"Not seeing the world that way" As like, a half defense of Meyer here, I also grew up as a Mormon in Utah, ingrained in that specific culture and history, so I can say with certainty that statement is absolutely true: we aren't taught to see the world that way. It's absolutely horrible, inexcusable in the current era, and is something I had to consciously change within my worldview for several years. While the group of people five years younger than me are actively fighting against that notion, the people five years older still cling to the idea that everywhere is like Utah (which is a HORRIBLE thought). So like yes, Meyer has that worldview because of life circumstance, but also none of those things are good ideas to have.
@later_babes
@later_babes 3 года назад
i grew up protestant so please correct me if i’m wrong (bc tbh i’m not sure if meyer is a fundamentalist where this could potentially be seen as normal or even if her mormonism is to blame here), but could her incredibly narrow perspective on the world based on her upbringing also explain why all the cullen siblings are dating? i always saw it as a strange plot point, but after learning about and researching the flds and other small sects of religions, i figure nothing is impossible in the world of cult-y theism. i’m so sorry if this sounds ignorant, i’m just genuinely curious if it could have been a factor, if at all
@tinahawley320
@tinahawley320 3 года назад
@@later_babes Incest is indeed taboo in Mormonism, so I doubt her upbringing was a factor. I suspect a more likely reason is she wanted all the other Cullen siblings to be in relationships so that there was no chance of any of them competing for Bella's attention, and she didn't think through the implications, as she failed to do with many other aspects of the plot. She also might have thought that she made it clear enough that they were adoptive siblings, though personally I still find that squicky.
@keiribbit
@keiribbit 3 года назад
@@tinahawley320 from what I remember, there is a short passage in the first book where Jessica whispers to Bella that the Cullens/Hales (because Jasper and Rosalie are passing for twins under a different name, technically separate to the Cullens) are all dating each other, and they all live together. Bella's instinct reaction is that it's a small-town mentality to be scandalized by that, then immediately admits to herself that even at home that would've caused gossip. I think Meyer was trying to imply that because they were TECHNICALLY different pairs of siblings, it wasn't weird, and it was just them all living under the same roof that would be questionable. but.... you know.... still.
@tinahawley320

In regards to diversity, racist or not, ots Meyers book and it's totally up to her to have characters of different color or not. Shes not evil if she doesnt check off someone readers checklist. By having diversity, -jacobs tribe-she ended up being offensive to real life people so I think I would have opted for zero diversity when the author isnt capable of balancing it and being respectful. That's a better argument then "Meyers is against having diverse characters if that's not how she imagined them." Write your own book and do what you want. Its hers

Meyer did actually write some interesting characters she just lacks the skill to get it across or the wherewithal to know when to present certain things as negative. Take Edward. He's a telepath so he knows everything someone is thinking. He spent the first decade or whatever of his life drinking the blood of humans who were about to/ did commit terrible crimes, and justified his murder of those people as such. But in doing so, he would obviously have such a god complex, deciding who lived and died. He eventually stopped because he didn't want to kill anymore, but that's such an interesting idea l. Now in the books, he has, for years, been surrounded by teenage girls fawning all over him and teenage boys being jealous, so he hears all of that unfiltered adoration or hate knowing that he wouldn't be able to fit in with any of them anyway, so he gets a superiority complex and you see that with how he treats Bella- as a child because compared to him, every teenager he meets is. If he could read Bella's mind, I don't think he would have been half as interested in her, he would either have killed her or just left Forks because by knowing her thoughts she's just as vapid as the rest of them but extra tasty. Being a telepath, no one has secrets from him. He isn't allowed a boundary because he can hear everyone's unfiltered thoughts about him, so I'm sure he would eventually slip into not thinking boundaries were important at all. So now you've got a character with a god complex, a superiority complex, and a complete lack of understanding of boundaries because of it all. What a fascinating character this could have been if Meyer had gotten Bella to make Edward realise these things and be a better person because of it.

One of the BEST things Meyer added when writing midnight sun is that in the baseball scene when James, Laurent, and Victoria are chatting with the Cullens, jasper is subtly shielding Bella and Alice from them by controlling their moods and making them seem utterly, mind-numbingly boring so the nomads will glance at them and move on quickly. It only fails because of the gust of wind that blows Bella's scent towards James but wow I thought it was such a good detail for her to include Also I loved that Charlie's thoughts are hard to read too, like Edward can only see abstract feelings not specific thoughts Otherwise that book was painful to read and I'd love Dom to give it a crack 😈

I feel like he was made to be uninteresting. Partly to match with Bellas blandness, and partly because hes the archetype of "the Beast". You know, the cool asshole that has done horrible things becomes better after falling in love with some beautiful girl (nevermind that Edward dosent really change all that much though the story).So, because he has to fit the archetype he cant have a particular complex story like the others do.

