The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Britain's Prince Harry and his wife Meghan were welcomed to Rotorua in New Zealand on Wednesday (October 31) with a traditional Maori ceremony known as a powhiri.
The royal couple first toured St. Faith's Church before attending the welcome ceremony with hundreds of locals gathered outside the Maori meeting hall. While inside, Harry was gifted an axe carved by a local Maori artist and Meghan was gifted a floral bouquet.
The Duke and Duchess will attend a public walkabout later on Wednesday and visit a Kiwi hatchery.
Meghan Markle comforted a sobbing fan by doing something very sweet:

Being a British person who lived in New Zealand for almost 2 years with some NZ family it’s a great honour to have one performed for you; there are many who do not understand or appreciate the meaning and power the Haka has to people. It has such an electrifying and magnetic physical and spiritual presence to it when you witness it first hand. Just amazing

I am glad Prince and Harry and the Duchess are going to be immersed in the Commonwealth countries. These faraway places steeped in history and their own rich culture are amazing to behold. I cannot wait to see them on their next adventure! (After Spring 2019)!

For goodness sake why can I not find a video of the whole ceremony? I know that people who make these videos think we have the attention span of a dyslexic mosquito but please this is a really great cultural event and I for one would like to see the whole thing. Maybe even a Maori elder providing a narrative as to what the parts mean. For those of us who are not Kiwi this is really compelling and I'd like to know and see more. Please take the footage away from the bloody kid who's editing and upload the whole thing.

Its a Powhiri which is a welcome ceremony. The tangata whenua or people of the land place down a fern or plant native to the area. If the manuhiri or visitors come in peace they pick it up if not then it means war. Hope it helps ✌

This is a ancient traditional Māori welcoming called a powhiri where Māori would welcome and threaten them to scare the party getting welcomed in case they are not friendly, to see if they have come in peace or for war Māori lay a koha on the ground, if the other side picks it up they are in the peace realm of rongo but if they deny the koha, they come with deadly intentions and a war will pursue
