Despite the challenges, she quickly rose to work as the second engineer for Van Halen and Elton John, as well as the head engineer for Prince during his most productive years for a total of five years. Peggy shares her memories from the early days of her career, as well as insights on what it was like working with Prince, who she considers both the greatest and most difficult artist to work with. Catch Part 2 of her interview on March 3rd.

I was in a Prince video, The Most Beautiful Girl in the World, and at the end of the shoot Prince gave me his cane saying, “it’s old anyway” which made me laugh like he couldn’t just give me a gift. It reminds me of what Peggy said about how Prince gifted her things.

Susan Rogers and Peggy McCleary really paved the way for women sound engineers and technicians in the music studio. They also showed women should be respected in the workplace. They are pioneers. These interviews have been amazing. Thankyou for all your hard work ladies and other technicians + engineers as well. That's why today we have all that awesome music. And thankyou to the artists as well. Su.xx😮 Peggy, Apollonia and Susan Rogers are amazing.👏

As a kid 10yrs old I remember sitting with my Prince albums and tapes reading everything on them. I imagined who these people were, Peggy Mac, Susan Rogers, Clare Fischer, David Z, Steve Fargnoli, and Alan Leeds etc. So many people who were actually there when Prince was making music. Its nice now to put faces to their names and listen to their real life experience. Big ups to Sunset Sound Studios and thanks a million times over for sharing your storys. I could listen to Prince stories all day. Would be interesting to know more about the gear that was used for recording and mixing. I love Prince's fast workflow, it's about a song, not that much about a snare sound, that way you always have the mojo of a song's birth on your tracks, instead of having to choose between 20 different takes or 50 different snare sounds or effects

@@fretbuzz59 correct... some ppl have a hard time imagining what being in a studio is like and how people working there 'look' at music. she mentions not listening to music for multiple years after her work in the studio and it's not because she "hates" music. she didn't have time or energy to pay attention to Van Halen like fans imagine they would if they were there. ------ i witnessed a couple of albums taking shape in studios (just happened to know people), and as Peggy said, it's the opposite of glamor.. it's like cutting the veggies for a salad but for 10hrs :).. at one point you don't even hear music anymore but sounds if that makes sense... add stress/pressure to that and it's miserable, not everyone can do that sort of work

Thanks Peggy for sharing your stories. Much appreciated. Your boys should be very proud of their mother. Jeremiah 29:11

Peggy.... waw. Such an honest and straight forward fantastic woman. I love her approach of it all. ''It was a job'' in the first place, but she just isn't the kind of person to idolise artists. Very smart. The others are honest and fantastic too. Dweezil Zappa seems only to care about Van Halen, couldn't care less it seems for other artists or other stories, didn't put much to the conversation either tbh. Still great. Love these talks. I listen to them over and over. Thak you all for these great stories!

I seriously cannot seek out enough of these types of sit downs with the "behind the scenes" people who worked with my favorite artists or just simply in the industry period. I could sit and listen to these sorts of anecdotes all day every day. Especially with the stories that have nothing to do with the actual work, those give such fun flavor to the whole thing lol you think these people (the engineers & the artists) are so different from you, theyre so amazing, so lucky, incredible, have had such a life different from you - but those funny little stories add such a lovely familiar humanity into all of it.

This is great stuff! I can listen to interviews like this for hours on end. On top of that I did not know that there was a Sunset Sound reverb plug in. As stated above, more Van Halen would have been the only request. Thank you guys.

I thoroughly enjoy listening to Peggy. Although her stories are certainly entertaining, there is appreciable value beyond entertainment that I recognize. I would love to see Peggy get a book deal or something similar so that both she and a greater audience can benefit from the sharing of her stories and experience.