I honestly don't believe Edward is uninteresting. I think his backstory as a mind reading vampire who went on a vigilante period is as interesting as anyone else. Really the difference is we got 4 books and 5 movies focused on him, to the point where he was ramemd down our throats. THat in contast to characters like Carlisle or Jasper getting 1 chapter exploring their history. If Twilight focused on Carlisle instead of Edward for 4 straight books, we'd probably see people argue Edward was more interesting and deserved more focus. I think the only character that is legitimately uninteresting is Bella... but that's sort of by design. Lead female protagonists in YA fiction are designed to be blank slates, so teenage girls can self insert themselves.

I dunno, dying in a pandemic and not getting the chance to join the army to fight in WW1 is pretty interesting. It also explains to some extent why he's stuck in a permanent state of sulk -- though he quite literally dodged a bullet (and mustard gas) by not joining in the fighting, there was still a sense of extreme patriotic duty for men to enlist and a social stigma against those who didn't. That, and it seems like he embodies the nihilism of the Lost Generation, although I doubt any of this was intentional

Is 14 agents rejecting the early draft for Twilight really that unusual for a first time writer? As I recall, Pierce Brown said he was rejected by over 120 agents before finally someone accepted Red Rising. Given that agents will typically only read the first 5 or 10 pages of a novel, I would imagine most authors have to deal with a lot of rejections before finally getting that all important first novel published.

The "it's for teenage girls" defence reminds me of when people defend media by saying "it's for kids": as though that wouldn't be subject to a HIGHER standard, not a lower one. The fact that it's targeting teenagers is exactly the reason we should be critical of its content, they may come away with some very bad ideas.

(I'm a lesbian for reference) I read these books religiously in high school, so much so I was writing fanfiction of it. During this time I got my first girlfriend. She reminded me so much of Edward at the time and I fell head of heels for her. Long story short, she became abusive. To the point the only real safe place I had was those books. They gave me hope that things would change. Edward got better. Eddie changed. She will too. She loves me just like he loves Bella. It'll get better. It didn't. It got worse. Now is any of that Meyers fault? No not really. But did her works have an affect on me and kind of push me to stay in a bad relationship? Yes it did. Unlike media for young adults and adults, media for teens need to practice a bit of mindfulness. And parents need to better monitor what their teens get into.

If Meyer just called them SOMETHING ELSE she could have kept them as they were and not pissed off at least 40% of the people who hated the story. Vampires come in lots of different flavors, but when they don't need to drink human blood, can move around in the daytime, are unharmed by sunlight and have goddam SUPERPOWERS, then they really aren't vampires anymore, are they? She coulda called them 'Cold Ones,' alluded that their myths were distorted over the ages to became what we know today as vampires and half of her detractors would have never existed...

@@Vainone009 True, and this idea sounds a lot more interesting than straight-up vampires. However, I disagree about the traits you think would discredit being a vampire. Dracula wasn't hurt by daylight and could walk around in it, and also had superpowers (scale vertical walls, super strength, mind control, etc.). Plus, a lot of more modern stories with "good" vampires in them have them drinking animal blood instead of human blood; it's like the de facto way to signal that the vampire is one of the good ones (if not the only good one). Sparkling in sunlight was a new take, but it fits for a romance story and isn't inherently bad; just different, which some people may like and others may not.

Look up the YT series The Twilight Effect. Alice aka Ashley Green is one of the hosts and they're doing a "watch through" of the entire movie series and breaking it into pieces. Ashley relays how she felt in this scene or in that scene. Like the blue dress Alice wears at Bella's 18th birthday party, Ashley has a very strong opinion about. HIGHLY recommend it. I do admit I fast forward through the sponsors though at times.

Having read the entire series as a teenager, my feelings about the series can be summed up in this; the only time I laughed in the entire series was when Bella freaked out about Jacob falling instantly in love with her infant daughter, and kicking his ass out the door. My feelings were further progressed into irritation and tiresome, when the movies came out and they were painfully tiresome. And the second book was basically a complete waste of time and could’ve been condensed into maybe 10 pages total
