybe, but I'd also love to have known then what I know now about life, people, and what is really important. I think a lot of the difficulty being a teen is having so little experience and context; that anything that happens is world shaking and the most important thing ever. If there's one thing I could tell young me, it's "relax. It's really not that important."

This part of the last story always made me so sad, and it definitely isn’t fair. For my own piece of mind, I pretend that she still has things to do in the word before joining her family in the afterlife, but that she always would.

The only reason we're lead to believe Susan is being excluded from "Narnia heaven" is that the other "friends of Narnia" say so...but they don't have the full information (that they're dead and she isn't because she wasn't in the railway accident) until the last page of the book. By preserving the mystery Lewis gave the impression that Susan is permanently lost, when internal logic would indicate otherwise.

@@FM-cp6kc Susan was introduced as having pretentious leanings, especially in Disney's adaptation. It coming back in full force strikes me as something of a Chekov's gun, to me. Either way, at least she gets to grow old with a family. It's kind of morbid, seeing people upset about Susan being spared from a terrible train accident. I like that she survived, personally, because it means that she can have descendents who may have interdimensional adventures of their own. There being many more worlds than the Narnia verse is canonical, after all.

Thing is, with how big he is Reepicheep really ought to be a rat. Rats are more intelligent, cleaner, and more affectionate than mice but Lewis probably didn't know that. I think we should have a story with heroic warrior ferrets, foxes, and rats killing and possibly eating overwhelmingly large numbers of weaker, less intelligent mouse thugs.

My favorite Narnia book, besides the obvious racial undertones. If people think Aladdin was bad, The Horse and His Boy would never succeed. Edit: Fortunately, it's really the only book in the series that you don't need to read to understand the whole plot.

Same with The Magician's Nephew. But The Horse and His Boy would never fly. Only certain flavors of racism are considered acceptable, after all.

On the other hand, things are pretty ugly when Jill fights (with the exception of that business at Experiment House) so the underlying point still stands - in the Last Battle, they're fighting a losing last stand.

Lucy fights the Calmorenes at the end of The Horse and His Boy and that was a great victory.

Yeah, there was absolutely nothing secret about Chronicles of Narnia being Christian fanfiction.

I mean...in just the first three books (not counting 'The Horse and His Boy') Aslan creates Narnia, picks two of every animal, a boy and a girl unwittingly unleash a great evil into Narnia, Aslan is killed and resurrected all to redeem someone's sin, and in general he performs at least one miracle per appearance throughout the series before the final book. I mean, nobody says they stayed pigs _forever,_ it could've just been for long enough to learn their lesson. In the Horse and His Boy, Aslan turns another brat (albeit an older one) into a donkey, and it was temporary.

@@elsie8757 True true! I do prefer to think the pig transformation was only temporary to teach them a lesson. I have to say, though, the guy in HAHB was a bit more than just a bratty schoolboy; he was a spoiled adult prince who straight up invaded a country because the woman he liked rejected him. So somehow Aslan turning him into a donkey feels more justified. (Also I might not be remembering right, but wasn't there a threat that he might turn back into a donkey if he didn't behave himself?)

​@@elsie8757 Then again, they don't say if he actually did turn them back. And Aslan has canonically turned a lot of people into animals against their will, and most of those never turned back.

But on the other hand, Rabadash had already been thoroughly defeated and humiliated by that point, and his dad stated outright that he was on his own when it came to invading Narnia, so no backup would be coming from him. So it's not like he was much of a threat anymore, and was basically reduced to throwing temper tantrums by the time the donkey transmogrification set in. In fact, when this plan was originally being pitched to the Tisroc, it was even agreed that if things went wrong they could blame his actions on "the impetuosity of youth". So if his excuse for invading Narnia and trying to kidnap one of its queens was essentially "boys will be boys", I suppose it's only fair that he be punished in the same manner that bratty schoolboys have been known to be at this point in the series. (Sure this book takes place before Prince Caspian chronologically, but it was written after it, so the Telmarine schoolboys being turned into pigs would've been a precedent).

@@Dachusblot more like if he left the city limits (which was within a certain radius from the statue) he would be turned back into a donkey, permanently (Pinocchio has no strings on that). So since he enjoyed being in battle, that prevented him from going to war with anyone.

I know! and as Puddleglum, too, who was always my fave character from that one. Also I swear, the girl who played Jill Pole in that looked SO much like me at that age, it weirded me out a bit. I even used to have a similar red dress... I would've especially loved to see "The Magician's Nephew", with all the awesome hopping between worlds stuff.

Besides making sense from a "Mediterranean pirates = ancestral Telmeranes" POV, I think the implications of Narnians being magically-bound to have human leaders is actually a good outcome of the casting/costuming decision. The unfairness of some of Narnia's "great laws" comes across more blatantly, which is something that I think was too subtle in the books - especially given that we're almost always seeing "rightful" leaders as POV characters.

The masks from the helmets look really dope, so its a pretty cool aesthetic for an evil army.

Also it's an American movie and Americans are more familiar with conquistadors than Normans.

Sergio Castellitto. Pretty big actor in some circles. He's Italian though.

@lucian of rain and rainbows I never thought "The Call" was about the "romance" between Susan and Caspian. I always thought it applied to the Pensive kids going back to Narnia/ Aslan. You'll go back, when they call you. No need to say goodbye.

I liked the romantic subplot too. It also shows what Lucy aspires being in the next instances.

Also, my memory of the Telmeranes is that their ancestors were Mediterranean pirates, and that island-crossing was in the Mediterranean. So Spain makes more sense than Denmark.

I like that. Good history lesson.

As a pretty vehement atheist, this speaks volumes to be about how sincere Lewis was in his beliefs. If it's the water you swim in, how do you know? He's also like, the last contemporary Christian who made sense, so believe me: the non-believers like Lewis VERY much.

@@El-Gato69 I mean, yeah. Aslan has none of the baggage of real Christianity, just the fun, cool stuff. He never tells you you're going to Hell, and that makes him remarkably pleasant.

Aslan is literally Jesus, and speaks with the wisdom and grace of Optimus Prime. How could he possibly be any _more_ qualified of a leader?

It got scrapped because at the time Disney was unsure of if it'd sell box office seats. I'm hoping we'll see new adaptions soon, or maybe a continuation because the main cast of the first three movies are too old now.

Have you seen the BBC adaptations? They were a staple of my childhood. They did 4 of the books as a TV series, including The Silver Chair. I haven't seen it in 20+ years, but I remember the series fondly, and it might tide you over until a higher budget adaptation comes along.

It's definitely not perfect, but I don't think of it as a bad adaption at all...the core themes and feel of the book are expressed really well.
